Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile, accurate, clearly read screen, full of features
Cons: Expensive
"The Edge 705 is a feature packed package for the rider seeking to improve performance and collect useful data. Even though I am long retired from competitive sport (59 next month) I still am very competitive and like to perform well. I particulalry like the dual screens with up to 8 pieces of data per screen and I use all the data in my rides and analyse results afterwards. I am finding the cadence data is improving my performance considerably. I have always tended to push big years at a slower cadence (speedskaters have a low cadence, with powerful pushes and that was my sport for 40 years), I am now spinning at about 85 rpm, thanks to cadence data feedback and my average speed has increased (on runs I have been doing for years) by over 1mph, to my delight! The unit very quickly finds the satellites and locates position with accuracy. The altimeter is a little slow in settling down, though records data accurately if turned on for a few minutes ahead of the ride. I am particularly please with all European maps / data that is included and the features such as: time to destination, distance to destination, training features, find places, etc. The heart monitor measures with accuracy and positioning is not critical on the chest.
I do think the unit is rather too expensive (I realise there is lot of R&D cost but the unit is mass produced and will cost a fraction of the retail price to make - I know, I was in consumer electronics for many years!) Overall a great trainig device and piece of kit. I do hope Garmin have overcome the problems of the earlier Edge units (205, etc) going off with intermittent connections on bumpy roads.

A whole new level of Training
Pros: Attractive, Durable, High Quality
"Great device simple to use. This device has helped me get more out of my training, my Garmin connect is a really good sit for storing and analysing your ride. I found the Virtual Partner useful allowing me to race against my previous PB. The mounts are easy to fit an sturdy. I was a bit worried about the usb port cover but after many wet rides no issues to day.
Is also does british grid to help with getting your location on a map."

Good gps package
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Comfortable, Good Fit, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"I wanted a gps computer that I could upload ride information into memory map. I got the Garmin Edge 705 connected to my bike and working within half an hour of opening the box. Using it is very simple and uploading ride info into the computer is a doddle. Reviewing a ride in memory map is excellent. You can compare heart rate with cadence and elevation at any point on your ride. Uploading to Garmin Training Centre means you can track your fitness improvement and share good rides. My Garmin came with Garmin City navigator map on micro sd card. The map detail is very limited so I am now looking to buy Garmin UK topo for more OS type detail. This is my only criticism of what is otherwise an excellent product. I have now got it set up on my mountain and road bike and am looking forward to using the Virtual Partner and Workout menus. Screen display is excellent as is ease of navigating the menus."

Sophisticated bike computer
Pros: High Quality, Rugged, Versatile, too many features
Cons: Expensive, Limited Color Choices
"They don't come more sophisticated than this, and as a result it takes ages to learn what the Edge is capable of. I have had it three weeks, and I am only scratching the surface.
The manuals are useful only for helping get the unit out of the box and onto the bike. The final instruction - "go for a ride" is where the fun starts.
But be warned, trying to learn to use all the functions while cycling is risky at best. The CD manual lists all the functions but unless you have the CD and the Edge in the same place it is hard to get to use all the advice and when you are on the bike it is impossible.
It is best to have the thing moving, my most interesting set up session was on a train, where armed with a lap top with the manual, the Edge and a two hour journey I was able to fully get to grips with all the functions. I even recorded a maximum speed of 128 mph!
The base map is poor for cycling, only having major roads, most of which the cyclist would want to avoid!
It is possible to buy more maps, I haven't done that yet, having spent a fortune on this I don't plan to spend more on it just yet, a shame it doesn't have a better base map for that kind of money.
The bar fittings haven't let the unit fall off so they do the job, but it does bounce around at speed.
However there are only two fittings, and the cable ties are not reusable.
The solution if you want to move this from bike to bike is to buy more bar fittings at an outrageous £6.99 (for a piece of plastic that must cost a fraction of a penny to produce).
Or a pack of reusable cable ties.
It clearly has bags of potential but a few niggle too"

Garmin Edge 705 Road Performance Team Edition
Pros: Attractive, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"After using my Garmin 305 for the last 2 years, i decided it was time to upgrade to big brother the 705. I had to wait for the Tour de France to come around again as i wanted the Ltd edition team colours ( it goes with my bike).
Out of the box it was nice to see, 2 handle bar mounts and plenty of cable ties to get your self up and running, mains charger and cadence sensor.
I was surprised by how much bigger the 705 is overall, the screen is much larger compared with the 305 and as such much easier to read while hurtling down single track at mach 10.
Instructions are a little on the poor side for a novice Garmin user it might be irritating to have to use the CD rom i much prefered the old paper booklets
Software, Garmin Connect, Mapsource and Training Centre all work extremely well with the 705 and even for the PC illiterate won't take long to get to grips with.
As a previous Garmin user, i found the 705 easy to set up and get to grips with. Heart rate zones and personnel settings were all set up in a matter of minutes.
The joystick is easy to use even with gloves on as are the zoom buttons located on the side of the unit.
Being able to have 16 sets of data fields shown over 2 screens is great, you can have just what you need and they are easy to adjust if you want to add something else while out on a ride.
City Navigator was included in my bundle, which would be great for Road use, but as a avid MTB'r i switched to Garmin's Topo GB, using mapsource and with the addition of a 2 gig micro sd card it was pretty straight forward to send full maps and routes across to the 705.
The base map the unit comes with is poor so you really do need to purchase City Navigator or Topo GB depending on your need.
I also up loaded routes from my previous rides to use as training runs using the virtual partner as its something i'd never used on my 305, and i have to say it's a really useful tool when out riding on your own and great fun.
The other function that i thought was magic was being able to look for place's IE: great british pub after that hard ride, type in the details and the unit will direct you to your nearest pint... as you get near a change of direction the unit will beep to warn you and tell you where to go next.
I've found over the last few weeks that GPS coverage is much better, and i as of yet have not lost signal reception even in the dark forests of Wales.
Battery life has been improved a little and i've managed to go between 13-15 hours before having to recharge... still not enough for those really long epic 24hr races
My gripes would be that the mapping software Doesn't do the unit justice, if your using Topo GB there is a distinct lack of info compared to a OS map, so i would say always carry a OS map and compass as back up.
User guide poor for the novice, Battery life ok but addition of a external supply would be a great boost.
My gripes i think are minimal as this is a serious unit with a host of features.
Overall a bloomin fantastic unit for those serious about their riding and wanting to keep track and measure their progress."

Not quite the full monty
Pros: Adjustable, High Quality, Versatile, trick
Cons: Expensive, no way to plan your route
"Wiggles price and delivery were, as always, great.
The Edge 705 has great potential but Garmin have done their usual and held back in the most bizare way?
The topo maps, which I avoided, are targeted at mtb but have no bridleways due to a GBOS licencing issue, this renders them largely useless, try opencyclemap instead.
The road maps that came with my unit were on SD card (same price £85 on SD, download or DVD). But you only get mapsource software from Garmin if you get the roadmaps on DVD. This is perverse since it is the only way of pre-plotting routes before your ride for upload to the Edge, as most of us would do. In essence, Garmin condem you to only ride 'courses' that you have ridden before and hence recorded on the GPS unit.
Garmin, your hardware is bombproof, your software is good, please look at your business model and allow access to an on and off road route plotter for those of us who cant get the DVD version of the maps.
Please.

good purchase
Pros: Attractive, Good Fit, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: difficult to read screen in certain conditions
"I have found this product very useful, it is easy to get started and is easy to learn how to use, also had no problems fitting to the bike. The only problem I have found with it so far is that the map screen is really difficult to see if you have the sun in your eyes and on really dull days. I have used it in heavy rain with no problems."

Lost, but not for long
Pros: Attractive, Great Value, Versatile
Cons: Expensive, Limited Color Choices
"I was really disapointed with the Garmin 705, well, at least untill I recieved it at home and finally got on the road to start it up. It´s satalite detection is as good as they brag, cloady , indoors, trees... the works, it puts you on the map in quite a jiffy. Even works great in the car, so it´s a good all-in-one. Now for the teaser, imagine after a good sweaty ride, the curiosity of wanting to know how you did on the hill or how your HR was at that point of elivation, the 705 will give you all that and much more.
No wonder the pros use it, it's easy, quick and lots of fun , totally configurable and very user frendly.
Try it out and for sure you will be putting away your other HR and cadence meters.
Enjoy, you won't regret it

A cycle computer superior in cost performance
Pros: High Quality
"I thought whether I am big for a computer for a cycle, but am not interested.
On the contrary, indication is big and is easy to read while I run.
I think that I am better than the cycle computer which I packed with various functions in a mass compactly.
In addition, the reaction of the radio is good, too,
I am perfect to use the function of the navigation for cycling.
It is a difficult point to be expensive, but thinks whether I am enough for cost performance.

Double the distance
Cons: Expensive, poor gps ability, not waterproof
"I found that although the device has detailed maps and gives the user choices of pedestrian, cyclist or car user, it managed to select totally inappropriate routes.
I bought the device with a view to use it as a navigation device, but when selecting routes from Cambridge to Ipswich or Cambridge to Norwich (between 55 and 60 miles) it would select routes that ended up being 95 to 105 miles in length. It avoided certain A roads and B roads and made the proposed journey twice as long as it needed to be.
I wouldn't have had any confidence in the "Get Me Home" function.
I've been advised (after purchasing) that the device is not waterproof. I would consider this to be a vital element for a device advertised to be used on a pedal cycle.
The device is stylish enough, although I think that I can find a GPS device that is both accurate and waterproof for less than the £350 RRP.
I didn't get to use it on the bike (I never got that far) and most of the kit stayed in the plastic bags prior to return.
It just didn't deliver on the GPS function."

Best GPS out there
Pros: Attractive, Durable, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: Expensive, difficult to get head round at first
"I would recommend this device to anyone who can afford one, as it does everything you would need from probable 4 different pieces of equipment. No more maps to carry, not extra HR Monitor watch, no extra bike computer.
Once you have got your head around how to put routes on it works like a dream for navigating.

Pricey, but worth it
Pros: Attractive, Comfortable, Durable, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged
Cons: Expensive
"I really like this device. The GPS function is fantastic and along with pre-loaded routes lets me explore new areas without fear of getting lost! The computer functions are also excellent, though I suspect that the calorie calculation is a bit generous. Overall, an expensive but really useful piece of equipment.
On the downside, the web site is pretty hopeless and you need to use third party software like bikeroutetoaster and mapmyride to realy get the most out of the device"

VERY DISSAPOINTING
Cons: Expensive, unreliable, not water proof
"I have been using the 705 for almost 2 years now and about to give up on it. I use it only as a training tool for road riding and was attracted to its ANT + capabilities and programable displays while riding. I don`t use the GPS functions at all.
Problem 1 - accurately recording heart rate - I had all sorts of problems with the unit reading the speed sensor or something else at the start of rides - even when the HR monitor belt was paired with the unit. I eventually solved this by using gel on my HR belt but I still occasionally get 150% of my max heart rate when coasting down hills as speed - this stuffs up my data for a training session and is annoying.
Problem 2 (and the deal breaker in my mind) It can:t be used in the rain - ride with it in the rain and all screwing things start happening, moisture in the display, turns off, battery charging and use properties, usb port connection problems - all continue or get worse until the whole unit stops working. Unfortunately mine didn`t die until a few months after warranty ran out, replacement unit was discounted by garmin but still expensive and I still have to make a call of having no data when training in the wet or destroying an expensive piece of equipment over time.
Problem 3 - can:t get the 705 to see my cycleops power tap hub. Despite hours of trying, literally weeks of research on the web to discover all the necessary quirks to enable to 705 to see a power hub I can`t get mine to register - either on my initial unit or the replacement one. Yes I have tested the powerhub and it is transmitting
So I have decided to give up on it - pity as it is such a great concept - programmable display and records/displays just about everything. If they came out with a version with no GPS, works in the wet , and reliable data reading it would be perfect."

Garmin 705
Pros: Lightweight
Cons: Expensive, too difficult to use
"Too expensive for what is a very old fashioned user interface. If your an i touch or i phone user.... you will see this is like old fashioned DOS vs windows.
though it does some of the basics well .. the instructions are near useless and the navigation/mapping is impossible to figure out.. i have had this for a number of weeks and still have not been able to figure out mapping functionality....after spending a whole day of my weekend trying to figure it out."
