Surly Pacer Frameset 2011

All day Steel Roadie frame. Conservative geometry, comfortable steel ride, with adequate 'out of the saddle' lateral stiffness for those sprints home.

I really like this frame
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Rugged
"I bought this to use up a collection of parts left over from other projects. Kitted out with Tiagra and FSA equipment it is a surprisingly comfortable bike and nothing like as heavy as I expected. I was going to give it away as a present but I'm going to keep it.
The construction is excellent and the paintwork is good too. It takes mudguards. I fitted a Tubus rack and used the hole in the rack to locate the mudguard stays, so you can fit a rack and mudguards to make a good light tourer."

Down to earth frame
Pros: Comfortable
"Don't overlook this frame despite the fact it doesn't conform to the latest fashions in bike frames. There is no doubt this frame and fork is a little heavier the various carbon offerings... about 3lbs overall... but remember that most of the weight of a bike is what you attach to the frame, not the frame itself. Then there's the rider..who may be carrying an extra 3lbs or more! This frame built up into a bike very smoothly with seat tube, headset and bottom bracket all accurately sized. The positioning fo the top tube cable stops is a little odd being right on top of the top tube rather than under the top tube. I used Shimano shallow drop brake callipers (39-49mm) which just reach the rims allowing maximum tyre clearance. The ride of this frames is stunning. It has impecible manners and inspires real confidence even over rough road surfaces. You can buy this frame with confidence... perhaps the skinny tubes even offer an aero advantage?"

Feel the steel
Pros: Great Value, High Quality, Rugged
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"Lovely frame, arrived in perfect condition and quickly. Beautiful geometry. The british racing green is the only available colour, but it's a lovely hue."

Happy in Every Way
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Rugged, Versatile, steel what's not to like about it (exept the hill
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"Box arrived at my house (In Japan) in excellent shape. Actually, the Frame was in a box, neatly and safely inside a larger standard bike box.
After building up the frame in an evening with new Shimano 105 parts I was very pleased with the way it looked dressed out in all black components.
My first ride on this bike, and I am not exagerating, was smiles from ear to ear. The handling is percise and smooth with no unpredictable behavior. I've had it on a decent at over 60KPH now and as far as the frame and fork goes it inspired confidence. This is something that my high end Carbon frame seems to feel just a bit twitchy on. Bring this frame up to speed and you will swear you have a tailwind because this bike just loves to hold cruising speed.
I have now put on about 300 Miles on this ride and I am impressed in every regard. Will I choose it for my races when the season opens? Nope.. But, all my training and fun riding, except hill work, will be done on this bike. It's only when the road turns upward more then 3 or 4 degrees that it begins to feel the weight of the steel frame.
Sizing for me was spot on and in line with my other bike.. .No mystery dimensions or suprises."

Pros: Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, Rugged, High Quality, Versatile
"I looked long and hard at various options including certain Italian steel frames, and also considered a custom frameset. I wanted a steel frame for my fast commute and local rides which looked good, but not something too flashy. It also had to fit 25 c tyres without trouble, as well as guards for winter commuting. The Pacer frame has all that and more, and at an absolute ripper price. It has classic good steel looks, with classic geometry and pure road bike handling. It has eyelets for mudguards, if needed, and room to fit fatter tyres no problem. I run 25 c and these are fine. It has a fuss free steel is real ride with no vices. Don't expect it to be as snappy as the latest crop of top end carbon frames. Don't expect it to be as light either. I have built mine with Ultegra 6700 and some 105 5700. 3T bars & stem. It looks fantastic, and weight is respectable. Be warned - my Ultegra 6700 standard (short reach) brakes just reach the rims, due to the extra clearance under the arches. Overall this is highly recommended (apparently the stickers can be removed if wanted - haven't tried yet)."

Best value, everyday frame-set
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, Rugged, Versatile, Good Fit
"Several months ago I took ( what seemed at the time) a fairly big
risk and ordered a Surly-Steamroller frame-set
to build my first steel frame bike.
I was so pleased with it's quiet, comfortable riding quality that within a couple of months I had ordered it's multi-speed stable-mate the Pacer-
( I stripped my 2 year old Aluminium road-bike for parts)
The result is everything I had hoped for- A fast ,quiet ,comfortable, good looking bike that didn't cost the earth.
For the full frame stats , a visit to the Surly website is well worth the time.
This is not a full on race frame, and sure , there are better quality , High-end ,lugged exotic frames around if money is no object, but if your looking for the best value, everyday general-purpose frame-set around I reckon this is it !
About the only small criticism I can make is , I wish the decals had been clear coated, as they are on the Steamroller-
Otherwise Excellent value for money Go for it!

Very Pleased
Pros: Attractive, Comfortable, Durable, Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, smooth!
"I ummed and aahed about which steel road frame to buy for ages, looking at the three obvious tarmac Surly's as well as the Salsa Casserol and the Viner Passo. I even looked at getting a Bob Jackson but as this was my first build I thought why waste such a beautiful lugged steel frame on my inexperience?
In the end I plumped for the Pacer, as I wanted to be able to fit callipers and was satisfied with the price. I didn't buy it from Wiggle as these frames were almost impossible to come by in 2009, but they did have the best price so I would have done if stock were available.
The bike is now complete, with a mix of Tiagra, Dura Ace & SLX and some fairly standard Bonty, Tektro and BBB bits. Not too bad and I had the wheels built up on Tiagra hubs which seem nice and smooth. But to focus on them is to overlook the main reason why the bike glides over tarmac and wills you to keep pushing on. The frame is so smooth it is unbelievable. I ride a (new-ish) steel fixie and am surprised by the amount of damping in the Surly frame whilst retaining a good mix of low weight and responsiveness. The first time I took it out I couldn't stop grinning as I was amazed that I had assembled something so good, but the frame clearly flatters my skills as a bike mechanic!
I have bought and sold aluminium and composite bikes in the past but steel is my preferred material (outside carbon, but I am a real-world cyclist using bikes for group rides as well as pub rides). Friends of mine who are not fans of steel would no doubt say it felt soft, but if steel is what you want and you appreciate the benefits of it (I am 6'4" and over 200lbs) this is a great frame which I hope to keep for a long time.
I would also add that there are braze-ons on the fork and for a rear rack OR mudguards, not both. However, if you buy any (I think) Tubus rack then these handily provide a further fixing point for mudguards after the rack is in place on the frame. Just a thought."

Traditional and comfy
Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Good Fit, High Quality, Rugged
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"I've had a bike based on this frame for about nine months and done about 3000 miles on it. It feels fast and fairly stiff while also being very comfortable - small holes in road surfaces are absorbed nicely. The welds are all smooth and neat and overall the frame looks good.
About the only problem is that there's no braze ons for a rear rack. Apart from that it's a great frame."
