Surly Long Haul Trucker Frameset 2011

In an age of 'epic' this and 'extreme' that, when it seems everything is new and improved, bigger, better, & faster, it might seem antithetic for us to build-or for you to buy-a touring frame.

Good touring frame
Pros: Durable, Attractive, Comfortable, equips eyelets for rack and fender, long chain stay, triple bottle cage mounts
Cons: Limited Color Choices, short of stock
"It is one of the most valuable touring frame. I got a 56cm-26" black model.
If you choose this 26"-LHT, I recommend you to check frame size and fender width. Be sure that surly's frame size measurement is different from traditional style one. Surly's 56cm means that C(enter of BB)-T(op of TOP tube) is 56cm, and not C(enter of BB)-T(op of SEAT tube). So, my frame has almost 59cm length of traditional seat tube.
And also be sure 26"-LHT has 60mm length of inner fork crown and rear seat stay bridge. If you get SKS P-65 fenders(the width is 65mm), the rear is OK, but the front is 5mm wider than the clearance. I chose Planetbike Cascadia ATB fenders. It has just 60mm width. (Used for Schwalbe Marathon 26"x2.00".) But the Cascadia has big "planet bike" letters on rear fender, and you may not like it...
Anyway, enjoy your LHT!

Beaut Blue Bike
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Comfortable, High Quality, Good Fit
"I have just finished my Surly LHT project and every aspect of the construction went without a hitch. The frame is neatly finished. All the the bolt on bits fitted smoothly to the frame. I have taken it for three shakedown rides (105km the longest) and the fram is super comfortable and feels really strong. It exhibits a nice amount of flex and feels light yet really durable. I have two tours planned for 2012 (the longest will be 2000km) and I'm already confident that I made the correct frame choice."

Solid frame - don't forget cable stops!
Pros: Great Value, Attractive, High Quality
"I can't review this frame too accurately as I've only just finished building it into a bike. Frame was delivered well packaged, it's fairly light for a steel frame (not so light now the heavy duty wheels are on it...). The blue colour is lot better looking in the flesh than in the picture.
One thing you'll need to purchase if you plan to attach anything other than downtube levers is cable stops. The Shimano STI cable stops are a good bet. These attach to the downtube lever bosses to give you somewhere to route your cables to the shifters on the handlebars. Bike would've been finished a lot sooner if that info had been somewhere on the Surly website!"

Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Rugged, Adjustable, Versatile, Good Fit
Cons: Bulky, Limited Color Choices, no disc brakes
"I have wanted a proper touring bike for years but never had the money, so this Jan 2011 i decided to try a LHT 56cm frame set (I'm 5'11) as a cheap option. I broke up 2 of my old bikes for parts and spent another £100 on bits like headset, bottom bracket, cassette, chain, mudguards, a new rear free hub and a new front wheel. The result is for just over £400 i have a bike will do almost anything, its looks great and rides even better. My local bike shop was impressed with the quality, they fitted the headset, everything else i did at home which took me 2 days.
The LHT is quite heavy but it no worse then my Rockhopper Comp with disc brakes but the difference is you can load it up and rides really well where as my old bike used to flex badly with weight on the rear end. I use this bike all the time now as it has proper mudguards and its so comfortable. The only thing i could criticize is the lack of a disc brake option but Surley have only just brought out the Troll which is suppose to be a do it all bike. I will be interested to read reviews about that. Anyway i can make do with V brakes and i'm looking forward to doing some serious bike touring this year."

In for the Long Haul
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"I bought this for my wife for our upcoming touring trips. In my experience Australia has a poor range of touring bikes so i decided to build one from scratch. I love the frame and I am now coveting my wife's bike. She is 167cm tall and I got the 50cm frame which was a perfect fit. I love the steel frame (which is surprisingly light) because of the strength, ease of welding and there is less chance of stripping out threads. Has the v-brake option which I find more appropriate for touring. Nice Frame."

Solid Frame
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Rugged
"Can't complain about this frame. I built it up because I didn't quite like the components that come with the complete bike. It cost me a fair amount more to do it my way but I am very happy with the results. It rides very smooth and when I get passed by lighter bikes going up the hill I know I have a chance to catch them on the downslope."

Good frame, good price
Pros: Comfortable, High Quality, Versatile
"Bare in mind that these opinions are based only on having owned the frame for a few weeks, in which time I built it up into a full bike and given it a couple of test rides.
I bought the 60 cm 26" LHT in black. Overall, the quality of the frameset seems to be very high: welds are good, design is well thought out, paint is good and all components (mostly Shimano Deore and XT) went on easily. It was a bit harder than I expected to install my Cane Creek S3 headset: although both the head tube and steerer are reamed and faced at the factory, it was quite an effort to get the bearing cups and race seated - next time I'd probably trying heating/cooling the various bits before installing.
The end result is a fairly light bike (lighter than I had expected considering it's steel, and lighter than my old MB), which looks cool in a quirky, old-school way and rides well - it feels tight and nimble but somehow stable and relaxed. So far, it seems to provide just what I was looking for - a comfortable road ride with several different, up-right riding positions."

My Husbands Dream
Pros: Durable, Comfortable, High Quality
"This bike frame is part of my husbands birthday, tax return, everything for the next year present. He loves it, but says he should have ordered a size down from what he thought. He is 6' with long arms and ordered a 58 inch frame. He's riding with 700c tires and it still looks a little strange without bags."

Great trekking bike
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Good Fit
Cons: Limited Color Choices, uncomfortable installation of stand/side-kick
"The Long Haul Trucker frame is an excellent modern frame with classic look. I own a 62 cm 2009 frame which was used to build a trekking bike. Don't let the price fool you: it's relatively light in comparison to similar frames that use Aluminium or CrMo and has excellent handling characteristics on long journeys. Even fully loaded on high-speed descents it will give you a relaxed ride. This excellent value frame allows you to build a top-notch bike for a fraction of the cost of factory-build alternatives.
Some minor things to watch out for: you might want to see whether the bottom brackets needs to be tapped at your local bike store (should be alright though), adding a stand/side-kick is a bit tricky and room for a frame-lock would be a nice-to-have.
But those details will not spoil the fun. It's an excellent all-round frame for a very competitive price that allows you to build a relaxed touring machine."

Touring frame build
Pros: Attractive, Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged
"Very good quality bike frame for anybody thinking of touring or not in a hurry across town.
However after fitting the rear derailluer, the local bike shop discovered that the thread was not straight in the frame (used for mounting the rear derailluer), which created a slight angle on the derailuer. It adjusted ok but if it causes problems in the future may have to get a helicoil fitted to make the mounting thread straight.
Apart from the above the frame is of very good quality and strong.

"Review based on 54cm frame:
Very good value for money touring/expedition frame. All the braze-ons you would expect to be there apart from a dynamo bracket. Very stable with a full load, even at speed. Lots of tyre clearance even after you've put the mudguards on.
