Musthave for commuter in polluted city
"I've worn it almost every weekday since my first city ride in summer 2007. Ten coal filters are black outside after more than 15000 km . What can I say? I'm glad that soot isn't inside my lungs."

"I was fed up of sitting at work still being able to taste the exhause fumes from the cycle in. Not anymore .
The only problem I have is that the mask tends to constrict my nose - mind you it is a bit on the large size, my nose that is, so I suppose it is only to be expected.
It goes without saying that breathing is a little harder but with use gets easier. It is warm but not uncomfortable considering the afternoon temperatures in the mid 30s in Perth
The funny looks for passing motorist are worth it."

Uncomfortable and moist
Cons: Expensive, Low Quality, Poor Fit
"Not impressed with this mask. No matter how it is adjusted it tends to slip down my face. Unless the nose clip is completely loose it also tends to cut off airflow through my nose. Finally I have also found in a short 7 mile cycle to work it gets very moist making it extremely unpleasant to wear.
On the plus side it does work well as a filtration device and now I've stopped wearing it I do notice the London smog more.
Overall definitely not recommended - I would encourage anyone to try one of these on and give it a go before buying."

Works okay
Cons: Poor Fit
"Really happy to finally have this. Will take a little getting used to. There is added resistance on inhaling; exhalation unimpeded. I find I need to breathe in through mouth during maximum exertion.
Th fit is my only real complaint. tends to slip down. Ideally the metal clasp should stay on bridge of nose, otherwise interfers with breathing. I think this would be better achieved if the strap went OVER the ears rather than under.
Large is only just large enough for my biggish face.

Pros: Comfortable, High Quality, Adjustable, Good Fit
"Took me a little while to get used to wearing it, but works very well. My glasses don't get steamed up and my breathing doesn't seem impaired. I look like a bank robber, but I can live with that"

Good commute mask
Pros: High Quality
Cons: Expensive
"Creates that suffocating feeling, but only for a minute or so. After a minute the body seems to realise it's getting enough oxygen and all is good.
Airflow is actually pretty good, especially at cruise speed. The temperature can build a little if you push hard and long, but it's not a major problem for a 30 minute commute.
The exhale valves work well. Only downside is the price.
Overall, much better than sucking in smut."

Better not sucking bus exhaust fumes!
Pros: Durable, Adjustable
"I have used these masks before - forgot that when you first purchase the mask it can be a bit stiff and digs into the bridge of your nose a bit.. That said, it's a lot better cycling with this mask than sucking in loads of fumes and muck from the road. I know none of these are fool proof and I'm sure I'm still breathing in loads of pollution, but it makes me feel better cycling with one of these - placebo effect? Possibly, but still happier about cycling in traffic with it on!"

Cons: Poor Quality, Expensive, Low Quality, Wears Out Easily, Poor Fit
"Wearing this mask and cycling with any degree of effort makes you feel like you have a live and aggressive octopus clamped to your face. I found the feeling of slow asphyxiation to be deeply unpleasant. The fit is terrible and no matter how hard you try to follow the manufacturer's instructions to clamp it over your nose, your glasses will steam up and the mask will slowly slide down your face. I now realise why hardly anyone else I see on my daily commute in central London wears one. I've also just returned it as one of the filters has fallen out and the lining is disintegrating after only a couple of weeks of use. It's a shame as there is clearly a need for a good mask for urban commutes, but this one is very expensive and (in my experience) unusable."

No good for me
"I found this mask to be too much of a hinderance to breathing for a 10km commute. Mostly I would be OK, but heading up hills at a decent pace I would not be able to get enough air."

Takes some getting used to
"I initially hated riding with this but it seems to be really beneficial. Persevere and you will enjoy the benefits. No irritating sniffles or coughs after being in heavy traffic. Nip the nosepiece up nice and snug to avoid glasses steaming up!"

Respro Techno mask
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Unadjustable, Unattractive, Poor Fit
"It is very good mask to wear but not for sport! Cos is hard to breath and i am sure most of you are asking this question! Is good for fitness not so hard training or just jogging or walking! The filter is perfect what can i say? It does its job like it suppose to do! Anthe bat thing is the fitting! I would like it to be more wider and cos it it very pointy is quite uncomfortable! For athletes i would recommend the sporty version of these cos it lets air get in faster and easier and let it out also! Put then again you need to compromise! )"

Respro Techno
Pros: Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Adjustable, Good Fit
Cons: Expensive
"A bit pricey for what it is but the Respro Techno is worth it when riding in dusty and exhaust filled streets. Also, I used mine abroad where its protection from inhaling knats and bugs makes its performance brilliant."

Does the job
Pros: Comfortable, Adjustable, Lightweight, Good Fit
"They've been around for a few years and I've owned one for the last 4 years and I think they work brilliantly.
Prior to using one I used to have a burining sensation after commuting to and from work in London (5 mile commute in SW London into West End). Since using oneI don't have that issue anymore.
And on a cold winters day its good to have a mask to put on and keep part of your face warm!
Elastic eventually goes on the mask (2-3 years use) and the filters need replacing every couple of months but I would recommend them if you are cycling in traffic on a regular basis."

Save your lungs!
Pros: Great Value, Versatile, you only get 1 pair of lungs
Cons: Unattractive, get the right size!, can get sweaty
"Having turned recently into an everyday London commuter, I became aware of how much of the 18 bus I was taking to work with me...notably exhaust fumes, particulates and diesel smoke.
I decided to invest in the respro techno not because I wanted to look like a part time shoplifter (one of the drawbacks) but to save my lungs. It takes a while to get used to and you breathe heavier but it proves itself instantly where you are not coughing up gunk the whole ride. It also sends out a message to other road users.
A worthwhile purchase.

anti pro
Pros: Durable, High Quality, Rugged, Adjustable, Lightweight, Good Fit
Cons: Expensive, Bulky
"i use this for both bicycle and scooter riding.
it's tricky to secure it comfortably under each helmet type, as it adds bulk to otherwise snug fitting helmet interiors.
it's certainly great quality.
there is a slight disadvantage in the ongoing filter replacement cost. that could be made cheaper with some buying in bulk options? still, it's like buying a helmet - how much should the premium be on one's health?
all up - glad i bought it and it really alleviates a lot of traffic fumes, especially on the scooter (where i ride on the road more that my pushy).
PS watch out for fastening it too tight - you end up with big circle marks on yer face - kinda like swimming goggles - lol.

No other choice
Pros: Durable, Comfortable, Adjustable, Lightweight, reduced odour
Cons: Expensive, Poor Fit
"It's hard to beat the Respro masks which is lucky as there doesn't seem to be any alternative.
My old Sportsa wore out after 2 years, which is pretty good for daily use. This one is made of stiffer tougher material which feels more robust and the filter doesn't press onto my mouth (good). It has no vents, which means I can't lose or snag them on the strap of my courier bag. It's reasonably comfortable, and quick and easy to adjust.
However it does tend to slip under my chin (I'd prefer it to sit between my lower lip and chin) and squash my nose slightly. Maybe I should've gone for Medium instead of Large.
Most significantly, this Techno model does not smell (yet)..."

Commuter Use
Pros: easy to fit and adjust
Cons: only suitable for easy pace commute
"This product is not really good for use when your working at above 80%. You simply can not get enough air into your lungs.
I would suggest that you should only purchase if you have a fairly easy pace commute through London as it does filter out the fumes etc well and would certainly be a benefit.
It's just not fit for my purpose unfortunately."

"This works well at keeping your nose warm and cleaning the air you breath without suffocating you. I originally bought the cheaper base model that doesn't have air outlet valves but it tends to suffocate you, so it is worth spending that bit more to get this model."
