"You charge it up. You set it up. You fit it to your bike and it simply works! This is a brilliant piece of kit that provides more data than most people could ever need. As with other Garmin products, this is a high quality GPS, Heart Rate & Cadence monitor. Look no further!"

Feel Like a Pro
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"I saved up all my pennies and even sold a useless 21st present from my parents (antique grammophone!) to buy this little baby: the Garmin GPS500 with cadence. My mate had raved about it a month before and I have not regretted the purchase for a second. In one little computer I have all the tech gear I need - that's saying a lot as the bike bug is hard to satisfy. You can not only measure the usual bike computer info, but altitude, rate of ascent/descent, gradient percentage, temp, change in temp, and about a million other things incl full heart rate, all of which can be downloaded to the PC and analysed. I am now viewing my stats and percentages, looking at change over time and really seeing my fitness levels and achievements in something concrete and measureable. This sort of dream used to be only for the paid professionals. Now I can look at Le Tour and nod in equality at the computers I see on the screen. Thank you Wiggle - best price around."

Not Happy
Posted September 6, 2010
I have found the Garmin Edge 500 not to live up to the expectations I had for it. For a start, the manual instructions are lacking detail in crucial areas. Trying to set up bike 2 and 3: there doesn't seem to be anywhere that wheel size can be entered. This means that the unit thinks that my three bikes have the same size wheels - which isn't the situation! As a consequence I get incorrect speed and distance readings. I can't see where I can find out what my max heart rate was on a particular ride. The twist unlock is dangerous when riding, being easy to mistakingly unlock the unit from the bike when riding. The buttons are hard to activate when riding. Is unessarily complicated when wanting to retieve data, make setting changes etc without the manual close by - try that when you are in the rain on a MTB! I should have done more research before I bought the unit!

Versatility plus
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, Good Fit
"I think the best feature on this computer is not just the incredibly extensive number of fields of data this computer can process but the way in which it delivers to the rider. The screen is customisable, in that, you may choose how many different sets of data and which data appears on the screen. So, if you are doing a heart rate session, all elements pertinent to your heart rate can be displayed. If you have a hills session, this can be accommodated on page 2 with all things altitude, power focussed on page 3 etc.
This product typifies Garmin's expertise in GPS navigation technology and commitment to training performance monitoring. This is one very powerful training tool and a good looking computer to boot.
The backlight is superb for anyone who rides in the dark.

Great bit of gear!
Pros: Great Value, Attractive, High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile, flexible screens, autopause while timer on, ghost rider feature, lots of internal memory
Cons: takes time to locate gps, altimeter may go out of calibration, software usability limited, software won't upload to unit
"Have had the Garmin Edge 500 for two weeks now, what a great bit of gear! ! It far surpasses anything on offer in this price range including the Sigma ROX 9.0 and even the high priced and over-featured Polars. It isn't bulky but it has a very solid feel. It mounts easily on the bars, time will tell if the elastic o-rings securing the mount will survive for long in the weather.
GPS is very accurate and mounts on a second bike without need for speed/cadence sensor. You can mark waypoints using the lap button for review on the software later. Altimeter goes out of calibration if it is cold and the altimeter was warm when you started (meaning you might record a greater descent than you actually have).
You can start the timer but autopause feature means it doesn't start timing your ride until you're moving. Likewise it will stop while you're waiting for a traffic light or whatever. Turn the timer off and the clock won't record anything while you're wheeling your bike to the shed.
Quoted battery life is 18 hours, but if you download every night via USB, the unit will recharge through the port while you analyse your ride, so battery life isn't really a big deal.
"Course" feature is really good. You can challenge yourself around a course you've done before and see whether or not you're ahead or behind (similar to "Ghost Rider" on the Polars). Your course is displayed on two screens when you scroll through. Unfortunately, you can only use a course you have already mapped in your Edge 500 history.
The software (Training Center 3.04 downloadable from Garmin) is usable but limited. It only exports to .tcx or .gpx files which means you need a third party program to covert it to .txt or .csv if you want to slice and dice it a bit more on a spreadsheet. You can create courses from previous rides. However, I have not been able to upload a course successfully from Mac to Edge. www.montebellosoftware.com make an excellent alternative called Ascent with heaps of useful features absent from Training Center - its only a matter of time before you'll be able to upload courses to Edge500, as Garmin have only recently released the SD Kits to software developers.

Personal training data mine
Pros: Durable, Attractive, High Quality, Rugged, Good Fit
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"Now that I have had this gadget for a week and have had a chance to try out all the functions, I'm really impressed. I have also come to realise that it should be thought of as an "GPS enhanced" bike computer, not a full-on GPS with bicycle functions.
Formally, I have had Cateye computers (cadence models, wireless and wired) and I have found them pretty good. However, when my last one disappeared, I thought I should try something that collected a bit more information. After reading the glowing reviews, here and on other sites, I thought I should go for the Garmin Edge 500.
First impressions: coming from the diminutive Cateye wireless models, is that it is quite big. But since comparing it to other people's bike computers it isn't really that big — but it would be on the larger side of current bike computer offerings. It feels really solid and well built; or to be clearer, it feels like it would survive a tumble onto the deck. The cadence/speed unit is reasonably compact (slightly smaller than others I have used); and the heart strap is comfortable and easy to adjust.
The ANT+ system standard that all the peripherals work on is pretty clever, with automatic pairing and sensing of the units. You can also get a USB ANT+ stick to use the heart rate and speed monitor directly with your computer (which I guess is good if you have a trainer and/or stuck inside). You can also use non-Garmin ANT+ peripherals with the Edge 500 (power meters, etc).
Unfortunately, the Garmin software for Mac OS X is not the best, and I haven't tried the PC software which I have heard is better. The Garmin Connect website works just like many standalone software packages – is not too bad – and makes it easy to keep up to date from multiple computers. There seems to be plenty of third-party software available which can read directly from the unit (when it is USB attached).
The firmware for the device seems to get regular updates. I've noticed Team Garmin all sport one on their handlebars; perhaps their on-road experience is filtering through to the end users. For my confidence, I do wish the bike mount were more solid, but of course, it hasn't failed yet. While on the minus side, I also find the buttons can sometimes be a bit stubborn when on the bike, and the unit has crashed once (it didn't lose any information).
With my former bike computer, I would sometimes use iPhone software to create a GPS track. At the time, I thought it was pretty nifty, if not a little limited. The Edge 500 is far superior. The GPS accuracy compared to the iPhone is unparalleled. The fact that all the data from your ride is consolidated is definitely an advantage, and the options for viewing and (if you are so inclined) analysing are numerous.
Even though my analysis of my rides is pretty light, I can look back to where I felt good or was suffering and try and see what was going on. It is interesting, if nothing else!
Highly recommended for those who like to ride, and would like to keep a record of the fun they had. Or at least know how stoically you suffered."

Mount failure
Posted February 15, 2011
I have been very happy with my Edge 500 until I hit a small pothole on my road bike. Both locating lugs on my Edge 500 broke off similtaineously and the Edge 500 fell to the road. Both lugs remained in the black bike mounting bracket. No other damage occured to the unit, but when I approached Garmin in Australia for a warranty claim, they said it it was not covered and wanted to charge A$200 to replace the back. In my mind this is an obvious flaw in design or manufacture and should have been covered under warranty. I could not recommend this item with its flawed mounting system.

Pros: Versatile, easy to use, great display of data
"I purchased this item on the recommendation of others and after reviewing it online. It lives up to it's reputation. It is easy to to fit and easy to use with the ability to customise the displays to individual training needs. The training data is easy to download and provides all the information that any cyclist could use. It has three training modes so it can be shared or used for other activities such as running. I have used a variety of training computers and heart rate monitors in the past, and while I have only had this one a short time, it is the one I would recommend."

Super!
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, Comfortable, Durable, Good Fit, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight
"It came time to buy a computer for a new bike and this one seemed a little expensive ( $300A) but the ordinary wireless computes were heading in that direction.
There is no comparison with the Garmin. It does everything. Whatever you want to know- it's there. if you are into hills climbing all the gradients, graphs are available. Heart rate does not factor in good looking girls walking past and I'm still wondering if my wife can use the home computer to find out where I am at any one time.
It will take me a while to work out all of the capabilities (I have no teenagers living at home) but i'm happy at the moment with time, speed, calories burnt and average speed.
It works in the car too! Amazing how many calories you burn at 110kmh!

Garmin Edge 500
Pros: Great Value, High Quality, Rugged
"This thing is a little gem easy to set up and works a treat. GPS is accurate and + you get HRM and cadence to boot (as additional extras). No maps on this model but that does not bother me the advantage of that is it is small enough to carry in your pocket should you wish. Twist and click sytem is brilliant keeps it secure to the bike and easy to remove so nobody nicks it. Weather proofing works wonder had it out in the snow and it got ckaed in mud cleaned it off and still going. Easy to upload the data to Garmin web site which lets you view data in lots of nice graphs. Not only will it track your distance, speed , HR and cadence it will track your elevation to. If your in the market for a cycle computer I would recomend this not all singing all dancing but great product at a good price."

Beyond most bike computers
Pros: Attractive, Lightweight, Rugged, Versatile
"I used to have a Cateye to monitor my cadence, speed and distance, and RunKeeper on the iPhone to track the ride. Only problem was the poor battery life with RunKeeper going.
I had heard problems with the Garmin 705 mount, where several people have lost their unit due to the mount not being secure; have to say the new mount with the Edge 500 is both simple, and very secure, even around the poor road in Sydney.
It's great having one device monitoring speed, cadence, distance and route, with a bonus of heart rate monitoring. I found it a good size, not being too large but still easy to read. I have not found problems with glare on the screen as some have noted; perhaps it's how I have it mounted on the stem.
Having the heart rate monitor has been very useful, as I know when I've been slacking off; I'm not serious enough to spend the money on a power meter, but if I do, I can also still use the Edge 500 as the head unit.

Garmin Edge 500
Pros: Attractive, Durable, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"This is my first GPS cycle computer and I am really impressed. It is simple to use and with the cadence/speed sensor it provides me with all the data I need for my rides. You can set up 3 separate bike settings in it so I have my commuting bike, my mtb and my "nice" road bike in there. If you are using a turbo trainer you can switch off the GPS and using the speed sensor you still have all your ride data. It is also ready to take data from a power sensor - that's a little out of my league though! This computer has more data options than anyone will ever need and you can easily configure the 3 "ride" screens with anything from 1 to 7 (I think) items of data, so I have set mine up so that there is one screen for hills (has gradient etc), one for normal riding and one for turbo training. Whilst it doesn't have the map functionality of the 705 series, if you know where you are going then that's not a problem. I have a number of regular routes so having map capability was not what I needed.
This little beauty is a great training aid and I love it!"

Greatest cycle computer yet
Pros: Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight
"This is the cycle computer with the free steak knives....
The addition of GPS to what looks like a big cycle computer allows the rider to review their personal data on PC relative to the terrain, road so that analysis is meaningful, without costly mapping software, as most riders do know where they are going!
Cadence/Speed and Heart Rate are all Ant+, so setup is easy, and performance flawless. This computer was so easy to setup and use, I am an expert after only a few rides. The only real problem is the extra time spent post ride downloading the data and comparing all the inputs!

What a Bike Computer!
Pros: Adjustable, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: wobbly fixing....
"In the past I've always used a Polar heart rate monitor and a mavic cycling computer. These both gave good information, but taking the time to log down each ride, including where I went, was a pain as the bike computer didn’t record rides, it simply reset itself the next day, meaning you had to get all you precious ride data off it that night. So for people who ride everyday and like to log all their ride/training data down, an all in one solution is the best... That’s where the EDGE500 comes in.
With the heart rate monitor and CAD sensor included in this version of the Edge500, almost all the data you could ever want is stored on the device, and if you have a power meter with ant+, you'll have ALL the data you could ever need! It will also store a lot or rides in its internal memory (I'm sure you could manage a year’s worth!), and downloading the information to Garmin Connect, which is brilliant and simple to use, is very easy and fast.
With the added GPS function, I now have all my data effortlessly, but also know exactly where I have been for future reference.
It may be a tiny bit bulky compared to other cycle computers, but it's still a sleek unit (that matches my clubs colours!) for all the functions it has.
After setting up the 3 available screens (you can chose up to 8 different 'data fields' to display on each screen, and select what they are from a large range of options) using it is a doddle. Simply press a button to switch to one of the custom screens you've designed, showing only the data you want to see. I found this an excellent feature and made the following pages -
1 - General including speed, grade, heart rate, heading etc.
2 - A totals page that show stuff like distance, total ascent.
3 - Heart rate page including zone, % of max, cals and a large graph that updates real time showing what zones your riding in!
Overall this product is excellent and fully customizable to suit your needs. Top marks!
The only downsides I found are -
The mounting bracket is held on by fancy rubber bands, I don’t really trust them with a £200 unit, I'd have preferred a clamp or zip tie option.
The heart rate monitor included isn't the premium version with a full fabric strap, but it's comfier than other plastic/rubber based ones I've used in the past.
Top work from Garmin."

Masterpiece
Pros: Attractive, Great Value, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"Unitl now you had no choice: a bulky GPS mounted on your bike or wrist, or an expensive wristop GPS/watch.
I´ve been waiting long for a sleek, useful and fully packed masterpiece of electronics for my outdoor rides. And it had to come from Garmin again.
Despite you are a professional biker or just take your kids for a ride on Sunday morning, this nice looking computer will give you the right information at the right time. Just as it sounds! The screen is concise and readable. You ride on your bike and there you go with the push of a button.
At 18hr battery life this unit provides for your longer rides and can be charge by simply plugging it to a USB port.
It's small, compact, nice looking and delivers. Simply my choice!"

All the information you need and more
Pros: High Quality, easy to set up
"i bought a new bike so thought i'd kit it out with one of these and wasn't disappointed! tells you all the information you need to know speed, distance and time plus so much more. good having the cadence and HR to know how hard i am working when out on a ride and with the speed sensor doubled with the cadence sensor attached to the back wheel allows for indoor training either on a turbo trainer or a set of rollers. you get enough attachments to fit to a couple of bikes and as its GPS you just turn it on and hit the road!!!!
i use garmin connect to check my route and all other information it gives you which is very easy to use.
i would recommend this to any cyclist as it is some piece of kit!!!"

Top notch
Pros: Attractive, High Quality
"I recently decided to upgrade from a lower end gps and figured my needs would be answered by the edge 500 and I wasn't wrong. With the heart rate and cadence monitors it provides me with all the information i could possibly need from %grade of climbs to power wattage. Uploading to Garmin connect is easy and provides an indepth analysis of rides, graphs etc. Cant complain and annoyed I didnt buy it sooner!"

Great Motivational Tool
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Rugged, Lightweight, Versatile, motivational
Cons: Limited Color Choices, elevation data suspect
"Goal setting feature motivates me to get out on my bike, to achieve monthly mileage target. Helps you to progress in your cycling, as what gets measured can be improved. I don't trust elevation data feature, as the same route on different days can give vastly different data, otherwise excellent product."

"This has made riding a bike more interesting i.e checking cadance and HR.I use it when I'm using my indoor trainer and find it very helpful when I download the data and compare with previos data. A must have tool for road or indoor riding"
