Not so good....
Pros: High Quality, Rugged, Versatile, looks nice
Cons: not very breathable, not for training in cold weather
"I was severely disappointed in this jacket - I had read some very good reviews on this site but i don't rate the performance and design of this jacket at all. I will say it is very well made and a comfortable jacket, but the fault is in the design: it has sleeves that are completely windstopper... windstopper is a membrane material that does what it says very effectively, unfortunately it is does not breathe particularly well. The result is very sweaty arms and shoulders when used for extended periods (like over an hour or so). 'So what' you might say... well the ramifications are, when used in a cold climate, is some pretty severe chilling. I have used similar jackets (which cost less, ironically) with the windstopper membrane in panels in front of the jacket and on the front aspect of the sleeves only (leaving a breathable textile under the armpits and posterior aspect of the sleeve). This stops the wind but leaves plenty of surface area for moisture to escape. Unfortunately the phantom has circumferential windstopper on the sleeves and on the sides of the garment. With the sleeves zipped off it's a different story and it's actually warmer for longer rides with the sleeves zipped off as your arms only get cold, not wet and cold.
I will add that I have tried this jacket with a short sleeved base layer, a long sleeved base layer and a base with vest... In long rides around freezing I recommend a thick baselayer with the windstopper sleeves zipped off. The windstopper sleeves are only useful when on a short commute or when descending without working hard or going on a low intensity ride to the shop. I will say in this jacket's defence that I do sweat considerably when exercising and I suffer the same problem with windstopper and goretex when hiking, x-country skiing etc.... So this review may pertain particularly to those who sweat a lot or like to train hard. This jacket may be ok in warmer weather... which is curious. One last gripe... the relective stripes on the arms face inwards...which is quite bizarre.
In summary: a good jacket for commuting short distances or for low intensity rides. A poor jacket for training or in cold weather. Buy a gilet instead, or better still a jacket that breathes."

Excellent Multi-purpose soft shell
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Comfortable, Durable, Good Fit, High Quality, Rugged
Cons: Expensive
"I've owned a number of soft-shell jackets and find claims from some manufacturers about their product being 'windproof' rather spurious.
As you'd expect from Gore this product does live up to its claims and in that regard it's worth paying a little extra for the quality. The fact that the arms can be removed make this a true all-season jacket and I've used it comfortably on both very cold and warm days.
It has a reasonable level of water resistance and will keep you dry in all but the most prolonged downpour.
Fit is very good, I'm around 6ft 3" and went for the XXL because I wanted a slightly looser fit and mainly use it for MTB. If however you're a road-biker stick to the Gore sizing guidlines for a good snug fit."

Simple Brilliant
Pros: Comfortable, Lightweight, Versatile
"I avoided Gore as i dont believe the claims of waterproof and breathable, i found they are one or the other. This jacket doesn't claim to be waterproof, but it does a good job of shrugging water off. In biblical downpours it will wet out, but in all other conditions it keeps me dry. When it did wet out, it was still warm, other windproofs appear to be thinner material and once wet allow a feel chilly next to the skin. The zip off arms adds another riding option, making it a very versatile jacket.. It may not be the lightest jacket, but its nigh on perfect for my riding."

Awesome cold weather jacket
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Comfortable, Good Fit, High Quality, Versatile
"What can I say about this jacket?
It is really, really warm, yet cool enough to wear on days where the weather surprises you by being warm.
More or less water proof in all but the worst downpours, removable sleeves increase the versatility.
Buy this jacket!"

Really well designed kit
Pros: Comfortable, Good Fit, High Quality, Rugged
"I bought this after reading a number of excellent reviews on the jacket, and all I can say is that they were all right. The biggest point for me is the removable sleeves, which make the jacket two garments in one and extend the usability window enormously. The other great feature is the back, which has thin material to help the fit and make sure that you don't get punished with sweaty back syndrome when you have your hydration pack on.
Overall this is a great jacket and highly recommended for anyone looking for a riding jacket for all but the most extreme conditions."

Best windproof jacket
Pros: Durable, Comfortable, High Quality, Rugged, Lightweight, Versatile, Good Fit, less need to keep adding or removing clothes
Cons: Expensive, fiddly sleeve zips, not as breathable as some
"This is my second one of these with the new one being noticably 'shinier' and more waterproof but perhaps a little less breathable? There is no other jacket I know of which will take you through such a temperature range. Especially suited to high mountain rides as the wind speeds and temperature range require maximum wind protection and breathability.
Downside is that the sleeve zips are fiddly. I normally do not re-attach the sleeves whilst out riding. If it gets too warm I may remove them but find putting them back on too much of a faff, preferring instead to wait until it's cold enough to need my E-Vent waterproof on top.
Choose whether it's a sleeve on or off day before going out, adding the sleeves only on cold or cool and wet days."

Must Have for Winter!
Pros: Durable, Comfortable, High Quality, Adjustable, Versatile
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"The best winter clothing buy I've made! This jacket keeps you warm with minimal under-garments. The other big plus for this jacket is that you can remove the sleeves or partially unzip them to control body temperature, handy here in Melbourne where you can get all the seasons in one ride!
The only negatives are the limited colours (could only get the grey) and the location of the reflective stripes on the inside of the sleeves. As luck would have it they came on special the week after mine was delivered, however, not complaining as you essentially get two garments for the price of one...remove the sleeves and you have a vest!

Gore-blimey
Pros: Durable, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Bulky
"Great jacket. wife bought form me thinking it was fully water proof. It's not. It has an open vented back. My backpack covers this anyway so its not really a problem and with the removable sleeves I have probably worn this 10 times more than I would the fully sealed water proof jacket!!
I love it and wear it almost every time I ride at the moment (winter). temps varying from 4C to 19C!

Cold weather top layer
Pros: Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, Good Fit
"Very comfortable, snug fit, very warm on cold morning commutes. It is even water resistant (light showers at least) as well as wind-blocking. On longer rides it becomes a bit too warm but for short rides and very cold mornings is is perfect."

Gore Bike Wear Phantom II
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Lightweight, Good Fit
"I bought this product after being recommended by a few friends. At first I was sceptical of the price but I really needed a jacket for the commute to work. The day after I received the jacket, it hammered it down with rain so I wore the jacket to really test its credentials. I arrived at work with a warm (but not over-heated) and dry core; and the sweat had been whipped away from my body. Instead of wringing out my clothes like I usually have to, I simply hung up the jacket and it was dry within about an hour and a half, making the ride home much more comfortable! I couldn’t recommend this jacket highly enough in terms of aesthetics and practicalities - it is well worth every penny!"

Pros: Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile, Good Fit, very weatherproof, good rear pockets
"Bought this jacket a few weeks prior to a trip from Mull of Galloway to John o Groats with my wife on our tandem. I should have had one years ago as it prooved to be a real life saver as we moved from red hot weather at the weekend to rain sleet and snow by the middle of the week. The jacket did what it said and more keeping out the cold and wet with a minimum of layers underneath. Also lovely to wear by itself after a shower around the campsite when the rest of the gear gets an airing. I would have no hesitatin in recommending this product."

Gore is great!
Pros: Durable, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, flexibility
Cons: Expensive
"I've not been disappointed with a Gore product yet. Yes, they may cost a little more, but rather have one quality item that works than several cheaper ones which don't quite hit the mark.
This jacket is a prime example. Very comfortable, breathes well - just the job for a cool morning and then as the day warms up, off come the arms!
Highly recommended.

Gore Phantom II Windstopper jacket
Pros: Attractive, Comfortable, Durable, Good Fit, High Quality, Versatile

Good for cold weather
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality
Cons: Bulky, breathability
"I'm pleased with my purchase. Great for cycling at 5C with just a thermal T-shirt underneath. I've also tried it a little warmer at 11C without the sleeves (with a very thin base layer).
If I have one criticism it's that I got quite sweaty inside so don't think it will be suitable for me in warmer weather but I've yet to try it sleeveless on it's own. Still think it was worth £85 in the sale for cool conditions when I might not have ventured out!
