Date: March 15, 2010 They're ok, but do you really need a flat side?
Pros: Versatile
Cons: Bulky, Poor Fit

"I use these pedals on my commuter bike, buying them because I thought I might want to ride the bike in regular shoes occasionally, and they have a non-clip-in side for that. What I found was that I almost never use them without cycling shoes - it just feels awkward an insecure to do so. (That's not a criticism of the pedal, it's just that once you use clip-ins, you likely won't want to go back.)

Now, for use with clip-ins, these pedals are inferior to the A520 model, which has more foot support and better cornering clearance. So unless you're really sure that you're going to be using these a lot in regular shoes, I'd recommend getting the A520s instead.

Pros: Comfortable, Great Value, Lightweight

"When I bought these I had a hybrid bike, My use was mainly commuting so wanted the platform. Having had a moment with toe straps decided no more embarrassing to use spd's. So purchased and lost courage. Since then bought a road bike and decided to fit pedals at weekend. Used all week with no issues. I did purchase the multi-release cleats for commuting however ! Well worth it as more likely to be surprised on the way to work.

A good first step

"I purchased these for my flat bar road commute bike (in fact only bike). Great pedals. Light weight. Easy to get in and out of. And can still ride to the local shops on a weekend in my regular shoes."

Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile

"These are a fantastic combo pedal, if you have no desire to put cleated shoes on every time you mount your steed, these pedals are the business!

They provide good grip in normal trainers, even in the wet, but have the option of using the cleat side as and when you decide to don the proper bike sneakers.

Overall a well engineered, lightweight set of pedals with the usual Shimano quality.

Date: February 15, 2010 good value first off clipless
Pros: Adjustable, Comfortable, Durable, High Quality, Rugged

"bought these as I use my bike for commuting to work and back and I did not want to wear my racing shoes to work. The clipless system works great, easy to set weather to be tight or loose, and really easy to learn how to use.

I like these pedals a lot, and have since bought SPD pedals for all my bikes.

"bought these as a first pair of clipless pedals, and haven't been disappointed. Easy to use as flats too, when you aren't wearing cycling shoes or you need to stop and go frequently. They seems to be well made and feel solid underfoot. I would recommend to anyone who is new to cycling."

Pros: Adjustable, Comfortable, High Quality
Cons: easy to overtighten

"These are very good well manufactured SPD pedals.
Unfortunately I wasn't concentrating when adjusting these and managed to jam the mechanism on one of them so I can longer get my foot to stay clipped in. My fault but easy to do. I will have to get my Dremmel out and flat a couple of sides of the adjuster so I can take a spanner to it.

Pros: Adjustable, Comfortable, Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile

"These are great touring/commuting/cruising pedals. The flat side has a large and supportive platform that is good for all shoe types - even sandals! The flip-side is the standard easy to use Shimano SPD.
Cleverly, the pedals stay oriented to the platform that you are using when you take your foot off the pedal or clip out.
These are well made and lightweight - highly recommended.
I use these on my commuter (mountain bike) and they are great for powering to and from work in bike shoes and also tootling around with the kids in sandals or riding home in civvies

Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, High Quality, Rugged

"I bought these to go on my new touring bike, having previously only used road-type clip in pedals on my racer.

The idea of clip in one side and standard the other is excellent; although the beaty of SPD in my opinion is that the recessed cleats allow you to always cycle in your bike shoes. At first I found these slightly difficult to clip into on the move but soon got used to them. As you are pedalling they seem to stay in the same plane which, once you are used to it, makes it easier to clip in. Unlike road pedals which have an unbalanced weight distribution and therefore a different "clip in" technique.

Overall I'd say I'm very happy with them. I've ridden a few hundred miles with them now and they are high quality, comfortable pedals that I would recommend.

Pros: Versatile
Cons: Expensive, not for road

"Bought these as first pair of clip ins for use on a road bike. Used with DHB R1 shoes. Easy enough to get out of but, on road shoes I found them difficult to clip in. Imagine that on MTB shoes, where the cleat is recessed into the sole of the shoe then they would be much easier.

As I found I never used the flat side with trainers I bought a pair of SPD SL pedals and have found them much easier to clip into.

In short the A530's are not a good first pair of clip ins if you will only ever use clip in shoes on a road bike. Probably fine for MTB type shoes.

Pros: Rugged
Cons: first set broke

"Small platform for using normal shoes or for not clipping into and the otherside is a fine spd pedal. Good for touring or a versatile bike for the pub and for cycling. I moved onto SPD-SL so these got put on my girlfriends bike who likes and uses them with and without cleats.

First set made a bad clicking sound from the axle so they got exchanged but not had a problem with the next set.

"I chose the dual sided spd's / flats so i could wear normal trainers if i was out with the family, and they do the job, non spd side can be a little slippery if it rains .......and if you forget you're not clipped in , good purchase."

Pros: Attractive, Comfortable

"I bought these pedals for my road bike. I had Bike Hut pedals before but these are far, far better. The clip in feels really solid and the release is nice and easy.

Flip the pedals over and you've got a normal pedal, something I find useful at traffic lights and when there are hazards around.

These pedals are also really comfortable. I'd highly recommend them to anyone commuting or touring that wants the flexibility of a single-sided pedal.
