Personailesd Indoor Training at Home
Pros: Adjustable, Great Value, personailsed
Cons: none
"I had been using Spinervals DVD's for about 2 months when I decided to give these CTS Progressive Power DVD's a try.
The first thing I noticed when starting off is that Chris Carmichael (CTS) is much more detail than Troy Jacobson (Spinervals). With Spinervals, you put the DVD on and then do what Coach Troy tells you. The intensity levels he suggests (gear and cadence combinations) are quite overstated unless you are a seriously competitive athlete, however by using lower gears and perceived effort levels you can get a decent workout right out of the box.
By comparison, if you do a little bit of preparation, Chris Carmichael gives you a tailored workout to your current abilities.
The Progressive Power set of 5 DVD's is actually an 8 week program of 2 workouts a week. The first workout is called Field Test and it enables you to establish your current abilities and then work out 5 different training intensities (Endurance Miles, Tempo, Steady State, Climbing Repeat and Power Interval) for the following 15 workouts (3 per DVD).
Carmichael and his assistants use Power Wattage as well as Heart Rate, for these intensities. I decided to refer to both of these in my training – so needed to be able to calculate watts from my speed on my indoor trainer. I found a useful formula for MPH to Watts at http://www.kurtkinetic.com/calibration_chart.php which allowed me to use my normal bike computer on the back wheel and convert this to watts. This webpage also allows users of other indoor trainers (eg Blackburn Fluid, CycleOps Fluid 2, Elite Fluid, as well as Kurt Kinetic) to work out power.
Carmichael has been US Olympic Cycling coach as well as Lance Armstrong's coach and his attention to detail comes out in the sessions he takes as well as those lead by his assistants. He drills into you to focus on ONE thing only when fatigue sets in (think about pedalling technique) so as to not lose form, or allow negatives to creep in. He constantly reminds you to ride in the drops when going hard - to practice this so that it will seem natural and you get the benefit of the lower wind resistance when on the road. He reminds you of hydration and nutrition during workouts and recovery and warmdown and not getting cold afterwards. He reminds you about eating before and after the workouts. I live in Australia and even on beautiful sunny days, I initially found myself wanting to ride indoors because I was learning so much from these DVD's!
The CTS DVD's are a similar price to the Spinervals ones, however with 3 workouts to each DVD, they provide excellent value in comparison. Coming from Australia with a strong dollar and weak pound, I could buy these DVD's from Wiggle for significantly less than their price in Melbourne. (I guess this will continue until Australian distributors respond).
Overall – a very happy user, and getting progressively stronger."

CTS Progressive Power Workout Training 5 DVD Disc
Pros: Durable, Great Value, High Quality
"Unfortunately I didnt get these in time for the Aberdeen winter, however I use them offshore on the stationary bike and while they dont look like much on the first view, the workouts are great, easy to use and I am now mid way through the second disc of workouts I feel confident of increasing my power by the 12% it claims on the box! A must have!"

Very good but pricey
"These CTS DVD' are excellent for training, but a little expensive to buy. I would prefer some of the workouts to be longer,. They are all only an hour including warm up and cool down."
