value HRM - poor strap design
Pros: Attractive, Versatile, entry level hrm
Cons: disastrous chest strap
"For an entry level Heart Rate Monitor, this is a good value product, the screen is well laid out and gives all the data value combinations I wish to use (NB but not cadence). I have two reservations, one is that the units (including the transmitting sensors here as well as the computer itself) do tend to eat batteries - my first set lasted a mere 6 months of less than average usage. My biggest gripe is the chest strap arrangement used to hang the heart sensors from. The strap itself is fine, elasticated with a neat hook arrangement to fasten and a large variety of "girth" adjustment possible. BUT, the sensors themselves hook onto the elastic and just do not stay in position - I've lost count of the number of times I've had to stop to rummage with my chest at the side of the road to re-clip the darn things, much to the consternation of passers by, a number of whom I'm sure have thought I either am suffering a mild heart attack or else have a wasp down my front ! Not a great design and one asking for some ingenious fix to resolve it - I've tried using small elastic bands, but those get tangled with chest hair - ouch !"

Great value and quality
Pros: Great Value, High Quality, functional
"Typical Cateye quality. The unit was easy attach and it's simple to use. A couple of initial glitches with the heart rate monitor, but I can live with that.
This unit is functional and has great features for the price. Just a pity that there is no cadence function.
A wrist strap that the unit could be attached to, so that the HRM can be used whilst in the gym or whilst running, would be a worthwhile accessory."

Pros: Adjustable, Attractive
"This product looks awesome but let you down a little in the actual function. Everthing part has been excellent except for the heart monitor. I often have it dropping out of signal even though i do not change positon. Overall its other functions are great for any rider."

Very pleased but..
Pros: Great Value, Rugged
Cons: no stem mount
"Bought in 2007 to use with a new road bike. Went for wireless because previous computers sometimes struggled in the rain. Good price meant I got this one with heart rate monitor. I've not used the heart rate function very much but this year it wouldn't register at all, (just when I decided I should be more disciplined with how I cycle!). Tried a complete new set of batteries but didn't help (old ones were still good). Presently surprised to discover there's a 2 year manufacturer's warranty so its being looked at now..
Otherwise I have been very pleased with it. Backlight is a nice touch when you are looking for a turning in the dark and want to check how far you have to go, or just to check the time. Display is fine in streetlights. The lap function is neat way of checking my time up a regular hill ! When I did try changing the batteries it remembered the settings just as the manual says. No problems in the rain. Just occasionally get some unrealistic max speeds but I had that with wired units as well. Once the basic setup is done (easy) there's other stuff which will see you going back to the manual but it's all there.
One niggle is the lack of a stem mounting - my gear cables run along the handlebars so I can only mount two items, one immediately on either side of the stem so this is front light and computer. Nowhere for a second light or GPS - computer and mount has to come off when I want to follow a GPS route.
Overall I would rate higher if it wasn't for the present problem with the heart rate function."

Cateye Wireless Cycle Computer
Pros: Adjustable, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight
"Took me a little while to decipher the instruction manual but once set up this generally works very well and provides invaluable information for measuring performance at a good price. However, it is important to ensure the chest strap is tightly fitted and that the sensor pads are well dampened before setting off. I found it helpful also to use tape to hold the sensors securely on the strap."

Not the best Heart-rate monitor
Pros: Great Value
Cons: Low Quality, Poor Fit
"I like and still use the wireless odometer, but the distance capability of the wireless odometer prevents it being used from the rear wheel. The heart-rate monitor frequently stopped working and wasn't very comfortable. I have since moved onto another heartrate monitor."

A decent computer with occasional issues
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Versatile
Cons: occasional niggles with hr monitor
"The cycle computer was easy to set up and attach to my bike, so I was able to start using it almost immediately after receiving it. On purchsing new wheels with slightly different sizing, it was also simple to reset it to take the different wheel measurements. The basic features are also easy to understand, while there are plenty of extra features (most of which I don't understand yet since I'm usually happy with the basics). It is straightforward to read and adjust the display of the computer on the move.
The only issue I have had with the computer is that occasionally there are problems with the heart rate monitor. There have been times when an absurdly high heart rate is displayed (around 215 when I'm riding at a steady pace) and although this has only happened twice (one of these only for a very short period of time) the reason I went for this rather than a cheaper computer is because this is one of the cheapest with a heart rate monitor so it is a little disappointing. Normally, though, the heart rate monitor functions well and I have never had issues with the computer's other functions."

Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Comfortable, Great Value, High Quality
"This is a great little computer and a HRM to boot! What more do you want? Well, cadence would be nice too, but for fifty quid, it's a bargain."

Great value computer/HRM combo!
Pros: Adjustable, Great Value, High Quality
"I have owned 1 dedicated heart rate monitor before - bought for nearly £90, but gave up on it after a few months as it never gave a reliable reading, and I needed to stop riding every few miles to wet the sensor in order for it to pick up anything at all.
This unit from Cateye is a massive improvement, and at half the cost! I still need to moisten the sensors before riding, however this seems to be a once per ride operation. There were a couple of dodgy readings in my first ride (like registering 238bpm for a few seconds on a gentle climb :-O) hence the point lost on performance, but on the whole, it seems very reliable.
The display is clear, and after a few reads through the instruction book, I found the functions reasonably straight forward to find. As an owner of both mountain, and road bikes, the ability to store two different wheel circumferences is a great bonus too, making it far easier to switch between bikes.
In summary - no complaints at all. A great value piece of kit for a bargain price!"

poorly designed chest strap
Cons: Expensive, Low Quality, poor chest strap
"The chest strap has the sensors on clips that regularly come off and therefore can't give you constant HR signal. Annoying.
My old cheap £20 Oregon Scientific HR watch with strap works better, the sensors are built into the strap. I tried using this with the Cateye, but although it works with equipment in my gym (rower, runner, ski) it doesn't with the this, so I assume they have chip IDs. Shame, else I could just use that strap. Also unnecessary to have chips ID's given the wireless limited range.

Great Training Tool
Pros: Durable, High Quality, Lightweight
"This is a great piece of kit easy to set up on the bike and quick to programme the heart monitor gives you a good indication of your training thresholds and maintaining a steady fitness. I have cycled a few miles now and the time and distance are clear and easy to track. Would recommend the cateye to anyone. Very happy with it."

With a few minor modification it'd be perfect
Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight
"Well made, lots of functions, great value, reliable, easy to fit... The back light is useless unless you're on a pitch black back road, and it would be handy if they supplied a temporary mounting/wrist strap to make using the HRM when off the bike a bit easier."

Simple technology
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, good display
Cons: Poor Fit, heart rate sensors unweildy
"Set up: out of the box is tres simple....had bother with this before but no wires electronic interface to set wheel size made this a doddle.
Usage:Read the manual stupid..clear precise instructions with plenty of diagrams to help.
HRM: never used this function having been used to polar this strap and two fiddly sensors which clipon to the belt make things diffficult if I want bio feedback I use my Garmin FR.
Display: Neat precise and very readable.
Mount: Easy to fit and displays screen at a very good angle
