Avid Elixir R Disc Brakes

Pure, simple performance is what you can expect with the Elixir R. It has TaperBore Technology, tool-free reach adjustment, Power Reserve geometry, Tri-Align Caliper Postioning System, and drip-free bleeding. Elixir answers the braking performance needs of every mountain bike rider whether Cross Country, Trail, All-Mountain, Freeride or Downhill. Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Adjustable
Cons: wish the lever was not as straight.
"Picked this up after I broke my Hayes Nine in a final desperate bid to stop it from dragging.
Installation was a breeze, and set up was accomplished in minutes. Fit was great on my 20" frame. I have ridden only a couple of times but it has shown great modulation and loads of stopping power. Regret I didn't pick up the front brake as well.
I I ride a 2005 Kona Dawg and am a bigger rider, 6'3", 190lbs so product weight is rarely much of a consideration beyond making sure it is lighter than what I am replacing. My primary focus is parts that will last and not cost me an arm and a leg. This looks like a product I will enjoy for a long time.

Pros: High Quality
"I was surprised how easy they were to fit.
The instructions say you need to apply the new brakes about 40 times before they have bedded in, but in fact they seemed perfect from appilcation no.1.

Best Hyrdo Brakes Around
Pros: Durable, Attractive, Comfortable, Rugged, High Quality, Adjustable
"Purchased these after my old-faithful Hayes 9's started to play up on me...
Went for the middle sized rotor option for a bit more braking power.
These are easily the best hyrdos I've ever ridden.
Effortless effective braking, no random plugs to pop out like on the Hayes and they look the business too.
Also has all the adjustments you could ever ask for so you'll never have drag issues.
Brake fade is non-existent.
Sometimes I over-brake on big descents just because I can now :p

Ride forever, with the Elixir
Pros: Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Lightweight
"I have run good quality hydraulic disc brakes on two previous bikes, but the Avid Elixirs on my new mountain bike have outperformed their predecessors in every respect. Power is strong, with no signs of fading on long descents, but the real differentiator is the modulation and control, that results from the taperbore technology and the design of the valve ports. The levers are ergonomically designed, to enable genuine one finger braking with confidence, on any gradient or surface. the package would have been rounded off nicely, if there had been a bite adjustment feature, but, in fairness, the pads are spring loaded, and have never shown any sign of binding on the disc, even when heated, under heavy braking on long, fast downhill sections. A 180mm rotor is recommended up front for maximum confidence. The pads have longevity, when resisting gravity, and I feel that I could ride forever, now that I have found the Elixir."

Pros: Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, Good Fit
"I’m upgrading parts on my 2004 Epic comp. It had an early set of Shimano Deore hydraulic disk brakes which looked dated and chunky. They worked really well so I did feel guilty about replacing them with brand new Avid Elixir R’s just for the sake of pimping my ride. But not now.. These brakes are awesome. Huge improvement on my old 2004 deores. Much more powerful and very responsive.
Each break leaver is identical so the ready assembled units can be swapped from side to side to fit US or UK style, without having to re plumb the hydraulic cables. Although the front brake cable will need shortening at some poit.
I didn’t have a torque wrench handy to fit the new Disk Rotors but tightened them all to the same level as my old rotors by hand and used lock tight on them too. There’s lots of debate on the web forums over the “do you really need a torque wrench to do this?” issue. Well its my risk.
Very happy with them, they look and feel great."

Elix R brakes
Pros: Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Adjustable
"I recently bought elixrs to replace aging Hayes Soles. Honestly, the difference is like night and day. They are relatively easy to set up, they look sweet and they work quite well. Also, the reach adjustment is nice and simple. The hydraulic hoses are made with a fairly stiff plastic that feels a bit cheap, but I'm guessing this won't really be an issue. Be forewarned that in the initial stages they are a bit loud, but I'm hoping that they will quiet down when the pads and rotors are worn in.
I haven't yet had to bleed them (which I've heard is a pain), but it can't be worse than the Hayes. I'll have to see how they stand up to the test of time.

Superb brakes
Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality, powerful
"These are the best all-round brakes that I have used to date.
Power is excellent, even with 160mm rotors. Plenty for XC use.
Modulation is just how I like it, easy to feather but not hard to get all the power.
They are easy to setup and are proving very reliable. Great lever shape and easy to adjust the reach.
Pad life is very good as they come with the sintered pads.

great brakes with a squeak
"These breaks were excellent value. Good breaking ability with one finger. They do tend to squek a fair bit which doesn't overly worry me."
