It's good for me!
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"As a previous owner of a Garmin Forerunner product, I had an idea of what I wanted the Edge 800 to do for me, but I deliberated and pondered for a long time between the 800 and the Edge 705. To me, £450 was no small amount of money for a gadget!
I bought the product to plot routes to follow, then to train against performance and improve. Plus the fact that you can get geeky with the stats and there's so much information for download after a ride.
I use my road bike on a turbo trainer as well as out on the roads, and I'll also be using it with a mountain bike too. Due to the snow and ice we've had over the last few weeks, I've only taken it on the roads a few times, the remainder on a turbo.
The product works superbly well for me, does exactly what I want it to do. A small criticism is the beep for turn alert isn't very loud and could be easily missed - hopefully this will be revised in a future upgrade.
Touchscreen works absolutely fine with gloves on - and I'm talking thick gloves for the cold temperatures we've had!
Garmin connect is also a great surprise to me. I don't know many of the local quieter roads nearby, so I've already begun to download other users rides to follow to build my own local knowledge.
Quite alot of money for the product, but I feel it has been worth it so far. Very happy indeed.

Garmin Edge 800
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Adjustable, Lightweight, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"I'm really impressed with the Edge 800 so far, I bought the 'all in' version with the cadence sensor, heart rate monitor and map pack. The result it seems is that you get what you pay for, I'm left wanting for nothing in terms of statistics (I've had it a week). I had no real issues getting everything set up and working, although the manual left me guessing in a few places, it doesn't really explain anything in much detail. . .
I had to tinker for a while to get the Edge 800 to display the fields I wanted to see on each screen. One page for time, speed, distance, calories and another for heart rate and heart rate zone, cadence etc, the last page for satalite reception and battery life etc. but now it is set up it is brilliant, and spectacularly more accurate than the GPRS Apps I have used on my phone.
I use it on my Hardtail MTB at the mo, but I'd have no reservations to buy the cadence sensor again to get the same info for another bike in the future. Brilliant
The only negatives I would list are the expense and the screen is possibly a little low res (when I'm out using it 'in the field' contrast ratio and legibility are far more important than the resolution, both of which it provides well!)."

Good product, but needs to not reset when lost
"The product is good quality. You must get the rubber sleeve that you can buy seperatly though otherwise there can be water ingress into the USB part. (it is only around £10 so worth it, also if you drop it you have rubber protection.)
The downside - if it does lose connection is can reset back to your home address when you should be following a map.
To note - when you are in a new area, such as doing a sportive turn it on and let it load before the start, it might need to update the maps.
The upside - Great gadget, read the manual and you can have some good stats on the ride but careful not to overload yourself. You can look at them using garmin connect or strava afterwards"

Garmin Edge 800 GPS
Pros: Attractive, Adjustable, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"Only fault is its price. Does everything you need and more. With expandability of Ant+ and more money. The Online map utilities are just a valuable as the device. Explore and share maps and geek out with your stats. I've read some reviews of its lack of durability in wet environments. I bought a rubber protective case straight away and had no problems in heavy rain for over an hour."

Good buy
Pros: High Quality, Rugged, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"Got this and it worked straight out of the box. I had a little problem uploading the GPX files I had created but once I got the hang of it it was ok. Once on the road, it is easy to use and follow with an audible signal before junctions. It makes a different noise if you miss one. This is useful if you are tiring at the end of a long ride.
On the downside, I loaded two routes for a recent weekend, but drove between the end of one and the start of the other. It tried to run them as one ride and halfway throught he second cut out. I could not get it to restart, despite button pressing on a number of occasions. Once I wiped the whole history, it worked perfectly with the next upload.
I have not tried the training element yet, but this looks both easy to use and useful.
Having not had a sat nav before, I am impressed and plan to use it in Europe this summer.

Lots of functionality
Pros: High Quality, Adjustable
Cons: Expensive
"There are not many who need a Garmin Edge 800, but it is for the technology geeks of cycling. And there are many of them! The Edge 800 offers and excellent array of functionality and combined with www.strava.com becomes a worthy training partner.
A few tips: install the magnet close to the tip of the speed sensor arm otherwise the speed readings will fluctuate. Also, use the Edge 800 with the speed/cadence sensor as it will give much more accurate speed readings and use less battery.
I can highly recommend the Edge 800. It is a fantastic tool and very helpful if you train alone. It is expensive, but ultimately worth it for those who like technology."

All the computer you will need
Pros: High Quality
Cons: Expensive
"it's a lot of money but it does the job. A great way to keep tabs on heart rate, etc. I also found it really useful when planning a new route in a new area. Plan it at home and then I don't have to worry about getting the map out to see which way to go.
I wonder if I should get a cheaper model, but glad I took the plunge.
Recomended

Pros: Great Value, Rugged, High Quality, Lightweight, Good Fit
Cons: Expensive, scratches easily
"Yes this is a very expensive product and yes it is a tech toy, but once you get over the whole "why would you want all of this" its actually a very serious bit of kit!
For sportif riders its great for downloading the routes, allowing you to be guided and see what is coming up. Ive used it in races and the profile page is so useful, you can see the big climbs coming and gauge your efforts accordingly ,sneeky i know :)
The pages are totally customisable and thus you see what you want. the touch screen is like the iphones etc and is very responsive even in sub zero temp, in rain and through winter gloves.
My only down side, is that the screen does scract easily, having used in bad conditions, this is where you must rub your fongers on yourself before touching the screen.
A fantastic product and great fun analysisng your rides and racing yourself."

Great product
Pros: Adjustable, Versatile
"I like the large display on the Edge 800 and the way I can change the display with multiple screens that I can preset.
HRM and cadence works first and always.
Had a little trouble with the speed reading initially because I did not have the speed sensor close enough to the wheel magnet. All good now."

Great gps unit
Pros: Attractive, Rugged, High Quality, Versatile
Cons: Expensive
"I bought this unit after as an upgrade to the edge 500
Some would say I'm mad but it was a worthy upgrade, the gps connect faster and seems to be much more accurate, the turn by turn navigation is very cool and handy
The ability to save your ride as a course after on the unit was excellent
The only downside I have is that the rain cover for the USB connection is fiddily to get back on .. The same problem was on the edge 500
I would fully recommend this to anyone but it is a pricey cadget at nearly 400 notes"

Great product
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"After signing up to take part in the UK End 2 End cycle I purchased this to aid in my training miles. Am very impressed, very easy to use and the screen is readable even in sun light. The speed sensor fits to the back wheel so ideal to use on the turbo trainer to and "race" against the virtual partner!"

GPS in style
Pros: High Quality, Lightweight
Cons: Expensive
"Takes a micro card but note that this is inside the full size SD card so you need to unlock that and then insert. Rearranging the displays needs to be done on a pc and in the version I had you need to go to "training pages" despite what it says in the pdf manual. Picks up satellites quickly though on narrow roads the actual % incline readout is dodgy as it can place you on the slope of the hill rather than the road. Garmin connect software is great."

You get what you pay for...
Pros: High Quality, Versatile, long battery life
Cons: Expensive
"I am familiar with GPS units which I use for running and hiking, but this is my first cycle computer and I am not disappointed. The price caused several months of procrastination and I spent a lot of time researching cheaper units before taking the plunge with the Edge 800. A friend had used one for a while and was very pleased with it – and so am I. A wealth of functions and good battery life; with the addition of cadence sensor and HRM there really is nothing this unit cannot do (power meter was just a step too far!). The single biggest bonus is being able to plan a route on the laptop, transfer it to the 800 and not have to worry about getting lost. Then, when I come to repeat the route I can race my Virtual Partner!"

Great features
Pros: Durable, Comfortable, Rugged, High Quality, Adjustable
Cons: Expensive, Limited Color Choices, heart rate drops out
"All round a strong system. The hardware is robust and the software easy to use. The heart rate monitor does not always pick up correctly and I sometimes need to reboot the device to correct this issue, which is quite frustrating if you are hammering up a hill in Z4/5! Despite this problem I would recommend."
