A great training aid
Pros: Adjustable, High Quality, Versatile, infitinatly customisable, masses of features, makes solo training more constructive and fun, very accurate
Cons: Expensive, cadence sensor not waterproof, handlebar mount breaks easily, cadence sensor may not fit monocoque rear forks
"A wonderful gadget to assist with training. Has a bewilidering potential to customise views for individual preferences which can be changed easily to suit different training regimens (eg focussing on total altitude climbed and rate of ascent for hill training, or on average speed, average Heart Rate , time in a particular zone etc for interval / stamina training,
To get the best out of its amazing accuracy - do an on-line sortware upgrade - easy if you follow the instuctions.
One of the great features that assists the solo trainer is racing the virtual training partner - a little figure that can be viewed with distance that he is ahead or behind - a virtual rider that is constructed on the basis of your previous performance on that particular route.
The cadence sensor is a great asset - but
CAUTION - it is not as waterproof as it should be for the mountain biker like me who regularly ploughs through streams etc. Garmin replaced it wihout quibble, but I dare not use it in extreme conditions. Check the net for advice on how to more thoroughly waterproof the cadence sensor. Furthermore the sensor may not work on monocoque rear swing-arm rear forks - eg some of the Orange and quad link Marins - check with the online fitting instructions from the Garmin website before you buy a cadence sensor for such a bike.
Another weak point it that the braket that holds the GPS on the bike is lamentably weak - I snapped the catch off three of them in 6 months. For an expensive piece of kit Garmin really could have done better with both the durability of the bracket and the cadence sensor.
A final thought - do buy a generic screen protector for the GPS before you start using it.. Any old cheap one for a handheld PC from ebay will do. You would be surprised how often I have ground mine into the dust / mud flipping the bike over to fix a flat.
When all is said and done - a great if not expensive peice of kit that will transform long solo rides and regular training sessions into much more enjoyable and constructive events. I don't think I can ever go back to simply staring blankly at the track or the wheel infront........ I am afraid I'm addicted to using the little sucker and I would be surprised if you won't be too!

Garmin 705
Pros: Adjustable, Comfortable, Durable, Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"This is the finest bike computer in the market, had many over the years, and lots of mates with Polar's. I have had a 305 for about 4 years and a 705 for 2 years.
Until you have a bike computer that is spatialy aware you don't know what your missing.
Virtual Partner it great.
Putting in courses is great for long road races where you need to know what is coming up, hills, valleys, feed stations etc, all lets you be in the right spot in the Peleton at the right time.
Upload to Google Earth is cool too.
Customise screens is great.
It's expensive but not in comparison to other products on the market and it's worth every cent when you are lost on some backroad miles from home.
Have recommended to many people and all happy end users.
Cons.
The mount is flimsy, make sure you silicone the two parts together to avoid fatigue cracks and the unit flying down the road when that happens.
The Cadence Sensor is not fully waterproof, needs to be looked after, short battery life is a sign you have moisture in the unit. Return it to Garmin, upside is they are good at replacing both parts under warranty.

Great buy
Pros: Versatile
"Great product at a great price. Bright, clear display with heaps of functions...more than you'll ever need. Everything from basic speed, time distance to gradients, HR, laps, and heaps of ways to help you train. Download software to your pc to manage workouts and share them with your mates. I'm loving' it !!! Would like the base map to have a bit more detail and would also prefer the soft strap HR monitor, but only minor deficiencies. Go get one."

Can't imagine riding without it
Pros: Durable, Attractive, Rugged, High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile
"I held off a long time before taking the plunge and buying a Garmin for the bike, but since I have it's changed the way I ride.
It's easy to set up and customise so that you have just the data you want available to you.
Being able to see my heart rate alongside the current gradient has been a real boost to my fitness, as I know when I'm going all out and when I could really push a bit harder.
Following pre-planned routes is easy and so useful (once you've turned off auto-rerouting, which can confuse things).
One issue I had with the unit on my first ride is that you really have to make sure it's clipped into the mount properly. I didn't and the first time I pressed a button on my first ride with the device, it slid out of the mount and hit the tarmac at 20mph. Fortunately, it's solid as a rock and was barely scratched."

Great Gadget
Pros: High Quality, Versatile
"This is going to be a life saver in our upcoming cycle to Rome. Very accurate and is compatible with some good route planning websites.
Only thing is the maps that come with it are not too detailed in terms of the smaller roads. This in not an issues as the garmin still plots the route but might be nice to have fuller detail straight off."

Useful, but not yet perfect
Pros: Versatile, many functions
Cons: Expensive, Bulky, Wears Out Easily
"I have always been satisfied with my Polar cycling computer. But I needed a GPS system to complement it. Until recently, my Polar was always my main computer; I decided to use Garmin only from now on.
The first handling of the unit is complicate. There are a lot of functions and the navigation is not so intuitive. After getting used to it, I still find it far from being perfect.
At the start-up, the satellites connection takes a lot of time in my opinion. Once connected, the GPS is precise.
Operating the map is difficult because the screen is small and the scrolling not precise. I prefer to draw my route on the computer before loading it to the unit. It is far from being as powerful as a car GPS, but it is a very good compromise.
Many cycling parameters are available and display can be customized to your needs and preferences.
Post-ride analysis of the heart rate data and other parameters on the computer is not as good as Polar ProTrainer. The Garmin Training Center software is a nightmare; Garmin Connect is much better and is accessible from anywhere as long as you can be connected to internet. Garmin has a still a lot to learn on this aspect.
The heart rate monitor plastic strap is not as comfortable as the Polar soft band, but it does the job perfectly. I am considering buying the new soft strap from Garmin, but only when they will have solved their technical problems. The ANT+ wireless communication protocol seems to be market standard.
The unit is bulky and on the heavy side. I still use my Polar unit during races. The life of the battery is acceptable and more than necessary for my usage.
The lever to release the unit from its handle bar/stem fixing base breaks all the time. It is good that they supply 2 sets in the box !
I added the memory card, the map of my country, and the speed/cadence sensor later. The total package is expensive. But when you look at its capacities, I think the price is fair. I don’t think Garmin has any competitors for now. Perhaps iPhone will be in a near future.
I may have put more emphasis on the weaknesses, but don’t get me wrong. I like my unit and I like Garmin products. It is a great piece of technology and there is room for improvement."

Good but make sure you budget for extra maps
Pros: Durable, Rugged, Adjustable, Lightweight
Cons: needs extra maps
"Received the unit in Australia in good time so top marks to Wiggle for that.
The basic unit itself is good (as you'd expect from Garmin) but the base map was poor. In order to use it in the forest trails, I had to purchase the additional Topo Australia map from Garmin which was an extra $229 (approx £133). Once purchased and downloaded, I try to install it on the device and received the message "Not enough space on the device" at which point I had to go out and buy an extra Micro card.
All good once we were finally up and running. I've been downloading .gpx files from the web and loading them into the 705 which is an absolute breeze and great for following already trodden trails (I've been using bikely.com)
The heart rate monitor is good for training purposes and seeing at which point you were about to have a coronary on your trail!
The battery life seems to be excellent although longer spells and weekends away will tell the real story.
Overall, After the initial pain and extra expense of the Topo map I'm loving it."

Excelent for training and trips
Pros: Durable, Rugged, High Quality, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"I have had my garmin 705 since they came out. It has been one of the best buys I have for my bikes. It is expensive especially if you get the maps for it but as far as I am concerned its worth it. Last year I planed and rode a 1000km trip from the Uk to the south of France in 7 days. I planned it using the Garmin Roadtrip on my mac loaded it onto my Edge and set off.
I did not once have to refer to the map I carried in my jersey pocket the Garmin had my route layed out and it made the journey so much more enjoyable. Not having to stop at all the junctions looking for the correct road.
I also used the edge to upload my route and stats from the day onto the blog I created each evening so that friends and family could track my progress.
The edge has crashed on me three times in 10000km. All hapened after 100km or so when I pressed the buttons quickly. A quick reset and it was back on track although the data recorded from the ride got currepted. However a search on the internet found a program to recover the data.
I dont use the Garmin training centre software or connect but SportsTrak which is shareware.

Good investment
Pros: Great Value
"Got the Garmin 705 after years-long usage of Cat eye V3; I must say that the Garmin is a completely different level, offering many attractive functions such as GPS navigation, training sessions, power data, elevation data and many more.
Very happy with my move - was worth the investment!

So much data!
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"Our Edge has been a great purchase. I use for everything from cycle touring across Europe, to triathlon training. It's great to see where you've been, and track aspects like ascent vs. heart rate which you couldn't do otherwise.
Quite useful for finding your way, but think you probably need to spend a bit more for the OS maps to get the most out of it.
Would also really like to be able to pre-draw a route and then follow it."

useful but not a must
Pros: Attractive, High Quality
Cons: Expensive
"Edge 705 is so useful when I ride a road bike, an MTB in the mountain and a commuter bike in the town. Now, I cannot ride without Edge.
But I'm not contented with the battery lasting only 12 hours. And the mount is easy to break. Be gentle when you remove / install Edge.

Garmin 705 in teh Real World
Pros: Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"It all great until you get going and realise the base map doesn't include B roads or lanes, the navigation takes you on huge A roads with incorrect turn settings as it doesn't see teh road you're often cycling on. But fear not you can drop another 100 GBP for the detailed base map and then enjoy a world of unbelievably complex authorisation codes, activation codes, registration codes and password account settings to initiate the map software and learn a non intuitive software system to get the damm thing loaded. Bottom line, the Garmin is the only product in this niche market, they know and they're leveraging their domanance to teh max sucking every penny out of you on their terms, if there another, any other tool or system for this job I'd buy it preference. I struggle to see how anyone coudl make the task of a GPS bike computer more complex or costly !!!!"

Good buy
"I have owned the 705 for 10mnths having lost my previous 305 when the bracket snapped. The bracket on this is the same which makes me nervous as I use it exclusively for mountain biking & it takes the knocks, however no probs so far.
Its a good unit with lots if functionality. I did have a problem when the power button packed & I couldn't switch it on, Garmin customer service are superb & repaired unit no probs. I don't know if this is a common problem.
Downloading routes to the unit is easy. I also use and like the Garmin Connect website which is free."

Disappointing considering price
Pros: Attractive, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive, Poor Quality, too many faults with features, training centre does not always work, poor mapping quality, unreliable
"I thought the Garmin 705 was a nice idea with lots of useful features but had far too many things go wrong to make it a worthwhile buy Firstly the mapping was of a poor standard compared to other GPS systems. Second the cadence sensor regularly failed to work. Third the system does not always work with online training centre which is also of a poor standard. Finally the system sometimes crashes so cannot be used at all.
Although I may be unlucky and just bought a dud it is still very disappointing considering the price and hype surrounding this system."

Invaluable training partner
Pros: Adjustable, Good Fit, High Quality, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"The Edge 705 cycle computer that provides extensive and accurate data to make this an invaluable training partner
Garmin's wireless technology means you get heart rate and speed/cadence data with no strings attached. Include a wireless heart rate monitor. Also includes a speed/cadence sensor to monitor your pedalling cadence and wheel speed as you ride. You can even use it to train indoors because the sensor attaches to your rear wheel. When you are down lodging to your computer it is simple and you do not have to be a computer wiz’s kid to under stand it. Dan at Wiggle has summed up the Edge 705 in his review
