Surly Steamroller Single Speed Frameset 2011

Designed to give you the ideal foundation for a pure and unadulterated fixed gear bicycle... you may think 'messenger', 'track', urban assault or coffee shop... or whatever... but make it your thing. As we have said since we introduced the Steamroller frameset, we won't try to convince you that riding 'fixed' is better or special or why you should try it. You'll have to try that for yourself. But whether you're old school or new hat, you'd be hard pressed to find a better canvas to build your ideal street machine. It's made from Surley 4130 CroMoly steel because steel is durable and responsive, things we like and we're pretty sure you do too. Its geometry is tight compared to road frames and relaxed compared to twitchy track frames. It takes big tyres because big tyres make sense - Tyre casings flex before the frame. It's got almost no 'features', no pump peg, no housing stops, no cell phone or GPS mount. Just a set of water bottle braze-ons. Well, it does have a nice brazed crown fork we think looks pretty snazzy. If you're like us, you may consider less tangible elements (such as ride quality) to be features and it's got these in spades. This is a frame meant for riding. Everyday. It was designed by cyclists for cyclists. It's most at home on the street, but it's also track legal and does a pretty fair job on trails too. It's a fixed gear frame in the tradition of fixed gears, before there were freewheels or handbrakes (effective ones, anyway), harkening back to a time when big tyres weren't a design feature but a necessity, when a ride was an adventure. But hey, don't let us convince you. Try one out, it may just become your favourite bike

Quieter and less jarring than alloy

Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, Rugged, High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile, Good Fit
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"I was looking to build a quality single speed, that wasn't going to cost the earth.
I knew that I wanted a steel frame because steel offers a quieter and less jarring ride than alloy.( I wasn't fussed about lugs)
I considered about a dozen frames and brands before gradually trimming it down to just a couple.
Eventually I decided on the Surly Steamroller because unlike many ,it was not a nervous track frame and therefore would make a comfortable road bike.
Have a look at the Surly website for full stats on the frame.
Wiggle had it in stock and cheaper than I could get it anywhere else!
Well, the bike has been built ( mostly from wiggle quality stuff) and the result is better than I could have hoped for.-See Picture
I love it ! - It rides very comfortably ,quickly and quietly.
What more can you ask for !
So if your thinking about building yourself one - I reckon Just do it -

Pros: Durable, Attractive, Comfortable
"i think this is a great frame, good geometry, excelerates quickly and is comfortable on longer rides.an easy build, everything fitted without problem.i'm running it as a singlespeed with a back brake and fat tyres for dusty summer firetrails, and i'll probebly never take it near a piste, so pretty versatile i'd say.its strong good looking and as frames go not that expensive."

The four season fixed frameset
Pros: Attractive, Comfortable, Versatile
Cons: ugly decals
"I guess most most of the world doesn't receive enough yearly snowfall to appreciate a bike with some decent tyre clearance. Especially the fixie crowd seems to have a fetish for paper-thin clearances with skinny tyres. They may be fine on the track or on pristine, just-cleaned streets, but in the real world (at least as defined by the terrible public road upkeep at Helsinki) they suck. This thing is something else entirely: I use 35c studded tyres in the winter and I'm not even near the limit.
Built properly with good parts, the frame looks classy. The decals it came with are absolutely horrible, though, but they can be quite easily wiped out with a blowtorch and some patience. It isn't the lightest steel frameset around (my 53 was a bit over 2000g for the frame alone), but it seems to be nicely built, and from what I've heard, it can handle some real abuse.
For a mass-produced steel frame it may be just a bit expensive, but if you want a rugged fixie-specific frameset with ample tyre clearance and decent looks, you don't have that many options."

A practical frame for everyday use
Pros: Durable, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"Build quality and finish is good. The frame feels like it has been thoroughly designed: stiff yet comfortable, responsive handling and still stable. The tobtube is quite long (size 56) compared to seattube. This is something one should notice when thinking about fitting the bike.
A nice thing is that the frame will accept bigger tyres. You can also fit mudguards so the bike will nicely work as commuter in the winter.
Frame just works. It may not be exciting, but it is well designed, practical, strong and fun to ride."

Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, Rugged, High Quality, Good Fit
"what a frame.
i picked this up on a midweek discount with a great price.
i am very happy with it, i built it straight up and it rides great.
it is whippy, fast, dead fun and looks great.
not the lightest but you don't notice the weight and you know it's built well, albeit in taiwan.
worth a pop."

Surly Spectacular
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Comfortable, High Quality, Rugged, Good Fit
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"What a frameset! Surly can do no wrong! This steel frame is made to be ridden in the concrete jungle. To be woven in and out of cars, to glide among traffic, and to put a sublime smile on your face as you do so. Esssential it's Track for the Streets and it works.
Heavier "Yes".
Featureless "Yes".
Old School "Yes".
But are you a man or a mouse! Cause I'll take this steel hot rod over any fancy carbon boy road set any day."

Surly Steamroller frame
Pros: Attractive, Comfortable, Durable, Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged
"The Surly Steamroller is one of the best value for money fixed/single speed frame around.
I bought a 53cm frame from Wiggle and it was one of the best deal I had ever had !
The price was so cheap compared to other online sites any where in the world. And the delivery time was incredible, as the frame was sent on Monday and I had received it on Saturday morning.
