Don't use Speedplay cleats without them
Pros: Lightweight, Rugged

"If you ride Speedplay pedals, these are a must. Without them, the cleats (which contain the locking mechanism and are much more expensive to replace than other road cleats) are not only susceptible to damage, but can be dangerous to walk with on some surfaces - staircases especially! I keep them with me, in the back pocket of a jersey, whenever I'm riding (except for racing).
They do add a couple of millimetres to the bottom of your shoe, but it's well worth it for the added grip and cleat protection."

Why wouldn't you?
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Rugged, multi-beneficial
"These little plastic chaps are a very good idea for a couple of reasons: (1) They stop you sliding and slipping around on your Speedplay cleats, which due to their light metal bottom plate, beome pretty slidey on certain surfaces, particularly when wet, and (2) They protect your expensive cleats from wear and damage when walking from your bike to the counter in the coffee shop, or the showers at work. For just a few quid, they do a good job.
Personally, it would be nice if they were included in the box, but life's like that these days."

"Unless you are a pro with a support car you will inevitably have to walk with your cycle shoes on and then you will get grit, mud, etc in your cleats and they don't seem to be designed to cope with that. I carry these in my back pocket and put them on whenever I step off the bike."

"when you buy the 2012 Sidi T3 carbon SP you want to make sure to protect it as good as possible. Thats were the Coffee Shop Cleat Covers come into play. And it is not just protection you actually also walk much better in the cycling shoe with the covers on.
BUT remember to take them off before going on the bike - made a rookie mistake my self and forgot all about the covers in a Duathlon :-)"

"The Speedplay cleats are quite robust but walking on grass or other outdoor surfaces can result in mud or small stone chips getting into the cleat springs. These covers do a good job at preventing this.
They will also help to protect wooden, stone, or painted floors against scratches or chips from the normally exposed cleats.
So there is no confusion, these covers aren't intended for walking great distances. They're only really suitable for light use such as getting ready for a race, or a brief stop on a training ride.
They seem expensive for what they are, but they do a good job and can be used with multiple shoes (so you only need one pair). They are light and can be carried in a shirt back pocket without difficulty."

Very basic, and a bit clunky

"I have mixed feelings about these cleat covers. While I'm very happy to have them to protect my speedplay cleats from gravel, mud and grass, I'm disappointed by the design, which feels unnecessarily clunky.
The first thing that stood out when I first saw the covers was how big they are. Though they are not unnecessarily thick, the handle for taking them off seemed awfully big, until I tried to use it, and found it difficult to hold on to.
My bigger complaint is that the overall shape of the covers are totally flat. I see this as a missed opportunity, since the cleats themselves are quite large and the wearer ends up walking with their toes in the air. I can't shake the feeling that the covers could have been designed to reduce that feeling.
The covers seem rugged, and I don't see them wearing out anytime soon. I suspect one of them will be lost before that happens.
Would I suggest getting these? Yes, but mostly because there don't seem to be any other options."
