"If you're not sure about moving up to clip pedals these are a must. They give the same pedalling power as the normal clips, in other words they don't release when you don't want them to. The difference with these is that they will release on the occasions when your reactions are quicker than your brain. You don't have to think about moving your heal to release them, when you get those panic situations they just release you to let you get your foot down. They come as standard with some shimano single sided pedals (the chrome ones) so if you're thinking of trying clip pedals this is the best option."

SH51 Single Release - simple but effective
Pros: Durable, High Quality, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"I've been using SPDs for a year or so now, and for road/commuting use I think the system is brilliant. I quickly got the hang of clipping and unclipping, to the extent I even subconciously twist my ankle when I'm using flats. Some might prefer multi-release cleats, which I haven't tried, but I've not had any problems with these at all- I like the fact you have to be definite about unclipping, and the movement is instinctive enough. They are expensive for two small shaped bits of metal, but they're also durable- they got a little rusty in the recent icy snap but have pretty much come clean again. I'm not sure how long they're supposed to last but I can't see them wearing out any time soon!"

Quick release, no pain!
Pros: Great Value, High Quality, Rugged, Versatile
"Having suffered what I can only describe as a series of "SPD moments" (including one that resulted in a shattered helmet.) I was seriously considering removing the cleats and going back to flats. In a desperate last ditch throw of the dice I decided to give multi release cleats a try. Wow, all the advantages of SPD plus being able to escape when the wet leaves, ice or natural clumbsiness strike. OK, occasionally they release when you don't actually want them to but as far as I am concerned it is MUCH better then bouncing along a pavement still tied to a bike! I have confidence in my pedals again."

SH51 SPD single release cleats

Pros: Adjustable, Good Fit, Great Value
"These cleats came with my Shimano PD-M520 Pedals and are the first cleat/pedal combination I've ever used.
I have them attached to my Shimano M076 SPD shoes. Setting them up was a doddle - the back plate that goes inside the shoe is sturdy and the cleats are easy to position and tighten with the supplied fittings. They are adjustable and you can really fine tune your set-up until you're 100% comfortable.
I'm not sure how durable they are as after my first ride I noticed that the top edge of the cleat seemed to have chipped a bit, apart from that they seem to be fine. The more you use them with your pedals, the easier they get to use - I've especially noticed clipping in has become much smoother.
To clip in it's a matter of simply pushing your foot down onto the pedal until you hear the cleat click in, then rotating your ankle outwards to unclip. Simple!
Just make sure you tighten them a few times, especially after your first couple of rides. I'd recommend checking the tightness every so often anyway, just to be on the safe side."

Clip in, clip out
Pros: Adjustable, simple
"Coming from road bike SPD's (Delta and Shimano), there is a little too much play in these cleats for my liking - the ankle can move around quite a bit.
Can be easily adjusted while wearing the shoes to improve position."

Replacement Cleats
Pros: Durable
"Bought these as replacements for worn items on cycling shoes. Fairly standard items really so not much to say other that the others had lasted just over a year before they started to feel a tiny bit loose and so i decided to replace. I have ridden with them pretty much every day to work and on most longer weekend rides and found the overall shimano pedal / cleat set-up to be very secure."

Not much to say about these, really...
Pros: Durable, High Quality, Adjustable, Good Fit
Cons: bites your bum if a screw comes out...
"...I mean, they're cleats. And cleats are either the wrong ones or, like these, the right ones.
In my case it's slightly over the top because I just wanted a screw (stop sniggering at the back) as one had fallen out, but you can't buy the scvrews alone.
So I'd suggest you invest in some threadlock when you put them on your shoes. Because there is little more likely to cause amusement to other road users than the sight of a cyclist trying to unclip but failing because his foot isn't twisting the cleat..."

SPD cleats do the job
"I bought these cleats along with PD-M520 pedals and dhb T1 shoes to convert my mountain bike.
(I also use SPD SL road cleats, shoes and pedals on my road bike.)
It turned out I didn't need to buy these as the pedals came with cleats. Pity the description hadn't told me that! I now have a spare pair :-/
Anyway, the cleats fitted both the shoes and pedals without problems, and the pedals attached very easily to the cranks. So, very soon I was off..."

if you're new to cleats, get the SH56
Pros: Great Value, Rugged, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile
"When I decided to try clipless pedals, mine came with some SH52 cleats. After loosening the spring on the pedal, I still couldn't release as consistently as I'd like so I'd spend a lot of time not clipped in!
Then after losing a cleat (no idea how!), I bought the SH56 multi-release ones, and these are fantastic! My foot releases every time I want it to, before I've even thought about it. Very occasionally they'll disengage when I don't want them to, but I can fix that when I'm ready by tightening the spring on the pedal."
