Novel design improves beam shape and spread
Pros: Attractive, Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged, good beam shape projection and brightness
Cons: not possible to charge spare batteries
"The Cateye EL610 Single Shot Plus light employs a novel design where the two LED dies point backwards into a specially shaped reflector. Unlike forward facing dies, where a lot of light is lost to the edges of a rather wide beam, this design captures most of the light and projects it forwards. The beam is fairly narrow with a wide bright spot and good brightness in the annulus surrounding the spot.
The light is blindingly bright and more than adequate for cycling in dark parks and bushland on moonless nights. Its output compares favourably with other lights costing over $A300.
The casing is waterproof and well gasketed for rainy weather, and the one-button switch and mode control is easy to learn. You can have bright or dim output, with steady or flashing modes for each brightness.
(Light manufacturers must consider having a true dip rather than dim because these lights can blind approaching cyclists.)
The batteries must be in the light to charge them and, as this can take up to four hours, is a real drawback if you are making long evening and early morning trips. I would like to see a battery pack that can be charged outside of the light so that you could keep a standby pack on charge.
The battery pack consists of four AA batteries wired together and shrinkwrapped, with a special lead and plug to insert into the light head. It would be better to have a battery carrier into which batteries can be inserted, thus allowing them to be charged in any charger that takes pairs of NiMH batteries.
For Australians, the $126 price (inc. free freight) very favourably compares with c. $255 excluding freight charged by local on-line shops."

Superb Front Light
Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged, Versatile
"I needed a front light to show me the way home on unlit roads in the dark (we're pitch black on some lanes) without the 3-figure price tag.
The Cateye EL610 does a pretty good of this and wa able to light up the lane in front of me up to about 15-20 metres or so, with enough dispersel and power to not have to focus on a single spot, In fact, it lit up the white centre lines in the road, across to the kerb, then the pavement beyond. It gave me plenty of confidence to keep the speed up and know that I had enough time to spot and avoid the oncoming obstacles.
The light isn't as bright as other lights that it is competing with, but that's such a big deal when you consider that it costs a fraction of the price. When coupled with another LED light for being seen, the two worked togather very well for long and short distances.
Its a pretty heavy unit, but feels very tough. The switch is neatly covered and seems waterproof. Its not in the handiest of positions for switching modes.
Which neatly leads me on to the features, which are plentiful - although I found myself only using the high beam in the end when using it with another flashing light to attract attention of other road users.
To sum up - the light has 90% of the performance of its rivals, but at <50% of the cost, a very good light indeed."

Fantastic light
Pros: Adjustable, Durable, Good Fit, High Quality, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"This light is stupendous.
On road I have been using it on flashing mode. I have sensed that cars are seeing me earlier & are giving me more space. You can see the flashes lighting up signs & lamposts many yards down the road.
I have also used it on Birmingham's canal towpaths at night where it is bright enough to use alone (unlike the Cateye EL 510).
It feels very robust & I think it will withstand a few knocks.
I haven't had to recharge it yet, & I know that I would have had to recharge by now all the other front lights I have used in the past. This is mainly because the flashing mode uses much less power.
Last winter I used the EL 510. The 610 is in a different league. The price differential is partially offset by the 610 having its own rechargable battery, so you don't have to fork out for additional batteries. If you can find the cash I would very strongly recommend this light."

Superb Single Shot Plus
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Rugged
"Early days yet, but...light output is superb. Only used for commuting, but down unlit roads and rough paths; easily enough light to ride at full speed (if you know the route). Child-proof in its operation and the charge run-time is excellent (> 4hrs).
Considered other lights at x3 the price (as reviewed recently in cycling mags!) but at £80 i cannot fault the Single Shot Plus. If youre not doing off road overnight racing, then go for this one.
I did buy the additional clamp from Wiggle as well, based on reviews of the poor quality of the clamp that came with the light; however on inspection both clamps appear to be exactly the same. Id recommend just buying the light and see how you go with the enclosed clamp."

Cateye EL610 single shot plus review
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Durable, Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged, Versatile
"Fantastic light. If you are looking for a light that will light up your way in the darkest of conditions, then this is the light your after. I ride many dark roads, and have about as much vision as a car at night due to this light. The light itself is very very sturdy and amazingly bright. Battery life is as stated in specs. I bought this light with a little doubt about its mounting bracket, due to other reviews. So i bought another bracket from wiggle, when i purchased the light, just to be safe. Do exactly that, the latest bracket is slightly different to the one that comes with the light, and its these slight differences that change it completely. Basically they add more rubber, and make it sturdier. Haven't had any slippage on my handle bars at all. I ride on roads, but at speed and on 100psi tires, so small bumps become larger bumps. But still i have had no movement from the light. I recommend majorly!
Great priced light, for what it does! Hate to be the cars that have to see it coming at them, BLINDING!"

An excellent Compromise
Pros: Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile
"An excellent Compromise between battery light and rechargable front light systems.
Excellent beam quality offers visibility plus being able to see where you are going for a reasonable price.
Only let down buy poor rubber charging plug (falls off) and attachment bracket which could be stronger !"

Good light for commuting
Pros: Durable, High Quality
"The light is quite heavy so make shure that it clicks into the mount, I did´nt so it went into the pavement in 30 km/h... Fourtunetly it didnt break... Much larger and hevier than the HL-EL610 but the light is much stronger. I would recommend this light to all commuters out there, just be shure that it is tightened properly, would not use the light when going on really bumpy tracks."

Let there be light!
Pros: Durable, High Quality, Rugged, Versatile
"This is just the job for commuting through the long dark days of winter. The amount of light thrown out on full beam is more than enough to see your way safely along unlit country roads, and in town the flashing mode will alert even the doziest road user to your presence. I used it all through the winter and it coped with temperatures down to -7C and wasn't affected by some serious rain storms. Well worth the price."

What I need for the unlit country lanes
Pros: Great Value, High Quality
"I wanted a light which would get me noticed when riding home in the half-light, and which would light up the unlit country roads.
This does both - the flashing mode is certainly noticeable in the dusk of my usual commute, and the full beam throws a useful beam of light ahead to show the road surface, and picks out the road signs a few hundred metres ahead. I tried the flashing mode in the pitch dark one night - not recommended, the flashing catseyes really did my head in!
The unit is small and not too heavy, and the mounting seems to be plenty secure enough that I don't worry when going over potholes and rough patches.
Maybe the light isn't quite big and bright enough for serious off-road riding in the dark, but it completely meets my needs for riding at night on the road."

Superb light output
Pros: High Quality, Adjustable
Cons: Bulky
"I cycle on tarmac, along unlit and somewhat uneven roads so seeing and being seen are important to me.
Once you get the angle adjusted correctly, this light is superb. I initially I fitted it to a bracket already in place for an older (now defunct) Cateye light and was disappointed - until I fitted the new bracket and adjusted the angle correctly. It would make more sense to me if the unit itself was fitted horizontally and it directed its light at the correct angle, rather than have the whole unit pointing downward.
The unit provides good illumination for a good 15m or more in front of you. I run it alongside a HL-EL530 which has a very directional beam and is great (only) for lighting beyond that. Between them they really light your way, but if I could have only one lamp it would be the HL-EL610.
The supplied bracket has no problems: it holds the unit rock-steady, even on my tapered handlebars. It is a slightly modified design from the ones aparrently shipped originally (the instructions came with an addendum for it) and I am having none of the problems other reviews have mentioned. The unit is quite large and heavy so I did worry that the bracket would not be up to it, but that appears to be unfounded. I would still be wary of using this lamp off-road where it would be subjected to rather more vibration.
The light is clearly very visible: oncoming cars now dip their headlights immediately - which they did not always do before. I suspect having _two_ good front lights helps in that respect, though.
The only reservation I have so far is the battery life. The battery pack drains quite quickly and the instuctions say it is good for 300 charges, so it looks like it will have to be replaced in due course."

Emerging from the gloom
Pros: High Quality, Adjustable, Good Fit
Cons: Expensive, Bulky
"I bought this as my cycling buddy has one and it has been great in all weathers and situations, just wished I checked which version he had. Mine arrived, was charged and fitted, easy with the supplied bracket, and off on an evening training ride. This unit is twice the size and weight as his and does a look a little oversized on the bike - but much more powerful. I've rationalised the size and weight with the fact it will only be used on training rides and what it is important is clear, bright vision. There is a little bit of shake and wobble which is unnerving, I'll just keep checking the fit before each ride. Bought an extra bracket for the mountain bike - saves the hassle. My only gripe is that these lights could do with a low battery warning light. Size: 105mm x 74mm x 44mm"

Cons: Bulky, bracket poor quality
"This headlight finally lights up the road adequately for me and has a flashing function and low light also. The only problem with it is that it vibrates even on a smooth road so that the light appears to dim a little: There is a marked difference between the output when I rest my hand upon the housing and stop it shaking, and the light it gives when it vibrates.
Seems to be water repellent so far. Easy to use.
The band that wraps around the handlebar bracket that the light clips into is too narrow for the proportions and weight of the light. Having seen others comment on this, I tried to buy the sturdier bracket Cateye make. The Cateye website says the SP model available on Wiggle is the most up-to-date bracket for that job - DON'T buy it for this - it doesn't fit."

Excellent Front Lamp
"I use this lamp on unlit roads and tracks and it gives more than enough light forward and also out to the side to the edge of the road.
It is a little bulky and heavy you intend to take it off and carry around afterwards but nothing to drastic.
Recommended."

Pros: rechargeable
Cons: bracket is flimsy
"I am a weekend road cyclist but also commute to work on a fixie and needed a decent light for winter riding and wanted a rechargeable light so that I am not spending a fortune on batteries. The light itself is brilliant, plenty of power and easy to switch between functions whilst riding. The bracket however broke after 4 weeks of commuting, only about 250km's. It did look pretty flimsy when I got it out of the box and I only ride from 12km's into the city in Melbourne on main roads so I can only imagine it would last a lot less if ridden either offroad or on damaged roads.
Wiggle have looked after me with a replacement bracket and you can buy replacement brackets cheaply but I would rather pay a bit more and get a bracket which is going to last the distance."

light unplugged
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, High Quality
Cons: Bulky
"This things well made, gives adequate lighting output, and is easy to work with, by virtue of being cable-free. It's quite solid, compared to models with a light unit + separate cable-connected battery pack. Nice to handle - Slim shape fits into your hand well. I use a small Cateye flasher for day-time use - this uses the same fitting - points for convenience. The light power is definitely not a match for Lithium Ion models, but does the job okay, at 1/2 the price. I've done 4 X 40minute rides to work, still going strong.
Points for : self contained - no cables on your bike, good price, well made with good styling, uses a regular cateye bar-mount.
Against : won't light up the whole road, like a top-end lithium-ion light,
greater weight on the bars, if that's any worry, size .

Brilliant commuter light
Pros: Rugged, High Quality, bright
Cons: Expensive
"PROS: For those of you who - like me - commute in the dusk/evening this light is perfect. I wouldn’t use it off road as I’m not sure the clamp could handle and drops or big hits but for commuting on roads and paths it is easily more than enough. The unit itself also feels solid like it might be able to take a drop to the floor - but i'm hoping it doesnt come to that.
Although it is expensive comparatively (compared to knogs for example) it is in and entirely different ballpark. It is nearly bright enough to compete with car headlights and lights up reflective signs a long way down the road.
Visibility in front is good and it has good dispersion to the sides and little lost above the light.
The recharging is awesome and means no batteries needing to be taken out and put in. I charge it once a week and it barely seems to be dimming at the end of the 5 ish hours on flashing and low beam. I barely use high beam but good for a few darker corners.
CONS: The main problem is the awkwardly placed recharging port on the device and the on off button is a bit fiddley but you get used to both these problems very quickly. It may also be a touch heavy for any gram counters out there, but for regular riders it will be totally fine.
All in all a great light."

Very Clunky
Cons: Unadjustable, Not Enough Features, Bulky, Poor Fit
"Very bright beam of a good spead and distance. However, very heavy and clunky on roads a liitle rough it makes you feel like it will fall off. Charge light is useless. Check size as fitting on drop bars difficult, It is big. Might suit commuter with wide bars and flat roads. No good for off road or racing bikes."

Bright enough
Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged, Adjustable
Cons: Bulky
"You can pay more and get brighter lights if you wish however this light is hard to go past. The battery life and charge time is excellent and no bulky battery packs to store on the bike or on your person - all internal here. Flash function works really well and gets plenty of attention. High and low beam also works as promised - easy to toggle between all modes. A little bulky however still worth it I feel given it's other redeeming features. During winter months I'm leaving and coming home in the dark and I ride on some pitch black back roads on the way. This light gives me about 10-15 metres visibility of the road and cars can definitely see me easily. I bought the the other updated bracket as recommended by others and I have found it to be really good. It is also very easy and quick to take off for racing and it hasn't marked by carbon bars at all either."

"This light does exactly what it promises. The light is very bright and in flashing mode is visible by day. It's a bit bulky but then it's an all in one. No separate battey to attach, no cables to worry about."
