SRAM OG1090 10 Speed Cassette

Recommended for use with SRAM's Red groupset. They took the standard cassette and turned it inside out!

Power Dome
Pros: Durable, Attractive, Rugged, High Quality, Lightweight, Good Fit
Cons: Expensive
"I refer to this as the power dome because that's what I've known it as. It is a cone like cassette with the coggs milled out. The contact area is much better than the individual coggs clustered together and it really is light weight! Because the gaps between the coggs are not too deep it makes for easier cleaning. The shifting is fast. While I can afford these cassettes, they'll be the ones I buy."

Looks lovely and is lighter too
Pros: Durable, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, finely engineered
"I am sorry, I am reviewing this, but will not replace the 1070 version on my bike till the Spring.
All I can say is; it is certainly significantly lighter than my more simple version and much lighter than the Shimano Campag equivalents. i believe it is very rigid too as all is milled out of ONE solid block except for the 11 and 12 sprockets. So 8 sprockets in one block. The Red backing looks lovely too.
Working for a design and engineering company, I passed this round our tools department and they were impressed. I know the performace will be good, but to ensure this have got the 1090R hollowchain to go with it. Summary; expensive but light, rigid, and even if you dont use it yet, it makes a good talking piece on your office desk!!

Very high quality product
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"Hard to believe they can manufacture a 10 speed cassette this light and strong. Gear changes are excellent and with no flexing while peddling hard."

Awesome
Pros: Lightweight
Cons: Expensive, Poor Fit
"This is a wicked cassette. It's so light compared to others I have used and contary to popular belief, gear changes seem as easy and fast as with the dura ace set used perviously.
Its a very tight fit on the hub but if applying to a new wheel i doubt this will be an issue. I had to file some burrs off the wheel so that the cassette would go on."

Machining work of art
Pros: Durable, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight
"Onto my 3rd Red Cassette and have matched this with a KMC chain. Trying 2 chains now and swapping them regularly to see how this extends the life of the cassette. Amazing piece of machining, super light, very quick and positive gear changes and not noisy at all with the KMC chain. Red anodised inner plate adds a bit of bling. Although not cheap I can't pull myself away to try the 1070 or DuraAce cassettes."

Excellent product
Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, Good Fit
"I use this with the SRAM Red groupset. Durable and shifts are very precise. However, a little noisier than the Shimano Dura-ace but have got used to the sound. Great price too."

Smooth Shifting and Light
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, smooth shifting
"I recently purchased this cassette for a new set of wheels. I have this cassette already on another wheelset, and they're fantastic. What makes the cassette so good is that I don't notice it. Shifting the rear gears is so smooth it seems unfair to anyone who doesn't have them. The modified shifting cogs work to perfection. What else could you ask for? Oh yeah, how about the fact that the cassette is so light it practically floats in water."

something special
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive, noisy
"This cassette went onto my race wheelset. The wheels get pulled out for special occaisions so I felt the expense of the cassette was balanced out with the idea that it would last a very long time.
The cassette itself looks stunning and the weight is amazingly light. The red graphics on the back of the cassette also show through the wheels from the other side and look really cool too.
As far as performance goes, it is very noisy. The first race I had the cassette I thought my drive train was going to fall off. It did wear in though but still makes noticeably more noise than shimano or campag. SRAM red is easily the best group set going around IMO. I don't however think that the cassette makes a world of difference compared to the force cassette (which is on my training wheels.) I think the shifting speed and precision is fantastic on both cassettes.
All in all, if you don't mind spending the extra money on the RED, you'll get a cassette that makes you feel a bit special and a feeling that you have the "complete" group set with no compromise."

Great gearing range
Pros: Versatile
"I bought this cluster for a pair of fulcrum race zero's that I am using for my "climbing wheels". The gearing range of 11-28 is ideal, can pedal hard down hill and make it up the steeper bits -especially where it is the third or fourth big hill for the day.
Very light, easy to install, compatible with all my other "shimano" bikes for swapping wheels around. I have sram red on the bike this is used on regularly and another 11-25 for the flat on a pair of zipps.

Expensive (very) but good (very)
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"I bought the cassette originally because of the 11-26 range. The shifts are much sharper and quicker than on my old Ultegra cassette. It works seamlessly with the rest of my Shimano setup.
The only downside is that you'd want to get the Red groupset.

disappointed with my 11 to 26 cassette

Pros: Lightweight
Cons: Poor Quality, Wears Out Easily, needs redesign
"initialy I was very impressed with this cassette. it shifted well, it was noticeably not as quiet running as others I've used, but the weight and engineering was impressive.
after about a year of use on my best bike (so not any heavy or winter use, just a good number of hilly road training and sportive miles) I started to find the occasional jumping gear when in the 14 tooth.
I clean this bike after every ride, including proper degrease of the chain and cogs (using fenwicks) so I inspect after the ride and found that one of the teeth was bent over! the tooth was one of the very thin milled teeth that sits just in front of the open glide sections (where the tooth is partialy removed during milling) and I simply bent it back upright and all was ok again.
Then more recently I have noticed that 4 of these very thinly milled teeth have now broken off the cassette.
I've never had broken teeth on cassettes before. be they MTB, cyclo cross or road. having been racing and riding for 25 years.
Thus I think the design of these cassettes is poor.

SRAM 1090 cassette
Posted February 15, 2011
Mr T
5 months on from getting your replacement, how do you now rate the cassette? I am on the verge of getting one, but wonder if I should not be buying the 1070? Questions I have are:
Has the replacement proved more durable?
Some reviewers indicate it is very noisy, do you find this the case?
How much routine maintenance does it require. Like any other cassette or are you taking it off the wheel regularly for deeper clean.
On balance, given its lightness do you recommend it over the 1070? I am no racer, but am looking to climb a some of the bigger French mountains this year.
Feedback appreciated?

Replaced under warranty
Posted September 16, 2010
Just to follow up on this review - I had the cassette sent back to Fisher (UK distributor for SRAM) and they replaced it without fuss or charge.
so although still worried about the design, at least I have a replacement to give it a 2nd go.

If thinking French Alps then BUY THIS!
Pros: Attractive, Durable, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"Hi on September 12th to 19th September this year 09 I rode from Bristol (southwest England) to the French alps and up the Famous Alpe Du' Huez - 800 miles in 8 days for a bristol hospital, along with 2 other riders. I used my Scott Addict R4 (WHAT A BEAUTIFULL MACHINE) as standard my Scott Addict came with a 39/53 by 12-25 I thought this would be a too hard ratio by the time we approached the alps on the last 3 days of the ride (having training on hill repeats around bristol) So i decided to purchase a 34/50 crank and this Sram Red 11-28. And I was not dissapointed, having rode the Alps I can truely say that a gear as easy as a 11-28 was by far the smartest desision you can make!!! I am far from a pro but do consider myself quite fit (ride on average 100 - 150 miles most weeks - Am classed as a Catogory 4 racer, do timetrialing etc...) when we were in the alps I generally made it up most of the mountains with ease (sure it was knackering) but not as bad as if I'd had my 39/53 and 12-25. a friend had a 34/50 11-27 (Dura ace cassette) on his Trek Madone 5.2 and he said it was too hard even this ratio compared to mine (1 tooth difference) but when you are going up mountain climbs at a mere 5 - 7 mph it makes all the difference on your speed and energy levels compared to those who have harder gears!!!! Trust me I have been there and done it and like I said quite a fit healthy 30 something!
THIS IS THE MOST SENSIBLE PURCHASE FOR MOUNTAINS YOU CAN BUY!!!!
My only regret is once I got to the top of one mountian there were many 20-25 mile stretches of VERY FAST down hill sections that because of my 34/50 crank at the front did not allow me to go as fast as i wanted as believe it or not I only managed 50mph going down, had I had my race 39-53 (I'd like to think i might have been able to get nearer 60mph - trust me with those mountains it is possible - word of advice BUY soft compound brake blocks for superior stopping!!!

Worth the wait
Pros: Attractive, Good Fit, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"It took over 30 days to get this product as it was back ordered, even though the estimated ship date was much less. I waited patiently and was very happy when it arrived. Even happier after installing and using it. It shifts crisply and has a nice sound to it when it settles into a gear. The missing cog design seem to quicken the shifts and I can even shift up to a bigger cog under power at the moments I hit a hill and forget to shift. Very light and interesting design. I use it with a Shimano Ultegra rear derailleur and a KMC chain (the light one)."

Table Piece
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"Great looking table piece ,with its beaity and craftmanship,a sure conversation topic,Hopefully one day the chain that was ordered with it will arrive ,and the two will be fitted to my bike and we'll attack some hills.and I'll be on the search for another ,prehaps not so expensive , table piece."
