Garmin Edge 705
Pros: High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile
"I bought my Garmin Edge 705 a few weeks ago and so far have found it indispensible. I tend to seek out quieter routes when out cycling, and end up taking several sheets of A4 paper with directions for a longer ride. Difficult to read when cycling! With the Garmin, I can pre-plan my route online (more later), upload it to the 705 and then just follow the route as I ride without needing to stop.
I've found that the Garmin amazingly flexible. There are several configurable screens, with dozens of different data fields that you can display if you want to e.g. heart rate (with a monitor of course), elevation, gradient, time to next turn, distance to next turn, average speed, top speed, various lap information (if you are using multiple laps of a course) etc. etc.
Reviews I read before buying said that the user guide was not much use, and they were right. It basically tells you how to press the buttons in the right order but gives you no idea how to get the most out of your Garmin. This knowledge comes from trial and error. So for example I had the "Auto Pause" set on my first few rides and the thing was constantly beeping at me until I figured out how to turn that feature off.
The other niggle that I have had is that, just like a computer, if you put garbage in, you get garbage out. So, when you are creating a route map online you need to ensure that the mapping site you are using follows the roads (assuming you are on a road bike) otherwise the Garmin constantly tells you that you've lost the course. I use bikeroutetoaster.com to map out my routes and then download them as a TCX file to the Garmin (there's a feature on the site to do this for you). But if you use the bikeroutetoaster feature to add warning points before each turn, these points seem to end up being off the road in someone's front garden and the Garmin thinks that you have lost the route while you follow the road rather than off-roading across front gardens or fields. Moral - don't use the warning points on bikeroutetoaster. Maybe I need to find a different mapping site to use.
Overall I have been extremely please with my purchase. A little expensive, but it's a great device. More time spent on the user manual would be good, but it's kind of fun figuring out what all the different features do :-)
Wiggle of course is great. Good value and superfast delivery."

Great Training Partner
Pros: Adjustable, High Quality
"I could write a really lengthy review on this but there is no need as it is the ultimate all in one cycling trainer with extras for the fanatic!
A statisticions dream!
Plan your route, upload and concentrate on your cycling rather than worry about getting lost.
Without doubt this has many features that only a fanatical serious cyclist will ever use, however it is all there if needed.
Yes it is expensive but you won't regret getting one!
I'd get the Cadence sensor package as trusting the satelitte for speed doesn't seem very accurate to me!"

"Having spent time looking at reviews of different computers I took the plunge and bought the Garmin 705. It does everything I could possible want and more...very easy to set up on my bike and I love the fact that I can map my routes in advance and then download them onto the Garmin. However, the instructions are enough to get it set up but don't really give you any any hints or tips so I'm working it out as I go...being my first cycling computer I could have really done a more detailed user guide as I'm sure there is much more on there than I am using at the moment. Overall, a bit pricey but it stops me getting lost and I love being able to track all my training stats."

Pros: Durable, Good Fit, High Quality
Cons: Expensive
"I bought this for doing LEJOG and navigating my way through the country. Since then I've found it to give much more than just that.
My favourite thing is planning a training ride and being able to sit back and enjoy turn by turn without having to think too much at all where I need to be going. Then when you get back you can see what you cadenc, heartrate, maximum and average speeds have been. I like my stats and this allows you to investigate and compare your performances.
Battery life is very good and you can expect over 8 hours continuous use. It is well sealed from the elements with no water ingress even in the worst conditions. Heartrate band sits comfortably and you can forget it is there. Cadence sensor clamps on and stays where it should be with some careful placement.
The garmin website allows you to upload your rides and you can make private or public and share links with people as you see fit. You can also investigate this for other rides in your areas. Third party websites are best used to route map your rides or upload existing rides.
It isn't hard to get to grips with the unit and how it works with a little patience and some time. Just investigate it, map simple routes, go off route to see what happens and use resources on the internet where the manual comes up short.
It is expensive and you need decent maps to get the best use out of it. I've got full euro maps and they are spot on in the UK and on the continent.
Just invest in it and get out cycling and use it. It has defo spurred me into more cycling, made my cycling more enjoyable and having just checked the stats I've seen I've clocked up 4000 miles in the last year with maximum heartrate of 197, average rate of 154, max speed of 48.3mph, 275281 calories burned, 213958 feet climbed and more to add to it in the coming years. I'm more than chuffed with it."

Garmin 705 my thoughts

Pros: Adjustable, Durable, Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile, easy to use
Cons: Expensive, Limited Color Choices
"This GPS-enabled cycle computer knows no limits. You get heart rate, cadence, turn-by-turn directions, power data (from ANT+™-enabled third-party power meters) – the works. You can even share your data with other Edge 705 buddies after your ride. All wireless with a color display, this is no ordinary cycle computer.
The display unit can be mounted on your handle bars or on your stem. Setup of the unit proved to be so amazingly easy, the bike mount went on super easy and initially that’s all you really need to do as the speed and mapping are taken care of with GPS, the additionally supplied Cadence/speed sensor can then be added to enhance the accuracy of the unit, The units, user/bike details are also very easy to setup along with training zones for heart rates.
You can also setup the on screen display (screens) as you wish, zoom levels on maps, information on the display is all user defined and is great for being able to see exactly what you want, when you want.
The unit comes with basic maps which are suitable for seeing roughly were you are. We went one step further and added route-able maps from OPENSTREETMAPS, an open source mapping community built by the users. These maps work brilliantly on the Garmin 705 edge, though of course they require upkeep by us, the users, so the more people who contribute the better.
Having done a few longer rides over various different style roads, the unit worked flawlessly. The data was easily readable, quick to respond to when pressing keys and the backlight proved to be a really useful addition. The satellite connection is very stable, remaining fixed through underpasses and tunnels. The chest strap for the HRM is really comfortable and never loses connection to the unit, something which plagued old Polars, so another bonus point for Garmin.
Installing the speed and cadence senor was relatively easy, using zip ties and adhesive tape on the back of the crank for the cadence sensor. The cadence and speed sensor provides a further level of accuracy and uses both satellite and real time data from the sensor to establish speed. The cadence sensor sits on the opposite side to the drive train using zip ties and you attach the pedal magnet by adhesive tape the magnet must pass within 5mm to the unit.
Speed, heart rate and cadence alerts can be set to five different heart rate zones, 50-60%, 60-70%, 70-80%, 80-90%, 90-100%. The speed alerts also work with the barometric altimeter and change the speed zones automatically as you ride. It’s also compatible with ANT+ power meters, for more serious cyclists.
Most cyclists don’t pour over the statistics from their bike computers; however some of us love to analyze our rides, the route and data. One thing to consider with the Edge is that it is not just a GPS mapping unit, rather also gives you the option to overlay one of your previous rides. The ability to download a GPX file from one of the training websites is very helpful as you can upload a ride from someone else to your Garmin and simply follow the line on the map. The MapSource maps allow you to plot your ride on as well as see charts of all your stats.
The Garmin can be used with Garmin training center, a PC application in which you can download all your data from the 705 to your PC so to analyse it. This includes your heart rate zones, altitude climbed, average speed according to the steepness of the road. The Training Centre gives you a general overview of your data but for more serious cyclists there is other software available for more in-depth analysis.
The Edge has 1Gb of memory which is more than enough to have access to all your ride data plus you can plug a 2gb micro sd card into the unit and backup your rides.
The unit performs well in the wet, although the USB cover on the rear could be discribed as "not quite adequate". In practice however on wet rides there have been no issues and online forums discuss have also not highlighted this as a problem.
Garmin claims a battery life of 15 hours and although we haven’t had the opportunity to test this for 15 hours straight, we are assuming that is an accurate estimate based upon our rides with the 705 EDGE. Even with the HRM on and using the back light occasionally we believe this it would meet these claims. The battery is also easily charged with any Micro USB cable either from the PC/MAC or from the mains power.
The Edge 705 performs flawlessly and can be a valuable training tool. The GPS maintains a strong satellite connection and reliably tells you where you are and points the way to your destination. The detailed maps and directions are spot-on. A single disappointment is that the screen isn’t anti glare, something which you would really assume would have been considered. At the end of the ride however, this is one of the most useful gadgets a rider can buy.
For what you pay you get the head unit, Heart Rate Monitor Strap, 2x bike mounts, Cadence and Speed sensor plus magnet, USB cable, Charger, CD's and manuals (which are somewhat minimalistic in terms of detail)."

No longer afraid to explore...
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, highly customisable
Cons: Expensive
"I first touched a 705 at the Cycle show earlier this year, and immediately my doubts about the £300 price tag melted away. A couple of months of saving, (and birthday vouchers), later and I finally had one of my own and it was worth the wait...
First off, it's very easy to use, even with thick winter gloves and the highly customisable screens mean the information you want is always at hand. As a training tool it is brilliant, (although not sure how accurate the calorie counts are), giving great information on everything from cadence to elevation, via heart rate and speed, (and power if you have an ant+ compatible unit which I don't but now seriously considering getting). The only thing lacking is a few tweaks to the garmin myconnect website/software to improve access to the information and devising training plans etc., although there are plenty of 3rd party alternatives available.
As a GPS unit I use the unit all the time - it has enabled me to explore beyond my normal areas safe in the knowledge the "take me home" is a few buttons press away. The unit has even made it on several car journeys with me. This portability is brilliant, as it means when I fancy some off-road and jump on my mtb I just put the unit in my pocket and off I go - I then come home to having the same trainin g data I have from my trusty road steed.
All in all this is a fantastic unit - a stretch too far for most casual users in which I include myself. However, for serious cycling enthusiasts (or gadget enthusiasts like me) I can't recommend this highly enough.
I've given it 5 stars, and if it were £50-£100 cheaper I'd give it even more..."

Unbeatable GPS
Pros: Attractive, Durable, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: Expensive, software quality
"I bought the Edge 705 to help me make better use of the local lanes, and expanded it with a contour map SD to be able to see the full horrors of approaching hills. My cycling is typically 25-30 miles, 2 or 3 times a week, plus a 400-mile trip to Paris in the summer.
It's an outstanding piece of equipment - small, light yet substantial, with simple controls and a great little display. Hooking up the handlebar mount and cadence sensor was simple, then one charge from a PC USB port or using the power adaptor and it's ready to go.
In use, it's fantastic. Once you've configured the display to your taste - choosing what you want displayed from an extensive menu of speeds, times, heart rate, cadence etc - you can use it as a bike computer, or load it with pre-determined routes from a PC/Mac, or get it to calculate its own routes. The map clearly shows directions and turns, bleeping for your attention when it needs it. When you hop off the bike you can easily unclip it, but the mount feels robust and secure.
Satellite lock-on is normally very quick (30s max) and battery life seems to be around 12 hours before it needs a recharge.
I have two minor criticisms. The first is that Garmin's PC/Mac software is pretty basic compared with other offerings (although at least they now have a Mac offering), and it isn't compatible with MemoryMap, but these are niggles, not show-stoppers. Secondly, I've had a couple of occasions where the Edge has become confused for some reason and calculated a new route that wasn't the one I wanted, but hasn't told me - although I'm happy to assume for now that was because of user error.
In all, this has transformed my cycling - I'm happy to go exploring random lanes, knowing that I'll be able to find a quick way home when I want to, and as a result I'm loving the new routes that I've found. If you want to add a new dimension to training, you should seriously consider the Edge 705."

Pros: High Quality, Versatile, all-in-one data recording device
Cons: occasional glitches/data drops or spikes
"The Edge 705 while not being perfect is about as close as we've gotten 9so far) to an all-in-one data solution. It will pick up power from any ANT+ capable wireless power device with pretty good reliability. The other features (speed/distance/elevation/routing/HRM etc) are all native to the device and do a good job all-in-all. With appropriate time for preparation you can upload and/or design routes, get directions, follow a course using a target time (ghost rider style) and save routes down after you've ridden them for further data mashing or sharing with friends or.... well the list seems to go on for a long way.
It does have the occasional software niggles and I'd say it was about 95% reliable (of course it's terribly frustrating when you hit that 5%) but there are not infrequent software updates that seem to be moving the device ever closer to a totally unfrustrating experience.
Be prepared for the odd issue and enjoy all the benefits.
Recommended.

Garmin Edge 705 (road version)

Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Rugged, Adjustable, Versatile, displays what you want where you want
Cons: no cons
"The Garmin Edge 705 is not a commonly found version from Garmin's vast range. It was recommended to me by a guy I met whilst doing an 830 km stage event, in Oct 2011.
It has EVERYTHING you could want from a cycle computer - and a lot more that maybe you didn't know you wanted. When initially booted up, it can take a few minutes to find satellites but, once locked on, it gives you exactly what you need. You can telll the Edge 705 exactly what you want to see and where you want to see it in the main display - heart rate, cadence, speed, time, etc. The Edge 705 displays exactly where you are, tracks your progress, shows you where you have to go if you ask it and will even get you home if you are lost. I live in very rural Brittany, France, and ride on very small roads, but the Edge 705 always knows where I am.
The Edge 705 can do much more than I have asked of it at the moment and I am looking forward to testing its full potential in 2012.
My only negative point would be that the Edge 705 finds it very difficult to find satellites when you're indoors, but take it outside for a minute or so and it locks on very easily, even on dull, cloudy and overcast days.
Enjoy!

Good but not completely necessary
Pros: High Quality, Adjustable
Cons: Expensive
"I've done about 6 rides since buying the Edge 705 and it's brilliant if you like stats even if you don't do anything with them.
The Garmin Connect site is great for viewing and sharing your rides but it is a little more complicated to plan a course from scratch to upload to the device. I've done a couple where the route appears on the map but it doesn't give you any turn warnings.
You can use the Garmin Connect site and I've also found Bikeroutetoaster useful but you have to be careful that you click each waypoint after the junction so that it gives you the correct directions.
All in all a good unit but the interface isn't that intuitive so can take a while to figure it out."

Does everything you could want in a bike GPS
Pros: Adjustable, Versatile
Cons: slow
"As the title says, it does everything you could want in a bike GPS. Measures speed, cadence, heart rate. Even picks up power meters if you have one. All can be downloaded and read into a suitable program (not supplied so you'll have to search around - the free one on the Garmin website is good enough for most).
The only drawbacks are that by default it will try to recalculate your route if it decides it is appropriate and the logic used is a bit questionable - e.g. it once redid my route whilst I was going along a 2 mile straight road.
It is also very slow to calculate routes. 40 mins seems to be normal.
You need to turn off the recalculate option and get it to work out the route a long time ahead of setting out.
Not a huge hassle once you are aware of it.
I've heard people complaining that it has problems with sim cards (i.e. cards holding detailed maps that plug into a little socket in the base) in the rain, with the water getting in, but I got caught in a downpour and nothing bad happened."

Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Versatile
Cons: Expensive, item is not as described by wiggle

Routes can be planned on sites such as GPSies and downloaded. Data can be uploaded to Garmin connect site, so you can analyse how your heart rate varies with speed and altitude. If you have a regular training circuit, you can effectively compete against your own previous performance.
One big complaint - the details state (3 times) that it contains a map micro-SD. The box has two stickers on it to say that a micro -SD map is included, but no map is present and Wiggle do not want to know."

"Great buy and would recommend it to anyone plus really easy to use. Best bit is when you finish a ride and you can check out all your ride date by way of graphs etc on your computer."

WELL CHUFFED
Pros: High Quality, Good Fit
Cons: Expensive
"Ive done my research, drove my wife mad talking about it, saved my pennies, but now ive got one and im impressed. They arent cheap, i went all in and went for the heart rate monitor and cadence sensor and im glad that i did. Setting up the Garmin and bits on the bike was quite straight forward (im not brill at things like that). I spent a few minutes to set up the unit and took it out for a test run.....only a couple of miles to check everything. I can honestly say that b for havin the unit i wasnt very savvy with all the stats and jargon about heart zones, calories and cadence but now i feel like a fountain of knowledge. I log each ride on the garmin website and can easily check my performance and route taken. The unit is very accurate. i am especially pleased with how many calories i burn!!!!! very pleased with this purchase."

Garmin edge 705
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, High Quality, Adjustable, Versatile
"This is a fantastic piece of kit. Yes it weighs a little more than other computers, but for training purposes it is fantastic to use. I use a Mac, and it has integrated seamlessly . It is very simple to use. I highly recommend this. But just make sure you buy a premium heart rate strap with this, as the supplied one is uncomfortable."
