"My old car had a towbar and therefore I used Thule towbar based carrier. However with my newer Qashqai I have wondered long and hard about the best way to transport my bikes.
Up until now I've simply put them inside the car. However a forthcoming trip to France calls for an exterior solution. I didn't want to fit a towbar and didn't want to use roof rails/carriers due to the fuel economy issues and inconvenience of needing to use a fork clamping solution to avoid any possibility of damaging a carbon frame by clamping it.
The Gran Fondo however is the best of all worlds. It mounts securely and quickly to the car, carries two bikes with no dis-assembly required or without any clamping of the frame. What's more it keeps the car lights and registration plate completely clear and visible so there is no need for a lightboard. Finally, it looks very cool when loaded with two bikes :-)
It has already been used in anger and performed flawlessly. Getting the bikes on and off is extremely quick, just lift, place front wheel in the holder and do up two rubber straps to secure each wheel. The only thing to get used to is seeing some lateral movement of the bikes in your rear view mirror as they are secured at the bottom of the wheels and therefore can move from side to side a little bit."
Pros: Attractive, High Quality, Adjustable

Does it work on bikes with mud guards fitted?

Unlikely due to the way the front wheel is held. The mudguard may mean it doesn't fit, or if it does then the guard is going to be squashed anyway.
