"Normally I use clincher tyres but I have just bought a carbon wheel to go with my disc for a time trial bike. The first time i used this tape I messed up a bit by not centering the tyre correctly and creasing the tape a lot and wasted half a roll.

A tip for you all which I came up with.
run the tape around the rim and without removing the waxed side install the tyre and inflate to normal pressure, this will press the tape into the rim. I left mine a day for the tape to stick securely but a few hours may be enough. Then let down the tyre and without removing it gently lift it clear of the rim and gently start peeling the wax paper from the tape working around the rim without completely removing the tyre. Doing it this way I found that you can adjust the tyre without the tape coming back of the rim

Pros: no mess and easy to use.
Cons: backing tape rips to often.

"I've recently just purchased my first tubular wheels, and after doing a bit of research I decided that tape was the way to go as opposed to the messy and time consuming glue option. The tape was quick and easy to apply to the rim. The only criticism I have of this tape is that the backing paper didn't peel off cleanly in one go. It kept ripping which was slighty annoying. So far after 100 miles of riding it seems to be working well, the tyre is stil firmly attached to the rim. I have only given this product 3 stars because I have nothing to compare it to as this was my first time installing tubular tyres, but my experiance has not made my want to try glue next time."

Cons: Unadjustable

"This tape is extremely finicky to apply. If you are anything less than a bike mechanic professional I'd suggest something more idiot-proof, such as the TUFO tape, which has the plastic seal that you simply pull off after fitting the tyre. The seal on this tape is paper so you try and pull it with the tyre already mounted and it just tears off."

Pros: easy to use, clean
Cons: Wears Out Easily, unsafe, dangerous

"All I can say is that I will never use this again. The reason is that on a 40mph decent I ended up riding on my carbon rim and not the tire...

With heat from the sun and braking the glue became tacky. That with a flat was enough to loosen the bond and a few days later i rolled a tire. It was a very painful lesson.

It is very easy to install on the rims and a very clean solution, but this ease I think is the issue with saftey.

From now on I will be using proper cement! not worth the risk..

Hope this helps...

Date: November 2, 2009 Not as good as glue
Pros: Great Value, Lightweight
Cons: difficult to fit

"I bought this hoping it would be more convenient to fix my tubular tyres than glue would have been. Unfortunately it actually turns out to be more difficult to use than glue. Whilst glue is something of a pain, needing priming etc, it is more adjustable than the tape. This means that it is much easier to correctly fit they tyre. The main problem with this tape is that it is instantly sticky, therfore you have to get the tyre lined up perfectly first time. This is not always easy or possible and, as opposed to glue, you are unable to slide the tyre into position. This makes it difficult and fiddly to use."

Cons: safety

"I decided to try this product on the back of the many favourable reviews on Wiggle and the perceived simplicity of using tape compared to glue. I have never used glue or tape before.

My first thoughts were that the tape appeared to be too wide for my rims (Easton EC90s) and I had to be careful to get the tape dead centre to avoid exposing the tape over the rim edge. That said, there was a sufficient amount of tape to comfortable cover two wheels.

Given that the plastic covering the tape seemed remarkably fragile and easy to tear, I decided to remove the plastic after attaching the tape, then fitting the tubular onto the rim. As it turned out, I had to make quite a few adjustments to the tubular to centre it properly while on the rim and this resulted it white patches/marks on my new tubs -not happy! I then pumped up the tires to about 130psi and let the tape glue set for a couple of days. The alternative of fitting the tubular over the tape then removing the plastic seemed a little too tricky for a first timer!

The drama got worse after I took the rear wheel to my LBS following problems with my rear cassette: the mechanic suggested that my tubulars were not safe as rim tape did not offer sufficient adhesion. He even indicated that should a tire come off during a race then that person would normally be banned!

Before deciding to get my tubulars glued instead and have the Velox Tape removed, I decided to contact a number of other LBS in my area (Brisbane). One hadn't heard of using tape, another thought I was moroon and the others agreed that there were dangers associated with tape and always recommended glue.

For these reasons I cannot recommend this product and based on the feedback from suitable qualified professionals, am quite surprised that it continues to be used.

Pros: Good Fit, Rugged, easy to use, quick
Cons: peel off tape could be stronger, pricey if you get lots of flat tyres

"Have used this tape a number of times now and it is easy to install and holds my tyres on with no problems. One roll does 2 wheels. My only whinge would be that the peel off tape tears easily if you are removing it from underneath a deflated tyre that is fitted over the rim, now I just remove all the peel off tape and then stretch the tyre over the rim carefully making sure it's centred as I go. Loads easier than glue."

Pros: Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality

"New to the world of tubs so went for the tape on recommendation and NOT the messy glue ! Well how easy is this stuff to use ? I`ll tell you,DEAD easy even if you are a novice like me.Went onto the carbon`s a treat, exactly the right width and enough with a little spare for two wheels.Best tip i got was to peel off the backing and with your finger or a narrow clean paint brush brush on some luke warm water and washing up liquid and when you fit the tub you will find it can be centered really easily.Make sure you leave the wheel overnight so the solution evaporates. It might only be a small item but it really is very good."

Cons: Poor Fit

"With other tapes, the adhesive on one side of the tape is masked with a layer is of sturdy plastic. The tyre can be placed around the rim and partially inflated to seat it accurately, then the masking layer is pulled from between the tyre and rim, all the way around. On this tape, the masking layer is made of paper and tears snaps when being removed. This means the tyre has to be lifted off the rim, the paper picked off and then the tyre seated directly onto the adhesive surface. The result is that it's impossible to seat the tyre true on the rim. Buy Tufo instead."

"Seems as good as any other rim tape I've used and the price is excellent. I have fiddling with glue so always use tub tape. I never wait 24hrs after applying to the rim before adding the tyre - I always pop the rim tape on, seat it really well (i.e. push down with my fingers all the way round) peel a bit back either side of the valve then put the tyre on and peel off the tape backing under the tyre all the way round. After 15 minutes its ready to ride. Simples. If I had one criticism it would be that the tape is slightly wider than others so you have to be very accurate seating it on the rim to ensure it doesn't show over the brake track."

"Can be a bit of a fiddle to fit. You are supposed to fit the tape to the rim, fit the tub and then pull the backing tape from under the tub - inevitably the tape tears. I usually end up removing the backing tape before fitting the tub and doing my best to get the tub centred first time!
Despite this, it is easier and more convenient than glue and doesn't mess up your rim. Also it sticks to the tub when you remove it, so the tub becomes a ready taped spare.

"After trying tub tape I wouldn't consider using regular glue again. This was so simple. First apply the tape to the wheel, wait 24 hours then put the tub on. No mess and it was easy to adjust the tub to ensure it was on properly. Then another 24 hours and the tub was on securely with no glue on the side of the rim, my hands, hair, the carpet, walls or the dog.

Did I mention it was easy to use.

"First of all I have to say that I'm totally novice when it comes glueing tubulars. That was a reason why I was ready to test something different.
I was bit afreid of glueing with regural glue since it was 20-phase work and seemed bit complicated. With Jantex tape it was so easy that you couldn't believe.
I taped the rims (FFWD F4r) and let the glue stick for 24 hours. After that I put tire to a rim. There was a only problem. Glue sticks really fast so you have to be careful that you'll get your tire straight to rim. After tire glueing I let it dry for another 24 hours and that's it.
After those few phases I've enjoyed trouble free riding for some days already and tires sticked to the rim really good.
Now after finding Jantex I don't think I have no going back to clinchers.
If someone is having problems with glueing tubulars or is novice like me then I would recommend to give Jantex a try. It makes your life so easy.
