"I was informed recently that the vast majority of the riders in the Tour used Speedplay pedals...I wasn't surprised - the ease of use alone makes them worth it, moreover I've suffered in the past from knee problems which I'm happy report are no more thanks to these babies! I'm now on my second pair.

"The cleats are good quality product. Material is durable, and it has a high end production finish. It is also adjustable for different riders needs, which is important in cycling cleats. Easy for installation, and the instructions are self explanatory and precise."

"I went from using a time cleat and peddle to the speedplay. Theses cleats have got to be some of the ehaviest on the market and they aint cheap. As a keen cyclist you look at every single component on the actual bike trying to save grammes everywhere. Then you attach these badboys and it feels like you have ankle weights on, also they are a nightmare to walk in. I would have been better buying an MTB shoe and a lighter cleat !!!!"

Speedplay X Pedal Cleats
Pros: Durable, Comfortable, High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, great float

"I have been using Speedplay X peddles for three years and I can’t fault them. I needed to replace the cleats due to scuffs and general wear but the spindles are still fine. When I first started using them I found it a bit hard to clip in and out but now it is automatic and without thinking. I love the floating action. Before I was using the more ridged SPD and Look type clips but had problems with my knees. With Speedplay X there is unlimited ‘float’ and they seem to glide round, are very comfortable and I have no knee trouble. The only down side it that the cleats on the shoes stand very ‘proud’ so coffee shop protectors are essential, but they can tend to fall off which is not great. Anyway all round an excellent product though you do pay for the quality."

"Had to buy these as my new bike came with Speedplay pedals. Am definitely a convert - they're excellent for riding. Lots of movement, easy to use, and I'm a huge fan of the fact that they distribute the pressure across the foot."

"An outstanding pedal system which instead of fixing your foot position allows free rotational movement. This free float will probably feel a bit odd the first time you use them, and certainly when you attack that first big hill you will wonder if it will accidentally unclip as you rise out of the saddle. You won't of course, but will instead go on to appreciate the the natural riding position your feet find when unconstrained by springs, which in my case is different for each foot.
They are not a fit and forget item and do need some looking after, but they will reward your efforts to the point you can barely remember life before them.
I would also suggest you purchase the coffee shop caps a matter of course and use them for even the shortest of walks."

"I have been using Speedplay for the past 10 years now, and have never regretted the choice.
They are a bit pricey to start with, but then the fun starts.
One a year the cleats wear out (despite using the rubber caps), so I fork out 30 pounds: tough. I am sure Look does not wear out that quick, but I feel constrained when using these Look pedals (granted that I have not tried for a good number of years!"

"The speedplay X pedals are exceptional, low clearence, durable and easy to maintain. These cleats have uprestricted float, which can take a little while to get used to, but once you do, you pedal in a natural unrestricted position. I would recommend also getting the coffee shop cleat covers, as if you walk in any dirt, it can get stuck in the cleats."

"Initially I purchased these X series cleats, but ended up going for the Zero's instead (for float reasons). Becasue of this, I cant really comment on the product itself but I can comment on the service provided by Wiggle...FANTASTIC!

No worries with Speedplay...

"If you suffer painfull knees or your standard pedals disengage unexpectedly when sprinting then go for a set of Speedplays. Having once tried them I will use nothing else. The cleat itself is simple to install and simple to adjust and is comprised of high quality components machined to close tolerances. Correct fit with the shoe is assured by the shims included in the packaging. The cleat combines form with function so effectively that it trancends mere mechanics and gracefully ascends to the world of art, earning the title "Cleat of the Gods".
The four phillips head screws securing the top plate could however be made from a more high tensile material as the heads are easily damaged by anything less than perfect screwdriver tecnique.
They may not be the cheapest system but they are the best."

"Hard to review Speedplay Cleats without talking about the pedals as well! Speedplay pedals are lighter and easier to use than all the shimano & Look offerings I have used over the years.
The cleats are easy to fit and adjust with a phillips. I always replace after a couple of years when they start looking a bit scratched and worn however saying that they have never let me down and could probably go on longer. I dont use coffee caps. I use them for no.1 bike as well as commuting when the left leg has to go down at the lights regularly. Getting them on again is a breeze with double sided entry. I have the coordination of a sloth and found looking down to try to engage single sided pedals in the middle of a busy London crossroads a bit exciting whereas these slip in place easily. The only 'engaging' problem I have ever found is if I have filled the cleats with mud or grit.
The instructions say lubricate with wax lubricant, I very rarely do and they still work fine.
The ONLY negative is £33 is rather a lot for what is a couple of bits of plastic and metal!"

"Highly innovative product that has been designed not just marketed. has taken the product of the main players and improved it to a whole new level. Fantasic for those with knee issues as the float is exceptionally smooth ie it is not how much float but how easy. Also no "squeeking " cleat issues ever again. Easy to get in and out but no possibility of this happening when not desired.
Only downside is prone to clogging up with mud and stones if you are not carful when walking around...I can live with that for other benefits
