Tacx Flow Computer Ergo Turbo Trainer

Consider the circumstances. Optimum physical conditions and good materials are extremely important. Talent cannot be denied. Inspiration and concentration lead to flow - the perception of everything being effortless, exceeding your own expectations. With the CycleForce Flow, Tacx announces the start of a new generation of ergotrainers. This trainer is the result of knowledge and inspiration, combined with innovation. Heart rate, power, speed and pedalling frequency are measured and visualised on the modern display on the Flow computer. These data provide an important instrument for targeting and improving physical fitness, efficiently - resulting in optimum performance. During development much attention focused on the information that appears on the display. The brake indicator, for example, shows brake performance in graphic form. A histogram shows the slope, enabling the cyclist to view the settings at a glance. Moreover, you can select the training information you want to display. Another point of interest is the simple operation. By setting the power or slope resistance, you can adjust your program while training, to suit your own needs. You can even calibrate the brake to ensure accurate power measurements at all times. Flow comes with a matching-colour Skyliner front wheel support, which corrects the position of the bike ensuring a natural cycling posture.

Great backup
"This product was delivered promptly despite the weather and christmas period. Set up took about half an hour including adding the bike. The instructions could have been a bit more helpful as I was guessing a few of the stages of assembly. Also the computer instructions are a bit vague.
Anyway the problem started when I began cycling. As I tried to increase resistance it worked in reverse. Because the instructions were so vague I did a bit of head scratching. Eventually I emailed Wiggle, who directed me to ring Fisher, the UK agent for TACX. The guy was extremely helpful on the phone and immediately recognised my problem as incorrectly installed magnets in the unit by the factory. I was given the option of returning the unit for a replacement or to be sent a new magnet arrangement on the motor. Since the turbo trainer is a present for my wife, who is desperate to do some cycling before we go to Tenerife in the new year, I opted for the magnet option. It arrived in the post within a couple of days and was easily fitted. Problem solved and we are now up and cycling despite the minus 12 outside.
As a further measure the guy at Fisher contacted me a couple of days later to check since they had received the call from Wiggle after my original email.
Overall I am pleased as good service is only tested when you have a problem to solve. I would have no hesitation in dealing with Wiggle again.

Winter essential
"Obviously I'd rather be out on the trusty treader, grinding up and down the hills of the South Downs, but at this time of year it isn't always the practical option. A turbo trainer allows you to ride your bike without having to venture out into the cold, wet, dark, icy climes we suffer in winter.
Interval training is so much easier on a trainer as there is no traffic to contend with. Just get your head down and pedal (oh, and sweat a bit).
This particular trainer is geared up for the more serious cyclist who wants to build on base fitness. It shows power, HR, speed, distance, time as well as averages and maximums. The ability to do workouts guided by your power output is excellent and, although many contributions on various forums comment on the inaccuracy of the figures, this is irrelevant as the unit remains consistent with itself and will therefore show improvements.
It isn't as difficult to assemble as many would have you believe, and mine was up and running in about 20 minutes.
Resistance feels good and is more than adequate for training purposes. The control unit is fairly intuitive and the display is large enough to see when your vision is blurred from performing high intensity intervals!!
The whole thing is very stable and I feel confident whilst using a carbon fibre bike with it. It's also fairly quiet and won't annoy the neighbours (or the good lady wife!)
All-in-all this is an excellent product which is helping to motivate me to increase my fitness. The only downside is the boredom whilst training (ipod helps) and the amount of sweat produced (yoga mat under bike, and towel draped over bars and top tube) although these are not comments on the product specifically.

Tacx Flow Turbo
Pros: Attractive, Durable, Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged
Cons: problem with cadence magnet
"I had read several reviews that said it was complicated to build from the falt pack delivery. However, I did not find this the case and it was built in 30 minutes. This is my first turbo that now allows me to get some training in during the week and also think twice about very wet and cold weekends. The frame is very sturdy and holds the bike well with no wobble and seems to cope well with the occasional standing up. I also purchased the sweat guard and the floor mat to deaden the noise of the turbo. However, it seems to be much quieter than I was expecting even when not on the mat. I have had one problem with the cadence magnet that clips onto the left crank. I took the bike off the turbo for a sunny day ride and when I put it back I realised that the cadence was not working because the magnet had fallen out of the cadence holder on the crank. This was quickly fixed with a small fridge magnet and a glue gun to hold it in the housing. So watch out and remove the cadence sensor if you go out for a "real" road."

Great riding at home
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Durable, Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged, Versatile, you need one in winter!, simple to build and use
"I bought this for her birthday (at her request after seeing a Cycling Plus review) and she wasn't disappointed. Despite what the review said it was easy to assemble (just look at the diagrams and forget the text!) and it was up and running in no time. The Tacx quick-release skewer for the back wheel was very easy to change (just unscrew the old one and pop in the new one).
She has put it on an old yoga mat on bare floorboards so it does rumble a bit (not nice at 6:30am) but with a thicker mat it will be fine. The computer is easy to read and use (after she deigned to read the instructions) and has some clever functions. The constant power output setting is a good one. There are loads of schedules and tests on the web. Now that the evenings and mornings are dark and wet she wouldn't be going out so much, so this has really helped keep her fitness up.
I bought a separate Tacx skewer for my bike too, so its easy to swap hers out and put mine in (when I am allowed, that is).
Do we wish we had bought a fancier, virtual reality one? Not really. This does all you could want and with a heart rate monitor (maybe Santa will help) it has everything a 'serious' cyclist could want. You may want to invest in some more music with a pounding beat for your mp3 player though..."

Pleased with the Trainer
Pros: Durable, Rugged, High Quality, Adjustable, accurate power readings, accurate pulse readings
Cons: Expensive
"I have been using the Trainer now for about 4 weeks. I have no hesitation recommending this to other sports cycling enthusiasts. It sturdy, it's easy to use, it gives very accurate power readings and with the addition of a t34 heart rate strap, it gives accurate heart rate figures.
As many reviewers have stated, the instructions are not the clearest but once you assemble the bits it becomes much more intuitive than it first looks. It took me about 25 minutes to complete the build and (like most men) I never looked at the instructions for more than a couple of minutes.
My blood pressure has dropped noticeably and my resting heart rate has fallen by 10 bpm so It certainly has assisted my fitness. This is the third trainer I have owned in the last 15 years and is definitely the best. The clear display helps alleviate the boredom associated with turbo trainers, and with the assistance of some music it's the first time I have been able to spend 90 minutes per session training.
The power readings proved so usefull, it has even prompted me to add a power meter to the road bike."

A great purchase - but get a trainer tyre!
Pros: High Quality, Rugged
"I would recommend buying a trainer tyre to go with the turbo trainer!
I assembled the Tacx reasonably quickly but discovered that my current (slightly worn) back tyre slips on the roller.
I'm currently waiting for the training tyre to arrive before getting real use from the trainer! WIll let you know how I get on...."

Excellent training buddy
Pros: Great Value, Comfortable
Cons: Bulky
"A turbo trainer is never going to be your best friend but having a power meter built in has already started to show improvements in my normally cycling.
Forcing you to hold a consistent power as well as intervals of power is way more accurate than just working from HR.
It also allows you to show improvements, as you show signs of holding your Power at a lower HR.
The machine is easy to setup, relatively and easy to clip and release the bike each time. The only issues I am finding are with the computer itself.
I would highly recommend a power meter on your bike for turbo training if nothing else its something else to keep you occupied. This is a very cheap option and I would highly recommend it"

Great turbo trainer
Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged, Adjustable, Versatile, constant power & gradient settings
"I really like the Tacx Flow. Set up is relatively easy, but don't rely on the manual, which is very poorly translated. The unit has a "gradient" or "Constant Power" setting, which I find useful for doing HR/Power Curve tests. There also isn't any guidance as to the ideal calibration setting in the manual, but I did find something in the Tacx FAQ on their website that said it should be between 10-15, which is set by adjusting the force of the roller into the tyre. Warm up the unit first for a few minutes, and then perform a calibration. After I've done this, the power output levels feel very similar to a Wattbike, although admittedly I haven't tried it with a power meter. If you don't calibrate the unit, the power reading on the display will be wrong. The display is easy to use once you figure out which buttons to press, and there are a lot of routines available on the Tacx website. I program these into my Garmin, which makes it easier to follow them. I'm very pleased with mine, and would definitely recommend it to a friend."

Very happy
Pros: easy to use
"This trainer gives you all of the data you need, watts, cadence, heart rate (with polar heart rate sensor), speed, time, etc. It is very sipmle to use and you can download training programs for different types of cycling. It is a must to have the training tyre as it cuts down the noise a lot."

Great Power Training
Pros: Adjustable, Lightweight
Cons: Not Enough Features
"I can now power train, without applying the bike's breaks. Only think I would like is a quick release from power effort set, to free spin, for quick recovery, on/off sessions. Instructions for assembly were not the best, but I managed, as a non mechanical older female so I guess anyone can!"

Strudy with the benefit of training with power
Pros: High Quality
Cons: heavy
"I think like everyone else I found the assembly instructions a little confusing and unclear but I got there in the end. just set asside 30 min and take a chill pill it took me 30 min or less maybe.
The Trainer feels secure and sturdy and holds the bike very well.
The best thing is having power data in training I have found that most valuable as I do not have a power meter on my bike. I think for anyone half serious abouit indoor training this is a fantastic tool and insures you do not drop off the effort unknowingly.
The trainer is quiet and very smouth.
Tips:
If you already have a cadence meter on you crank the magnet works fine with the sensor on this trainer and no need to bother installing it.
buy a mat the cyclop is cheeper and works the same and definatly use a towel or a cover over the bike."

Great product
Pros: Durable, Attractive, High Quality, Good Fit
"Bought it to ride indoors on weekdays therefore needed something that is robust and can withstand constant usage. Setting up is a breeze and calibration is easy. Only problem is the wires need to be cable tied to the bike frame to avoid sweat dripping on them and also getting tangled on the pedals. Bike is secured very sturdy. Information on the computer is adequate for serious training.
Helped me win my first few races.

Great Training Tool
Pros: Great Value, High Quality, great training tool
Cons: poor assembly instructions
"The assembly instructions were not the easiest to follow and it would help if they were clearer in relation to brake assembly and connection of the wires into the 'head unit' and the wire from the cadence sensor to the brake unit. All that said I have found the Flow a fantastic training tool. It is so easy to use and it allows me to carry out specific training that has resulted in significant personal performance improvement. There does appear to be erratic heart rate readings and perhaps this is down to my current chest strap and not the Flow.
Great value for money, great training tool and so glad I bought one. I wish I had bought a Tacx Flow a long time ago!"

Fantastic turbo trainer
Pros: Comfortable, High Quality, Lightweight, easy set up, quiet
Cons: no preset programmes, fiddly cadence sensor fitting
"This is an excellent turbo trainer. It is easy to set up, your bike fits perfectly on to the fly wheel and it is quiet.
I've set this up in our cellar gym and happily train for a couple of hours whilst watching a movie or sport. The lack of noise (in comparison to other trainers I have used) means that you don't go stir crazy in a small room and the adjustable resistance levels means that you can get a seriously good workout including hill climbs.
My only complaint is that there are no preset programmes on the screen. At this price I would have expected this facility, even if they weren't extensive.
Otherwise it's brilliant and definitely helped keep me going through the winter."

Indoor Training
Pros: Adjustable, Good Fit
"I must admit I am new to training indoors, but after a great deal of investigation I selected the Tacx Flow, To date I have ridden about 500KM in 3 weeks and have already seen improvement. This seems to be well built and would highly recommend to others, They say it is hard to set up and I suppose if you can't follow instructions you could be introuble, myself from an engineering background had this unpacked and ready to use in under half an hour.
It is quiet, but can see waer on my rear tyre from this and will have to set up my spare back wheel with a trainer tyre and cassette and then I will be pushing this hard over the dark mornings/ nights of winter."
