best quality and value that I could find
Pros: Great Value, High Quality, Rugged
"I needed to replace my old studded winter tires as they were cracked, misshaped and started getting flats. These Schwalbe tires are far superior in quality and a great value. Studded tires that I can rely on are essential equipment for my winter rides. When the temperatures dip below freezing, I never know when I'll hit a patch of ice and loose control but with studded tires, I am safe. I can bike across surfaces that I would slip on walking. I get a smooth ride on these tires and I don't think I've lost any studs during the break-in period. They are sturdy, designed well, fit well and feel secure."

Good on ice, not good on wet snow
Pros: Rugged
Cons: don't seem to work on wet snow
"I've been using these tyres all this winter (20011/12). I commute to work about twice a week and it's a 50 mile round trip on country lanes, so I've given the tyres a good testing in sub-zero conditions.
I've had absolutely no problem on ice and heavy frost. They work fine on tarmac whether wet or dry and you can lean the bike over without any problems. The best thing about them is the peace of mind they give. Instead of worrying whether the shiny piece of tarmac at the bottom of the hill is water or ice, you can just relax and just get on with the ride.
Until recently I haven't been able to test it on snow as we simply haven't had any where I live. That changed last weekend. I set off for work on Monday morning confident I would have no problem on snow,. I couldn't have been more wrong. I did 7 miles on roads which had been gritted, after which I turned onto smaller untreated road with a couple of inches of slushy snow. As soon as I did, the bike was sliding all over the place. I had the tyre pressure fairly high at around 60 psi, but I very much doubt it would have made much difference. I had 18 miles still to go but simply couldn't stay upright. The tyres might work on fresh snow, snow which has frozen or compacted by car tyres, but they sure didn't work on slushy stuff.
At 900g they're fairly heavy. I'd estimate they reduce my speed by 2 mph and, not surprisingly you slow down much more going up hill.
They aren't too difficult to get on, and I've only lost 2 studs in well over 1000 miles use. They aren't too noisy and the noise gets less once the studs bed in. I'll definitely carry on using these tyres, but to be honest, I can't wait to get my lighter bikes out of the garage."

Black Ice
Pros: Durable, Rugged, Good Fit
Cons: Bulky
"I have used the prevoius Schwalbe Snow tyre for ten years for mid winetr commuting and leisure. It was very good. The current tyre with double the studs is even better. I use the 700 size, you need lots of frame clearance. Makes the winter a lot more fun."

Very disapointing tyres
Cons: Expensive, Low Quality, Wears Out Easily
"I bought these in anticipation of another harsh winter as I would like to keep cycling in icy conditions. Schwable recommend that the tyres are bedded in on tarmac for a few miles before being used in anger in winter conditions.
With this in mind I have treated them with kid gloves and took them out on a cautious bedding in ride. I can only assume the tyres are made of cheese as after riding like a pensioner for an hour (no harsh cornering, braking or accelerating) I have managed to loose a significant number of studs from both tyres. The studs are effectively flat rivets and they don't seem to be embedded into the tread at a deep enough level to seat them securely. They ping out alarmingly easy when moving the bike around.
Very poor in terms of durablility, especially given their price. I'm going to revert back to an old set of WTB Pathway tyres for winter conditions. They don't have any studs but they can at least take some abuse when run at a low pressure."

Pros: stops you slipping on ice
Cons: Expensive, studs can be easily lost while bedding in
"Tyres went onto the rims with no problems. Had a bit of bother with studs falling out while bedding them in. I found reducing the pressures for the first 30 miles helped.
Haven't had much in the way of snow and ice, though I did cycle for a couple of miles uphill on a thin patch of ice. The bike was stable, and handled like it was a dry road.
I'm not too sure about cornering at speed on dry roads yet, worried about either the bike sliding, or loosing studs.
If you cycle a lot over the winter, i'd highly recommend these tyres to keep you safe from wipeouts.
Only real problem is that i keep waiting for more ice to play on."

good but lose studs fast
Pros: work well
Cons: Expensive, Wears Out Easily
"These tyres offer amazing grip on snow and ice but the studs fall out fast and as far as I can see it's not possible to buy spare studs. I am losing them as a rate off about 1 stud per 5 miles which is far from ideal. However, they are still great but consdiering the price not great value for money as after about 500 miles there will be so many studs missing I might as well use normal tyres! A solution would be to keep the first worn-out tyre and use the remaining studs in the next tyre as they fall out becasue it's easy to press them in. Really, Schwalbe should make spare studs available or even supply the tyres with 20 spares or so (or fix them more securely in the first place)."

Expensive, but incredible.
Pros: Durable, Rugged, High Quality, Good Fit
Cons: Expensive
"This really is an excellent Tyre! It works well on ice, and i would definitely recommend it to any serious commuter. i did find it very hard work at first, but after wearing in the studs over a week or so, and giving them a bit more air, i found that they were quieter and quicker.
All in all a great piece of kit and they saved my skin a few times!

Usual Schwalbe quality
Pros: High Quality, Rugged, Good Fit, kevlar protection
Cons: noisy
"Well made tyre with all the studs perfectly in place.
Fitted on to the wheel fairly easily but all Schwalbe tyres are more difficult than most to fit.
I have not yet had the chance to test this tyre out on the ice yet, but it is recommended that 20 miles of use on hard surfaces should be done prior to using in the snow and ice to bed the studs in.
When riding on tarmac it sounds like ice crunching under the tyres!
I have put these tyres onto a bike set aside for snow and ice conditions, I would not recommend it for a general winter weather tyre because of the noise.

"Short" but "sweet"
Pros: Rugged, High Quality
Cons: Expensive
"The weather window in which theses tyres can be used may be short but the result is sweet. As a committed cycle commuter, they they are the business. Whilst the cars were sliding & making slow progress and most other cyclists were off the road, I was having no problem. While caution still was still needed, I still carried out my 10 mile each way commute without issue."

Superb wintertire !
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Comfortable, High Quality, Versatile, Good Fit
Cons: Bulky
"This spiked tire really works. Last week there was a horrendous winterrain that had the streets totally covered in ice.
That morning I rode the bike to work without any problem whatsoever.
Of course I didn´t press on but I held a steady pace of up to 30 km/h and I felt no nervous moments. Had I been riding on my Nokia A10 I would have fallen hard. The guys at work told me I was crazy riding the bike in those conditions and I could understand their point of view because it was almost impossible to walk around without falling on your behind !
I would recommend these tires to anyone that wants to ride in icy conditions and feel safe. They are not very heavy to ride on asphalt either (I run 5 bars in all conditions since I´m a 100 kg), and I feel perfectly safe on gravelstrewn asphaltroads too.
A real plus for the reflective sidewalls, they look great and add safety in the dark winternights.
The listprice for these tires in Sweden is about £65 each and that is just to much. The £35 i paid at Wiggle is a real bargain since the deliverycost to Sweden was just over £4.
Keep up riding all year
Martin"

Oh for some more icy weather...
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: spare set of wheels desirable
"First, the disclaimer: I haven't had the chance yet to run these tyres on significant ice. There was a Europe-wide run on studded tyres during the cold snap: no retailer I contacted in early December could obtain any until at least the middle of January. I've been out on a couple of frosty mornings, but not knowingly on any sheet ice.
However, first impressions are good. They are surprisingly light, given that the rubber has to be sturdy enough to hold the studs. They feel much lighter than my Marathon Plus tyres - and are easier to fit! Once on the bicycle they improve rider safety because of the excellent reflective strip.
Compared to the standard Marathons, there is a little more tyre noise, which is probably due to the more knobbly tread pattern rather than the stud, and possibly a bit more rolling resistance. Grip when cornering seems to be just as positive, and on a local muddy lane I felt I had more control - probably a combination of the tread pattern and the studs. I don't get the impression that I have to alter my road riding style.
On the down side, it's a bit of a pain doing frequent tyre changes. Sure, it only takes twenty minutes or so, but that's not much use if you only realise that the roads are icy as you're about to leave for work, etc. If you're serious about riding through icy weather, factor in the cost of a spare pair of wheels, fit your winter tyres to them and store them next to your bicycle. Quick-release are so called for a reason!"

Great Product
"The 700c/35mm Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires have been great. I used my wife’s mountain bike with a different brand of wider studded tires earlier in the winter for commuting while I was waiting for the Schwalbe tires to arrive for my road bike. For the conditions I have ridden in, the narrow tires will let me ride through about anything the wide tires can handle. I have a 10km round trip commute on city streets. Most of the snow this winter fell when the temperature was around -18C. There were no thawing days in December and January and only a few in February. The snow would pack fairly hard on the well travelled streets. On the side streets, some would pack into hard spots and some would consolidate into patches the consistency of beach sand without the traction of sand. The studs were great on the hard packed spots. The patches of dense loose snow were a lot more difficult to navigate. Studs made little difference because there was nothing for them to grab onto.
Once the weather started thawing and the streets would have patches of hard ice in the mornings where the water running across them had refrozen during the night, the studs worked well. In some intersections, the Schwalbe tires on my bike gave me more control than the cars had.
On dry pavement, the rolling resistance does not seem to be too bad. I don’t have a speedometer on the road bike that has the Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires on it, but I don’t feel too much slower than normal street tires. The 700c/35mm Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires are far faster than wide, heavy lugged, mountain bike tires on the street.
After nearly 100km, on the Marathon Winter tires, the studs look fine. I have only lost one stud. Riding outside this winter would not have been possible without studs. Being able to use the road bike was great."

Good tyre for winter commuters.
"Having studs is a great advantage in the winter and this tyre is perfect if you are worried about clearance on a road bike.
The tyre runs quite smoothly as the studs are slightly offset from the centre and dig in when you turn or start to slip.
My only concern was the break in period you are advised to go through - 40km with low acceleration and braking on clear roads. In this period 3 of my studs pulled out, even though I was very careful. Luckily I noticed two of them and put them back in when I got home but that unfortunately leaves me missing a stud,
Maybe Schwalbe should supply these tyres with ten or so spare studs.
Apart from that the tyre is great and I will definately get another when this one is dead."

Amazing on ice and snow
Pros: Durable, High Quality, Rugged
Cons: Expensive, Bulky, noisy if there is no ice or snow
"Incredible tyres for ice and snow. Rode these for many weeks last winter, often on sheet ice and snow covered ice for a 5 mile commute. Felt very confident. You may still skid around a bit, but it's very controlled and you won't wipe out.
However, they are very noisy on plain tarmac so you really can only use them in the depth of winter. I have them fitted on an old bike, just for really icy days. As with all marathon tyres, they are a bit hard to get on the rims, due to the wire bead, so you don't want to be swapping them backwards and forwards too often."

Studded Winter Tyres
Pros: Durable, Great Value, Attractive, Rugged, High Quality, Versatile, unstoppable, highly addictive!
Cons: Expensive, sounds like sraping fingernails!
"A lot of people say the rolling resitance is affected yet only lost 5 miles range on my electric bike. Not bad for an extremely hilly torturous route to a lighthouse plus had a shore wind both ways. If two were fitted it may make it worse. Would say the road version has little or no drag compared to the more aggresive full winter & snow tyre from Schwable. Mine is fitted to a powered electric front wheel as was fed up with torque steer and fishtailing. With this tyre the bike is absolutely rock solid and unstoppable with this tyre on the front. Perfect for front wheel drive and reckon this a hard tyre to beat for all year round use as it gives you unimaginable control and confidence and see no reason why it should be any different when wet, muddy or even icy. Would love to try these on my mountain bike especilly the full winter versions. A highly addictive tyre!"
