Get heart rate, cadence, turn-by-turn directions, power data (from ANT+™-enabled third-party power metres) - the works. Even share your data with other Edge 705 friends after your ride. All wireless with a colour display, this is no ordinary cycle computer. Navigate Your Ride Lose yourself in the ride without losing your way. Edge 705 comes with a built-in basemap, plus it has a microSD™ card slot for adding map detail and storing workouts, courses and saved rides. Just plug in detailed MapSource® City Navigator® street maps on a preloaded data card and get turn-by-turn directions on a sunlight-readable, colour display as you pedal. Add optional topo mapping for your off-road adventures. Edge snaps easily into the included bike mount to guide you to your destination. Get the Data You Need Available in 3 versions, Edge 705 comes bundled with different accessories to keep you on top of your ride. Edge 705 automatically measures your speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb and descent, and records this data for your review¹. For extra-precise climb and descent data, Edge also incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation. It features a high-sensitivity receiver that holds a signal under trees and near tall buildings, and comes with a click stick for easy screen navigation. See Your Power Edge 705 works with third-party ANT+Sport-enabled power metres (check back soon to view list of compatible devices) to display your power output in watts as you ride. This valuable data shows you how hard you're working, regardless of conditions affecting your ride, so you can train smarter. Get a competitive advantage by viewing power output along with Edge data all on the same display and storing this information to analyse your workout. Measure Heart Rate and Cadence Garmin's innovative ANT+Sport wireless technology means you get heart rate and speed data with no strings attached. All versions of Edge 705 include a wireless heart rate monitor to measure your heart rate and track your heart rate zone. Some packages also include a speed/cadence sensor to monitor your pedaling cadence and wheel speed as you ride. You can even use it to train indoors because the sensor attaches to your rear wheel, not the front like most other computer systems. Now you can prove that 20-mile uphill climb with a 2000-foot elevation gain. Better yet, send it to your friend to ride. Sharing data is easy. Why didn't i get one earlier??
Pros: Attractive, Durable, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile, easy to use
Cons: Expensive
"So easy to use. I use Tracklogs software with OS maps to plan my routes, then the Garmin software to send to the Edge via USB and works perfectly. Make sure you download the free Garmin software to maximise the potential of the device - 'Training Centre' will keep track of your every route, and 'Garmin Connect' via a web-browser will enable you to download other users rides to your device as well as showing you your rides with relevant speed, elevation & heart rate."

Great but if you are new to Garmin ....
Pros: Durable, Rugged
Cons: Expensive
"there could and should be better instructions. This is a common complaint!
The item itself is great and as with all new electronic gear you have to get to know it. We went on a 240 mile 3 day ride without any Garmin practice and we had a few teething problems, but trial and error will sort it out.
All in all I would recommend it to a friend. i am loving the information it gives me / us and it will be a great tool.
It is expensive but you get quality and great information. There is nothing as good so there is no real choice - except the more expensive one!"

What else do you need?
Pros: Durable, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Rugged, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile
"This is the best piece of kit I have ever bought for cycling.
I use it for mountain biking. It tells me everything; speed, ascent, descent, distance, calories, etc. It shows me where I am, gives me directions, allows download of other peoples routes, I can plot routes on my Mac and sync, it plays finished routes on Google maps, it's strong, happy in all weathers, easy to use, blah, blah, blah!
It's not cheap but if you want a great training device, route planner, stat giver, ghost partner - this is a must."

Great gadget
Pros: Durable, Attractive, High Quality, Rugged
Cons: Expensive
"This is an excellent GPS unit. The unit is well designed and easy and intuitive to use. The screen is of a readable size, although it is annoying that it always starts up at the lowest illumination intensity irrespective of your settings. You will need to purchase a protective screen cover separately if you intend to use it during serious xc bashing. The buttons are easy to operate with gloves and cold hands, but it is difficult to adjust settings on the fly. The gps receiver is very strong, and I pick up signals even from inside my home. Uploading maps and routes is relatively easy, but you should download Garmin Mapsource instead of the supplied software. The only drawbacks are that it takes a long time - particularly if you are uploading to a memory card, and that uploading maps will overwrite the maps that are already in the GPS memory or on the memory card. Battery life is excellent and the bike mount is flexible to allow for mounting on both the stem and bars. It is great to have two mounts included and to be able to set the unit up for two bikes.
I wouldn't recommend the UK topo maps that are supplied in this bundle. They appear very basic and will not give the OS quality that you might expect from the description. Most of the off road tracks in my area are not on the map. I also found that the maps can get annoyingly cluttered by street names and other info when I am out. There are some very good alternatives (based on open map source) that can be downloaded for free from the internet. So save your money and do a bit of searching around."

Temperamental, brilliant but faulty
Pros: Attractive, Rugged, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: Expensive, Wears Out Easily, poor fixtures, slow
"The 705 as a all-in-one device that can give you just about everything you want in one device is phenomenal. From having two screens of data that you can switch between and are fully configurable - eg one screen for current data and another for lap data, current heart rate, zones, altitude, height climbed, you name it you have, except temperature for some odd reason. Very readable display, can switch to backlit under low light. Buttons well laid out, interface very intuitive and easy.
Setting up ANT+ equipment is ridiculously easy and yes, you can plug in anything ant+ and it will be recognised, you may need to redo a scan when switching from one HRM to another. Can coexist with other Ant+ devices, eg a regular Bontrager Ant+ bike computer.
What works less well?
My experience with using it as a mapping tool have been very frustrating and also fantastic. Eg, you can give it a restaurant name (in the Cities NT versions) and it will take you there, to the metre. But it is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, it regularly fails to update fast enough so you miss turns when using it as a nav aid, which can be a real pain and really excludes it as a tool in a car when driving in the city, even by bike it has been too slow but that is less annoying.
If you try and use it as a 'go to' device, don't dive it anything beyond about 30-40 kms from where you are. It simply does not have the power to resolve, and you will give up after 10-15 minutes of waiting. You have to be very careful of the settings you choose (car, off/on road etc...) as if you choose off-road, it *will* be very off road in some cases, and pretty much on some real discovery roads even on-road. This can make for some great discovery rides, but don't expect it to take you the easy way. When you get to junctions it can give very misleading instructions, or even totally incorrect ones (eg telling you turn around at a T junction and then telling you to turn around again 100 meters back and not getting out of the loop until you force it to recalculate).
It can tell you for example to 'stay on the left side of the road', when you are on a dual carriageway with cars coming the other way (on the continent) and the road is veering to the left after a few 100 meters or you are approaching a left hand crossing.
Otherwise accuracy of the maps is good and accuracy of distances travelled and heights climbed is accurate to an amazing degree. Setting up of the sensor to measure your tyre size is very easy and provides something like 98/99% accuracy, possibly better. The GPS readings on their own are not accurate enough to give decent instantaneous speed and certainly reduce accuracy by some 5-10%, esp when doing MTB.
The mount is absolute rubbish and the plastic release fails. They now use a quarter turn release mount on their new models. Really poor quality. It does not fall off the mount but the release wears very fast and then breaks as you force it to try and get the GPS off.
The seal for the USB is very poor and will rip off after a while. Very hard to open so you tend to yank and this will cause it to get ripped -> useless. Very likely cause that the unit's behavior became unpredictable after only 14 months. Now almost unuseable - if turned on you are not sure if it stays on 5 second, 5 minutes, 50 minutes. suspect either battery has a problem or the battery electronics are not working properly.
This is a pity as the unit is otherwise really solid and has taken plenty of hits, including a fall (i said a lie earlier, if the unit is not locked in properly it can slip out, as the latch wears out this will happen) at 50 Kph on tarmac.
One last note. Don;t bother to try and read the map it shows, the display is agonizingly slow, so say you want to pan across to your next destination, it is an exercise in frustration. You can zoom in and out and get great detail, but don't try and then flit around the map unless you have time on your hands.
Verdict? Absolute best bike tool out there in terms of sheer possibilities and practicality (until next model comes out) but has serious shortcomings as a navigational aid, poor quality fittings and possibly unreliable electronics. Much cheaper now than it used to be!

Like it
Pros: Great Value, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: ease of use
"I've gone through a lot of cycle computers, and this is my favourite so far. It's got everything I need, and creating training programs is far simpler than others I've owned. For the price, the route planning etc. is a bonus. I went for the MTB O/S map, as I knew I'd use it for walking as well.
I think the O/S topo map is fine, and has lots of important stuff like the location of pubs. Some folks have gripes about it, I think it's a case of expecting it to look just like a physical O/S map, which it won't on a 2 inch square screen. If you're sticking to roads, perhaps get the road package, my feel of it is it that it plans routes more sensibly. Or in fact get neither and download a map from the internet, there are plenty of free maps online, though you'll have to invest some into working this out.
Which brings me to the the fact that it takes a bit of learning to operate the funkier features, as the operating manual is a bit thin. It also has some quirks - for example to completely delete things from the device, you need to plug into your mac / pc, drag a whole folder in your trash / recycle bin, and clear out before unplugging again. There are plenty of forums & blogs with help though, and if like me you just want to know how to do stuff only when you want think of it, rather than learning from scratch, that's fine. Overall creating, uploading and sharing maps and training info is pretty easy.
In terms of robustness, it also has proven rugged and weather proof so far, surviving the Three Peaks Cyclocross race, as well as plenty of rainy training rides, plenty of drops, and it's taken it all.
I would totally recommend this as it provides everything you need – cycle computer, training computer and satnav in one pretty neat and good package.
PS note this package comes without a cadence/speed sensor, you'll have to buy separately, though it comes with computer mounts for two bikes."

"well hope this will improve with time as i get used to using it.........had quite a few phone calls to garmin for help and had to get a micro card as well to get the map downloaded onto it...bad point is that the only manual is on a dvd so hard to sit and learn how to work things out....one of those things that i think you could do with knowing someone else who has one to help you sort it out.....apart from the mapping the speed. heartrate .distance etc is easy to sort out....."

Garmin Edge 705 MTB Performance Package
Pros: Durable, quick start up, garmin connect
"Have used the Edge 705 in all weathers for both commuting and recreational cycling and I am happy with its performance.
The start-up is still a little long, but the satellite acquisition is quicker than on the 205. The 705 remembers the previous location and uses this information to speed up the process.
If the 705 is taken to a new location it has to "find" the satellites, making the time taken to be ready a little longer.
I have never had a problem with losing the signal when cycling through the tree-lined tracks.
The maps included with the performance package make this better value for money.
Used with the Garmin Connect website this is a very useful training tool, or method to keep a track of the miles."

Very Clever
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile
"It's a great bit of kit overall.
Setting up - never quite as easy as just following the directions, for me at least ! I had trouble getting the un-lock codes for the Topo mapping, after dozens of failed attempts and just when frustration was kicking in I went for the tried and trusted shutdown everything and restart, followed same procedure as the failed attempts and it worked straight away.
Pre-ride route mapping - for simple routes just do it right on the unit, for more complex rides use the Basemap software. It can take a little while to do either way but console yourself with the knowledge that minutes on the PC could save a lot more time out on the trail.
Training Center software is very straightforward and gives you loads of data, just need to learn how to make best use of it !"

"I purchased the 705 so I would have a GPS integrated with a cycle computer; the cycle computer is good but no better than products of half the price. The menus are easy to use and the set up is very straight forward.
I wasn’t so impressed with the GPS unit, the Maps aren’t of OS 25000 standard and the detail is rather poor which isn’t good enough to follow bridle ways, which was the main reason I spent the extra to get this unit. You certainly still need an OS map in areas you’re not familiar with.
Now for the worst bit on the third time I used it and after 25 miles on the bike it just fell off the mount, I’m sure it was clipped in properly so tend to think the mount / catch is suspect and it bounced into the undergrowth not to be seen by me again.
The unit itself doesn’t look robust enough to stand up to any mayor get offs so my recommendation would be if you want a cycle computer to aid training get one without a GPS and if you want a GPS look at something else but unless I can find anything with the detail required I’m sticking to a map and compass.

Excellent data recorder
Pros: High Quality
Cons: Expensive
"Stops me from getting lost when out on a new ride and taking random trails in the new forest. Also works really well with Garmin Training and base camp software for reviewing rides and workouts, and for creating routes before heading out for a ride.
One enhancement would be if the bike profiles had different data pages available - i.e. I want cadence, Avg cadence etc on the road bike, but when taken offroad don't need those data fields and is a pain to change each time.
Maps are not easy to load (had to re-enter on the garmin website many times), and are expensive. Not so easy to read either. The basecamp application is not very user friendly, takes a while to get the hang of it."

705 MTB Edge
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight, Good Fit
Cons: Expensive, no power adapter for use in canada, free uk topo map software is useless in canada
"Great product but as a customer that resides in Canada the unit should come equipped with a power adapter plug that can be used in North America.
Would also be nice to get Canadian topographic software with the device, the free UK based software is useless to me in Canada."

"This was bought to make it easy to plan and follow routes for bike riding. Predominately off-road. So far it has stopped us from getting lost when I have followed the directions. The only time I went awry was when I thought I knew better than the Garmin Edge 705, and soon realised I'd taken a wrong turn.
Good clear screen with great graphics, easy to use, and tough. I keep dropping it!. The signal strength is brilliant, even when covered by dense trees."

Consider the 305 instead
Pros: Attractive, Versatile, full featured
Cons: Expensive, Limited Color Choices, not orange ;-)
"I had a Garmin Edge 205, and long wanted the 705 with Topo maps; mainly because I'm a gadget geek, but also because I was tired of the spurious altitude data the 205 was recording (this is because it uses GPS data for altitude rather than the barometric altimeter that the 705 has). I also fell for the marketing shots of the lovely maps.
The reality is a bit different as the maps, once installed on the device are quite hideous to look at, with a yellow background and lines of various dirty colours overlaid and very hard to read. The navigation works pretty well though, and I had no problem unlocking the maps on my PC. To unlock you are asked to supply serial number and unlock code. The DVD comes with a label saying serial number and unlock code, however it's the serial number of the Edge that you must enter, not what's on the DVD - maybe this is catching people out, it's not very clear I must say.
Anyway, I've used the 705 on a couple of rides, and I do like the improved altitude readings, along with real-time ride profile on-screen. The other thing I like is the larger display which is nice and bright and easier to read than the smaller monochrome 205 for an old codger like me.
In conclusion, if mapping is not that important to you, but you want the altimeter and heart rate, then go for the Edge 305 which has these features without mapping. I also feel the build quality of the 205/305 is a bit better as the 705 feels a bit plasticky whereas the 205 is very solid.
If it's features you're after, then look no further, this has it all."

Good device; flawed maps and software
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: Expensive, poor mapping, poor software
"The Edge 750 is a fine unit with excellent and accurate GPS reception, which can bring you a wide range of information while you are out on the trail, and offers extensive capabilities for tracking workout data. But it is let down by its vector mapping system, which instead of recording maps as images (i.e. looking like paper maps), renders maps from a collection of underlying geographical data. Fine in theory, but in practice, the quality of the results displayed on the unit (where it really matters, rather than the PC screenshots they show you in marketing materials) is poor, with barely adequate legibility and a high degree of ambiguity over what it is actually showing. The GB topo maps (included in this package) appear to be missing important data that you'd take for granted on an OS map; and using both these and the Swiss equivalent, it was consistently almost impossible to get the maps to display the right level of detail (place names, contours etc.). I wondered whether this was a legacy of Garmin being a maker of automotive GPS where low-level detail is less of an issue.
In addition, on the PC side, the Garmin software (the only official option) appears more concerned with digital rights protection than usability. Unlocking the maps for use on the GPS can be a serious ordeal, and Garmin have locked things down so much than you can only preview a small area of the map in the middle of the PC screen. Garmin's response to this feedback - that I was wrong and that their device, software and maps were perfectly well suited to their purpose."
