Works well
Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality
"Square taper bottom brackets are now considered old fashioned - however if you already have square taper cranks, and don’t want the extra expense of replacing them as well, these Shimano bottom brackets are a good quality and reliable choice. It could also be argued that unlike the more modern external bearings these are better protected from mud and water by the simple fact of being inside the bike frame itself.
Some reviewers don’t like the separate collar being plastic – but for me they have worked with no problems - just don’t over tighten. Perhaps an advantage of plastic is that it can’t corrode and seize in the threads.
Changing a bottom bracket is relatively straightforward with only a couple of special tools: - a crank puller and a bottom bracket tool. Possibly the most vital bit of the whole process is getting the crank puller threaded up straight and all the way in. Remember cranks are usually alloy and the puller is steel. If it’s not threaded up properly the crank threads will be stripped out which is really bad news. Once the cranks are off the rest of the job is not too bad. Bear in mind the threads are left and right hand depending on which side.

first bottom bracket ever purchased
Pros: Good Fit, smooth
"The Shimano UN54 Tapered Bottom Bracket is the first bottom bracket that I have ever purchased. It was easily fitted. I have only done 50 miles on the bike since fitting it, however it it is much smoother than the 13 year old one that it replaced!"

Good solid performance
Pros: Great Value, High Quality
"My hybrid commuter had been 'graunching' for a little while, so I bought one of these to replace the existing BB (the ball bearings from the old one came out looking like red blood cells!). It was like riding a different bike. Very smooth, rock solid and still fine 1,000mi later."

Great quality, zero maintenance... so far
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Rugged, High Quality, Lightweight
"I have a high end steel tourer, to which this bottom bracket was fitted. It has worked a treat so far (5000 miles and counting). There has been no hint of loosening off, or play. All in all, for the quality this is very cheap and excellent value for money. Extremely highly recommended."

strong and light square taper BB
Pros: Durable, High Quality
"Fairly light weight due to being drilled through to reduce the axle weight, typical Shimano quality, should last a good few years without problems. Suitable for road and off road use.
Not the cheapest but would buy again."

Proven performance
Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged, Lightweight, Versatile, Good Fit
"I have used Shimano Cartridge Bottom Brackets for many years and they have always been utterly reliable. In addition to fitting one to my Commuter / Trekking bike I recently fitted one to a friends bike, he was impressed how smooth the bearings were. You can't go wrong with any Shimano product and this is no exception."

"There's fairly limited choice for square tapered BBs these days. For the money it's pretty good. Weighs a fair bit, but has been running smoothly for several years now, whilst external BBs on other bikes have come and gone..."

Schimano bottom bearing
Pros: Great Value, Good Fit
"Good product. Solid. I think some people would be a bit worried about the plastic securing nut on the left hand side, but I have had no trouble with it. Very much better quality then the origional. easy to fit. A pleasure to use. Probably not for the athlete, who might want light weight ceramic bearings, but good to very good for general use. At this price you could not go wrong."
