"Now that i have been using my Garmin for training and racing i cant go back to other products. The information, ease of use and functionality of the 500 is second to none. All my data is on display and easy to access. Garmin Connect is easy to use and allows me to analysis and store all my data. The 500 has heaps of information. Some functions i havent used as yet, but they're there if i want to use it. Looks good on the bike . Im really happy with the product and would recommend it to anyone."

Great easy to use unit
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, functional
"Over time I have had several Edge units, starting with the 305, then 705 and finally the 800. So when I got the 500 I was already familiar with many of the functions.
But what I like about this is the size, obviously it is smaller than the 800 as it doesn't have a map function. But it is small enough to be discrete on the bike, while large enough to read the screen clearly. It is a great screen, very clear text. Functionality-wise, very easy to set up (even for my four bikes) and easy to navigate."

The Garmin Edge 500
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight, Good Fit
Cons: Expensive
"I have used this computer for commuting so far and it gives more information about the route than I beleived was possible. Instructions are not to clear but play with the computer and you soon learn, the same can be said about the download software."

Great piece of kit
Pros: Durable, High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: Expensive, Limited Color Choices
"I have long been using GPS devices on my rides to track my performance. Typically I have used Runkeeper on my iPhone which is fine but it zaps the battery in no time - especially if you keep the screen on for the whole ride. On longer rides this means either keeping the screen off which makes it more difficult to watch your progress or invest in additional batteries which increases weight. The Garmin Edge 500 overcomes this issue. I have used it on a 4 hour ride so far and it barely made a dent in the battery life. You can ride all day with this thing safe in the knowledge that it won't die on you. It is very easy to use and allows you to customise the information displayed on the screen. You can even have different stats on different pages and scroll through them. It provides loads of useful information such as elevation, temperature, max speed and all sorts of other things as well as the basic stuff like time and distance.
It has a simple nike mount which is small enough not to get in the way and is pretty secure. The unit is also pretty small and lightweight so doesn't get in your way or become too much of a distraction.
There are some neat features like the ability to load up your route so that you can keep track of your pace.
Once completed you just connect it to your PC and upload the activity to Garmin Connect where you can analyse your activity and see your route on a map.
It is possibly a bit on the pricey side but if you're a serious rider and you do 4 or 5 long rides a month or more I think the cost is justified."

Enough for an Age Grouper
Pros: Attractive, High Quality
Cons: Expensive, Unadjustable
"Bought this as my Trek Speed Concept supports ANT+ and so far the computer works well with my Trek Duo-trap censor. Edge 800 is too much for me as a new entrant into triathlon who is willing to focus on Ironman 70.3 distance, in terms of both functionality as well as size. The black/grey one fits my black Trek Speed Concept 7.5. The buttons are firm but okay to press when I ride. I feel the Garmin product is more accurate than the Endomondo on my iPhone (maybe iPhone's GPS problem). Thre's heavy rain after my race but the computer proves to be water proof. The only problem is the bike mount system coming along with the computer. Garmin offers two sizes of elastic bands but even the largest is not long enough to fix the computer on the extension bars, let alone the stem which is wider than the extensions. It'd be better if Garmin offers a different bike mont option with zip ties. Note that there's a seperate Garmin bike mount system to sell on Wiggle at the cost of 7 pounds which to me is totally unworthy."

Glad I got it!
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Versatile
"I thought for quite a while about getting this but am very glad I did. I already had a decent computer (Cateye Strada) but wanted more information (altitude, gratient, HRM data, etc.). After looking at a lot of other units this one was chosen for two main reasons:
1. I couldn't find another computer that had a Statute UK setting - i.e. speed in MPH, distance in miles, temp in degrees C and altitude in metres. Every other computer I looked at either had metric or imperial settings - you couldn't mix and match.
2. The ability to customise the data you see on several screens is fantastic. I have set up 3 screens - first one for speed, distance, etc, second one for times, etc, and third one for HRM data. Again, no other computer Iooked at offered this level of customisation.
The only minor niggle I had was that the battery level always showed 99%. However, this is a known problem with this unit and is easily remedied by completely discharging the unit and recharging.
If you are in any doubt about buying this computer (it isn't particularly cheap) I would just go for it - you won't regret it!"

Great Wireless COmputer
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Rugged, High Quality, Adjustable
"I am very pleased with the functionality of the Edge 500. Being able to track distance, route, altitude, temperature and time and then download to Garmin connect and review my MTB races is fantastic. The only issue is that the GPS recorded distance is not accurate for a mountain bike rider, probably due to lots of turns and hills. I am looking at getting the wireless wheel sensor to rectify."

Excellent feature set
Pros: High Quality
"I have upgraded to Edge 500 from Forerunner 305 for the following reasons:
- barometeric altimeter (GPS-only altimeters are too inacurate to capture climbing grades properly),
- long battery life (305 does not last my longest rides),
- good handlebar mount,
- temperature capture,
- bigger screen that can show more data fields.
I am very happy with the upgrade but will mention two quirks.
- the climbing grades are indeed shown much better (steady and accurate) than on the GPS only Forerunner. However, they show up on the screen with a surprisingly long delay (the display seems to be some 10s behind). I suppose it is a design decision to calculate the grade over a longer distance and make the measurement more accurate. Nevertheless, the delay seems excessive.
- When the memory is full (it should be after 180 hours of data collection) you have to manually clear the history to prevent the device from stopping collecting the data. It is one very strange design decision. Forerunner simply starts overwriting your old data without asking. That is much better since anyone buying such a device will surely save/upload the data more often than every 180 hours of riding.

Love it
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Adjustable
"I've been using my Edge 500 for about a month now and have been nothing but impressed.
Initial set up is easy, and once i had clicked through a few menu's i've found it very easy to use.
Pairing with heart rate and cadence sensors more or less takes care of itself.
I can't say I mastered all of it's features and functions yet as there so many. In all honesty more than i will probably ever need.
Having the ability to customise the pages so you can choose what fields you view is superb.
In addition to the computer all the functionality that comes from Garmin connect is excellent
I've struggled to find any negatives, but the one minor one I have noticed is the button layout. In my opinion the menu button seems to be in the wrong place if you are right handed, but this is minor point.
Would recommend without hesitation, superb."

Gadget City, here I come!
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile
"I don't have anything to add that others haven't said. The 500 is great - it has all the features that you want and not too much fluff. It is easy to use. Having 2 bike mounts included is very useful. I got the premium HR strap also and that is VERY comfortable and accurate. The Garmin website is pretty good, Strava is also good. The manual is easy to follow via the included CD/DVD. I have had zero problems with this product and am totally addicted to looking at my (poor) ride stats and performance."

love this computer
Pros: Great Value, Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight
"quite simply the greatest piece of equipment i have bought for my bike.
given the myriad of functions i was expecting it to be very difficult to set up, but i was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was very simple to navigate and setup (thanks to following the instructions). The hardest part was determining what information i wanted to display on the 3 available pages of data.
setup was simple, pairing to the Garmin HRM was the easiest i've seen and installing on the bike was a walk in the park..
the hardest part was working out how to use the MyGarmin and GarminConnect interfaces on the internet where you can upload your workouts and track your data but a little fiddling has seen me work out the basics and i'm now a fully fledged statistics junky.
you will love this product- read the instructions to help you set it up and you won't have any problems!"

Very nice gadget
Pros: Durable, Rugged, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"Have been very pleased with this Garmin device. Battery life is amazing. Display options are really good - I have set up 2 pages with 2 items of info on so I can see the large type easily while cycling and 1 page with 8 items on for a full review of how far, how long, ascent etc.
One thing the product description didn't tell me was that it comes with 2 bike mounts - perfect as I have a mountain bike and a road bike. I sent back the extra mount I bought for a refund - not sure if I got lucky or if it should come with 2.
The Edge 500 is compatible with garmin heart straps so I use the one which came with my Forerunner watch which saved me a few quid.
I wish the colour choices were available for all packages - the red/black one I wanted is too expensive for the extra you get, but I'm happy with my choice - black.
Overall a perfect gadget for the cycling enthusiast. I prefer it to the Edge 800 with it's colour display especially as the battery lasts for so long."

Good, compact and plenty of info
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Limited Color Choices
"Having owned a 705 (which started to give trouble after a few years and a few days subjected to particularly heavy rain) I decided to get one of these as the cost of replacing the 705 was almost as much. Also tought the 800 was too big plus I never really used the map features of the 705 anyway.
Initial impression, it is tiny compared with the 705!
But that means the screen is also a lot smaller. But after a whicle you get used to it.
Not as easy to navigate either as everything is done through buttons rather than the joystick.
But overall an excellent product, like all Garmin products"
