Cracking Gadget
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, feature packed
Cons: Expensive, Limited Color Choices
"I knew this would be a great piece of kit but was unsure whether to invest nearly £200 on it. Since doing so I regret not investing in it last summer.
It comes packed with features and is very intuitive - which means the need to refer to the user manual is limited.
One of the best features of all Garmin products is the ability to analyse your workouts on the Garmin Connect site. As I also own a Garmin 50 this means all my workouts, either running, cycling or x-training in the gym are in one place. The HRM of the Forerunner is also compatible with the Edge.
The beauty of the Edge is it is also small enough to put in the larger key pockets of some running shorts for when you do go running. As the audible alarm can be set for every mile you can use it to help your running training.
Worth the price tag.

Best cycle computer ever
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, smaller than the average garmin
Cons: Expensive
"This is a treat. Accuracy matches my Polar for distance/HR etc. but oh so much more data for the data freak in me! Elevation, gradient, temperature, time alerts, distance alerts, lap times, training zones, courses, workouts, favourite climbs - the list goes on. Despite this, it only took 10 minutes to set up initially and 2 or three rides to decide on the data fields, alerts etc. I wanted to use. After a ride, it's brilliant. All your training data shown on Garmin.Connect and, get this, even photos of places of interest via some mapping data that plots your route and even let's your wife and kids have a nose down to street/house level as to just where you have been. This is seriously good. I can now go out training and find places to go with the family afterwards! Anyone know Turville in Berkshire? Great 1 mile plus hill climb at 10% average (85%+ MHR all the way for me) and also were they filmed the Vicar of Dibley and the windmill in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Great riding, great downloading and now a happy family coming to see where daddy rides and cars really do fly.
BUY ONE"

My Best Computer
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile
"I decided to take the plunge with the Garmin after my previous computer failed to make it through the tough winter. My Edge 500 is a very impressive product. The amount of information available is astonishing and I particularly like the Virtual Partner function: this is where you race against yourself over a course, although keeping ahead of the relentless 'blob' as it chases you along the map is a real challenge. Being able to download details of your rides to the Garmin site is brilliant and it will really help me with my training. It's a simple to use device and not having to worry about wires and sensors is a real boon. There's also something a bit surreal about being tracked by satellites! You might swallow hard at the price tag but I think it's worth the money because, if it lasts, you won't need to buy another computer ever again. Criticisms? I think Garmin should include a written owner's manual in the box rather than you having to download and print it."

Great kit
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Comfortable, Durable, Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile
Cons: garmin-sort your website out!
"I have a forerunner 50, but find it is not so user friendly on the bike, especially when it is cold and you need long finger gloves, like this winter in the uk!
the edge is about the same size other computers but has a host of features-and the buttons are easy to press. the custom screens are a great feature- you can display one feature on one screen, and one click gives you 5 features on the next screen-so in the dark you can focus on one item if you need to without the back light.
The Edge is compatible with the HRM and cadence/speed sensor from the forerunner, so you just stick it on your bike and go. in the mean time you can have the foreunner on your wrist if you are running or swimming as part of a session.
when you plug in to garmin connect-which is a little bit confusing- hey presto your route on google maps! along with a host of data from elevation gain/loss cadence etc

Brilliant GPS Cycle Computer
Pros: Attractive, Durable, High Quality, Lightweight, Rugged
Cons: Expensive
"This GPS cycle computer is superb. I love the way you can download your route to a PC and view it with Google Maps or Google Earth. All the ride info is there and you can play it back in a media player. The unit display can be customised to your liking with loads of different options and you can switch between 3 pages - so no shortage of info at hand. I also like the way you can send rides back to the Edge and race yourself (you could race other riders courses by downloading their rides from Garmin Connect).
The size is perfect: big enough to read on the bike, but small enough to fit neatly on the stem. Easy to fit and remove. Secure once on the bike.
This is my second Edge 500. The first kept freezing up after connecting it to the PC. I got the new one, updated the software and have had no problems. Brilliant!"

Best Bike Computer
Pros: Attractive, High Quality
"I totally love my Garmin Edge 500, it's so much better than the Polar CS400 I had. I love the extra functionality and that you can see all the information you need on one screen. Plus as a smaller rider the computer fits perfectly on my small stem."

High Tech
Pros: Durable, Attractive, High Quality
Cons: Expensive, Limited Color Choices
"I think if your spending this much on a cyclocomputer you already know what to expect from this.
Great functionality on and off the bike.
Not too sure of Garmin software (a bit glitchy) but lots of better (and free) software available on line.
A quick internet search of "Sport" and "Tracks" should suffice."

Excellent Puchase
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Comfortable, High Quality, Lightweight
"Garmin 500 is a superb addition for any keen cyclist, provides all sorts of data and screen is easily viewed.
Set-up is simple and settings are easily navigated.
Battery life has improved significantly, which was a criticism of previous models.

Disappointed
Pros: Adjustable, loads of features
Cons: Expensive, inaccurate
"Allow me to present a dissenting opinion.
I brought this not for the training features but to get accurate readings of speed, distance, altitude, gradient and temperature over a range of bikes with different tire/wheel sizes, without needing to attach a sensor to the forks and measure/change wheel circumferences.
GPS promised to do all this for me. I finally brought it after umming and arring because of the price. I loved it before I brought it, and was determined to love it even after I started not trusting it. But now I'm just disappointed.
It starts losing its way under the slightest tree cover.
It needs to be manually started at the beginning of a ride like the cycle computers of yesteryear, so you might look down partway through your ride and see: Movement Detected. Press the Start key to start the timer. Press any other key to ignore.
But then it keeps on taking readings when you take it off the bike for a latte stop unless you press Stop.
Even the temperature reading is +2-4 degrees out, apparently due to the thermostat being near a heat generating component.
The size is manageable but again clunky comes to mind rather than sleek or elegant.
I found the screen difficult to read but brightness can be adjusted up at the cost of battery life, which is good for 1.5 decent rides before needing to be recharged.
The beeping when it does anything is incessant but can be turned off.
What do I like about it?
The form-fitting mounting bracket (2 sets included) for handlebar, stem or frame and plenty of spare bands of 2 sizes, and the secure half clockwise turn to lock the unit into place.
Being able to cram as much or as little data as you want onto 3 screen pages.
So I'm now learning to love my old NiteRider 5.0, which is accurate, all over again, and I use the Edge 500 to set wheel circumference.
In conclusion, good for roadies/triathletes and open road commuters who use the heart rate monitor & training features, but not for off-road, off-the-beaten-track, touring types who are more interested in getting accurate readings on the road."

Fantastic
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile, easy to use & download
"This is a fantastic product. We've used it cycling and walking and can't wait to try it paddling and running. It gives us easy to read information on distance, time, speed and splits, as well as an accurate map of where we've been. Easy to mount on the bike. Can be carried in a backpack and still get accurate readings from the satellite. High quality as always from Garmin."

It really works
Pros: High Quality, Adjustable, Versatile, no calibration needed, lots of information, accurate distance, excellent for training
Cons: battery is not replaceable
"This computer works without calibration or a wheel sensor. This lets me swap it between bikes without any problem at all. It comes with two mounts which are easy to fit and can be moved between bikes too.
My tests against an old Cateye wireless indicate that the accuracy is at least as good as that for distance. The catch is that there is always a lag of about 2 seconds, so speed is always behind.
The screens are totally configurable so they now indicate what I want. The default set up didn't suit me.
I don't train on my bike, just ride around.but the software downloadable from Garmin is easy to use and lets me switch between metric and imperial easily for my records. There are lots of training settings if you get yourself the HRM and cadence sensor.
Experimenting with the altimeter is fun, I really like the gradient indication, the 2 second lag applies though.
Finally this is cheaper because I don;t need a different computer for each bike. The only minus is that it uses a rechargable battery which could be a problem when touring; I have a solar charger so hopefully that will resolve the problem."

Convenient Little Tool
Pros: compact, lot of features, limitless possibilities, good value
Cons: Limited Color Choices, small display
"I already own an Edge 705, but needed something more compact & lighter. For racing, I was still using a Polar model. Polar manufactures very descent cycling computers, but it means that I need to use 2 different applications to collect, analyze and log my data.
The Edge 500 is indeed sleek and compact. A lot of cycling parameters are available and 3 screens can be customized to your needs and preferences. Each screen can display up to 8 parameters, but it is simply too small to have a clear view while under motion. I prefer to use only 3 parameters per screen while racing to get an instant view at a glance.
Because I already have experience with other Garmin cycling computers, the first handling was not complicate. It has lesser functions than a full GPS unit so it is easier to operate. But I believe that a novice would still need few hours to master it.
The route can be drawn on your computer before the ride and uploaded to the unit. It is not a GPS unit, but it can still give you some indications if you deviate from your predetermined route. It can also give you a gross indication of where your normal route is compared to your actual position. You can view the exact route used during your ride afterward on your computer. I personally find it very convenient. If the potential of the unit is considered, the price is very fair.
Post-ride analysis of the heart rate data and other parameters on the computer is not as good as Polar ProTrainer. The Garmin Training Center software is a nightmare; Garmin Connect is much better and is accessible from anywhere with an internet connection. Garmin has a lot of improvement to make on this aspect.
Even if I updated the firmware as soon as I received it, the unit still crashes time to time, especially when riding to the start of a programmed route. I had to search on the internet how to reset the unit because the instructions manual is rather basic.
The mounting system is great and very easy to install. Plenty of elastomer elastics are supplied in the kit. The battery life is more than sufficient for my usage.
I already own the Garmin hearth rate and speed/cadence sensors so I didn’t need to order the complete package. BTW, the premium soft-strap hearth rate sensor is sold separately, but is really worth the extra money. I strongly recommend it."

"It is my first Garmin bike computer, i think it is value for money.
I find it useful for long rides, it provide sufficient information for the rider and has help me to paste my self more efficiently.
Data is accurate and the light is useful during dark condition. Also light, portable and easy fit.
I heard a lot negative feedback about the battery life. But to be honest, no one is going to be riding three days straight.
Beside, is not that hard to charge it. It is using the same USB port as some of the smart phone.
Overall, it is convenient and easy to use device. You'll love it.
Awesome bike computer."

Overall great, with only a couple of tweeks needed
Pros: Great Value, Attractive, Rugged, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Not Enough Features
"Data analysis on the "Garmin Connect" online site is excellent. Two minor things on the downside...the "Garmin Training Centre" will not run on my Mac, and the Edge is only good for 3 bikes. Well I have 3 bikes, and my lady has another, and I would like to use it when I run as well. Have already tried it and it works well in my back pocket.....that's 5 "bikes" I need!!!"

Awesome product
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Rugged, Lightweight
"I've previously messed about with devices that work from magnets on spokes and wires, requiring endless replacement batteries and constant readjustment of the magnets. Not so with this beauty! Clip in, turn to lock and fire her up! A few seconds of locating a satellite and away you go.
A bit disconcerting to find that the elevation showed I was 65m below sea level, despite being on top of a great big hill, but that doesn't stop it from being the best device I have bought.
Particular like the ability to upload and analyse route data!
Well worth the money!"
